Earlier today I found out the horribly sad news about keyboard legend keith Emerson passing away at the age of 71. What is even sadder is that his death was apparently a suicide. Recently, Emerson had a nerve issue that impaired his ability to play. My introduction to Keith Emerson and his music came in 1982 when ASIA hit with their amazing debut album. With ASIA being a group comprised of well known musicians I soon began to discover the previous bands of each member. ASIA drummer Carl Palmer's previous band was the legendary EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER, a progressive trio that not only made some commercial music but would feature long concepts and album length songs with Emerson featured prominently. Following ELP's breakup, Emerson composed movie soundtracks including one of my favorite films, NIGHTHAWKS. In 1986 Emerson and Lake teamed up with drummer Cozy Powell and recorded a fairly successful album before disbanding a year later. In 1989 Emerson and palmer teamed up with Robert Berry and formed '3'. recording an amazing album, THREE TO THE POWER OF THREE. That album is personally my favorite work of Emerson. In 1992 Emerson, Lake and Palmer would finally reunite for BLACK MOON and IN THE HOT SEAT. Carl Palmer, who released the news said of his musical partner, "Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come." by Matman
A few years into Mego's successful Micronauts toy career, Marvel Comics was able to secure the license to create a comic book series based on the toy line. The first issue; written by Bill mantlo and drawn by Michael Golden gave us the incredible Microverse, a sub atomic universe existing close to ours containing many different creatures and planets, all embroiled in a war against the evil rule of baron Karza. How Marvel got the license is a great story! Christmas 1977, Mantlo's son Adam received a gift...Micronaut toys. Being so overcome with story ideas and possibilities, mantlo convinced then Editor In Chief Jim Shooter to get the license and from there... a legend was born. MICRONAUTS ran for two series; the first running for 59 issues and two annuals and ranks among one of my five favorite runs of comics ever! The series launched a flurry of toy related comics for Marvel including ROM, SHOGUN WARRIORS and G.I. JOE... but for me none were as memorable as the little heroes from inner space. A few months later the comic would return as MICRONAUTS - THE NEW VOYAGES and would last 20 issues before fading away. Since Marvel only owned the rights to the characters they created like 'Bug' or 'Arcturus Rann', we wouldn't see any of the other characters in any other comics. Sad because Acroyear, Baron Karza and Biotron were amazing characters... toys come to life. Only Bug would make any sort of return or impact, fighting alongside the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. For one of the best comic stories ever, the first twelve issues of the original series is simply the best! Press Release
Today, BOOM! Box, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, and DC Comics announced a Lumberjanes Gotham Academy crossover limited series, debuting in June. The announcement was made on The Village Voice. The six-issue series will be written by Chynna Clugston-Flores (Blue Monday) and illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell (Lumberjanes). It was announced by family, that Boston based artist Paul Ryan had passed away at the age of 66. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Paul's comic book credits included a long run on FANTASTIC FOUR, time on IRON MAN and THE FLASH. Paul also drew AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL # 21 which featured the wedding of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. He also worked for King Feature Syndicate on the comic strip THE PHANTOM. Paul was an amazingly talented artist and an incredibly kind soul who I got to know over the years. My favorite story was hanging out with him t UNITED FAN CON in Springfield, MA about ten years ago. For some reason the show promoters were NOT treating the comic book people very well and Paul was psyched to be sitting next to Grace Park from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. For some reason the promoters put up a wall between Paul and Grace, upsetting Paul and myself. As the day went on, Grace kept looking over the divide to see what Paul was working on. He joked with her saying "she is going to get in trouble talking to the lowly comic artists." Grace, upset by the wall between them, moved the partition and hung out with paul the rest of the day. Paul drew her an incredible Supergirl and she gave Paul and me each an autographed photo.

In 1979 Marvel Comics began publishing a comic series based on a toyline that a few years prior made its debut in the United States, The Micronauts. Although I never was 'full on' into the toys (because my toy budget was allocated to STAR WARS toys) I was captivated by the toy line, the figures and the packaging. For example, TIME TRAVELER, who was the cheapest and most basic of the figures came in the 1976 release came in several different clear colors including clear, blue, orange and yellow. The packaging for the toys was a longer card back with a photo of the toy (whatever figure it was) with some cool light effect. The figures were articulated sadly to the point of being too fragile for rough play and the vehicles and most figures were interchangeable to the point of losing pieces. When I had extra money I would purchase MICRONAUTS to augment my STAR WARS adventures. SPACE GLIDER, ACROYEAR, REPTO and even the tank-like TERRAPANT vehicle would end up fighting with or against Luke Skywalker and the gang. MICRONAUTS would produce 5 waves of colorful and super cool toys from 1976 to 1980 until the line, and sadly MEGO would file bankruptcy in 1982, leaving the toyline in limbo for many years. But before the toys would disappear from store shelves, Marvel would launch one of my favorite comic series of all time! "THEY CAME FROM INNER SPACE" was the tag line and what a ride they would bring the reader on.... |
