Let me tell you about Joe Simon buying me lunch! I was truly saddened to hear of the passing of comic book legend Joe Simon yesterday! Despite the fact that he was 98 years old, I always thought he’s live forever. In the 1940’s Joe, along with his partner Jack Kirby created the Newsboy Legion, the Boy Commandoes, Fighting American and the most important character in my life… Captain America! When I met Mr. Simon about 8 years ago at a New York comic show, I was real nervous. At first my condition was due to the fact that he worked and was friends with ‘King Kirby’, then I became nervous because I was in the presence of true greatness. After all he was Captain America’s father. Sadly, not a lot in attendance were as awe struck as I was. I remember telling him how much Captain America meant to me and how my life would have been so much different if I never discovered him. What was so cool was that in the whole time I was babbling, he smiled and seemed so humbled by my words. We spoke a little bit about working with Jack, the current state of comics and his now legendary status which he completely underplayed. At that particular show there were a few ‘flavor of the month’ creators who were getting more attention than Mr. Simon was. At the time I thought ‘cool, more time for me’, now I think how sad. First, it’s sad that a whole generation of fans will never get the pleasure of spending time with an incredible person. Second is that another legend is gone. Like I said before, I thought he’d be with us forever. So when did he buy me lunch? At a show a year or two later, Secret Identity was just a few months old and I couldn’t wait to interview him for the show. Sadly when I got to him he told me he wasn’t feeling good and couldn’t do an interview. So as I began to walk away from him (with a look of sadness and disappointment) he stopped me and handed me a copy of ‘Captain America – The Classic Years’ because he felt he disappointed me. I told him I couldn’t just take it and gave him $20.00 for it. As he signed it ‘For Matt’, he took the cash and put it in the book without me knowing it. After I discovered it I went to give it back to him, but he already left the show due to illness. So I took the cash and bought lunch. Ergo, Joe Simon bought me lunch. Thank you Joe Simon, for everything… Could the new Ghost Rider movie erase the shame of the first one? Could this make up for one of the worst comic movies of all time? Could the creative team behind the Crank movies be the perfect duo to bring the Ghost Rider to the big screen? Could a PG-13 Ghost Rider not be terrible? Tune in this February to find out!
_There is something real cool going on for our friends in Indiana at Discount Comic Book Service! Wish we could be there... "Hi, I just wanted to let everyone know that DCBS is participating in the Comics Pro team up with Top Cow for their "end of Top Cow Universe" event. We will be hosting Tim Seeley in our store on Wednesday January 4th for a signing. Each attendee will receive 5% off their entire purchase in the store with a purchase of a Top Cow variant specifically made for the event. Tim Seeley has taken over the Witchblade title for Top Cow with his first issue releasing this month. Of course, Tim is the talented artist/writer/creator behind Hack Slash. He also was the artist on Kore, G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe vs. Transformers, and Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy. We will be stocking all of Tim's collected editions and will have a special sale on them in store. We also will have a very big store wide sale including 10 cent back issues, 75% off selected trade paperbacks and hardcovers, and 50% off select toys. Many of Top Cow's best creators and some of North America's finest comic retailers will be bringing in the new year and new universe in style. In addition to hosting a variety of signings, all ComicsPRO member retailers will also have access to two limited edition variant covers for ARTIFACTS #13 and WITCHBLADE #151 to commemorate the event! Thanks, Christina" It's been another great year for the Secret Identity All-Pros, our annual fantasy football league. This year saw some wild ups and downs, and now four teams vie for the championship. The Wheeling Ironmen went on a late season tear to finish in first place, followed by the Kentucky Moonshiners, who also wont heir last two to close out the regular season. Both the Springfield Bolts and the Killjokers held on for dear life and rode long losing streaks into the playoffs. In fact, the Springfield Bolts now hold the league record for most consecutive games lost and still making the playoffs (5). You can check out the final regular season standings below, and the playoff bracket as well. Good luck to the playoff teams, and the rest of the league still has games this week as well, albeit in the consolation bracket. Created by writer Dan Taylor and artist Gavin Spence, RENFIELD AND IGOR MEET DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE begins a “buddy story” similar to that of Laurel & Hardy and Abbott & Costello, told in the tradition of the great “road pictures” of Crosby & Hope. RENFIELD AND IGOR MEET DR. JEKYLL & MR. They are in danger of losing their home for not paying rent when Renfield is approached by Dr. Jekyll to “run errands” to acquire ingredients for a new formula. Igor is approached by Mr. Hyde to run the same errands. Not being bright enough to figure that Jekyll and Hyde are one in the same, Renfield and Igor plot to go ahead and do the job for both men in order to be paid twice—and, their adventure begins. RENFIELD AND IGOR MEET DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE will be a 32-page full color comic book written by Dan Taylor (Hero Happy Hour, Pirat Tales: Legend of the Cat O’ Nine Tails) with art by Glasgow-based illustrator Gavin Spence. The first issue of the series begins the journey of Renfield and Igor as they encounter iconic characters of the classic horror genre. Their misadventures continue with…
