The internet broke this week with news that Archie Comics was going to do a Kickstarter campaign to fund other new look projects that the company wants to do. If you didn't already know the world of Archie changes forever with the release of Archie # 1 in June. What many see is a great idea to ensure some of their favorite characters will see life in the new Archie, but top notch creators will be on these books.
Now what had set the comic world ablaze and they usually positive and loving interweb was the fact that many see what Archie is doing goes against the spirit of the independent driven Kickstarter. But Archie is, in my opinion, an independent company. My definition of an independent comic company is anyone other than DC or Marvel who have 'corporate' money behind them.
But at the same time.. if DC wanted to do a Kickstarter for a CAPTAIN CARROT or JONAH HEX comic I would support it!
I look at this as the way for Archie Comics to be able to bring me more books! I loved KEVEN KELLER but I don't think the market can support it, so if Kickstarter is the only way I will see him (written and drawn by Dan Parent and inked by J Bone), then I will support.
VERONICA MARS got a movie made thru Kickstarter campaign and i think Hollywood has more money than Archie Comics.
Kickstarter has become an incredible way for creators like Jimmy Palmiotti to fund some 'left of center' but amazing projects and even i was able to fund my MONKEY SEE... SEA MONKEY book.
So there is something for everyone...
