Doc freaking Brown. Man, I cannot wait for this game.
It's Monday, and the only thing better than diving into a full week of work is doing it to the sweet wounds of two old dudes talking about comic books. Here's your rundown:
Download Location of the Week: Chicago, IL Feedback Summer Reading Project: Secret Wars #1 Secret Wars #2 Convergence #5 Convergence: #6 Convergence: Nightwing and Oracle #2 Convergence: Action Comics #1 You can listen to the episode right here in the player above, or grab us on iTunes, Stitcher or your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening! A few weeks ago I wrote about a new monthly subscription service called Four Color Grails. Unlike a lot of other "loot box" type services, this one was aimed squarely at comic collectors, delivering four exclusive variant issues (grails) per month to their subscribers. This weekend I got a chance to check out the April box from Four Color Grails, and I came away very impressed. The outer packaging is a white box with the FCG logo on the side, which protects the very nice slip-covered black box on the inside. The inside box that houses the comics opens book-style, and has a magnetic strip to hold it closed. It's very slick and well-presented. But all that great packaging doesn't mean anything if the covers aren't worth it. Luckily, that wasn't a problem, as the covers themselves were great. Marvel's Secret Wars, Dark Horse's Archie vs. Predator, Valiant's Bloodshot Reborn and Oni's Rick and Morty. This month's box hit to all fields with publishers big and small, and offered a little something for all types of comic fans. What's even cooler is that the comics are marked exclusive to FCG right on the cover. Even better, the backs featured the FCG logo and space for a sketch, if you were so inclined. All in all, I'm really impressed with what Four Color Grails is doing with their subscription box. They offer 1-month ($29.99) and 3-month ($26.95/mo) plans, and you can purchase previous boxes for $44.95 (while they last, I assume). If you're into variant covers, FCG seems like a great way to get some exclusives for your collection.

Indy Publisher to Release Super Hero Comic for Young Girls in October Boston comic creators “HB Comics” have announced “Team Synergy,” a comic about a super-team of young girls, and aimed at getting young female readers interested in super heroes. According to the creators, the book was very much inspired by their own daughters and nieces. “As a father of two young girls, I could not be happier to finally be announcing this book.” said Chris Hebert, the art director/colorist for the series, in a message on Facebook. “Trying to find super-hero stuff to get my daughter into...there just wasn't anything out there with her in mind.” The announcement, coming from the HB Comics' Facebook, offered the following insight to the new book: "Young, Super-powered. Family. Five teenage cousins, under the guidance of their great great grandmother, learn how to be superheroes, and about where real strength comes from. For every young girl who never had a super hero of their own to look up to, HBComics proudly announces a new ongoing title. Written by Alan Hebert (Writer of Lazerman) and with art by Scott Shiver (Blokes' Tomb of Terror) and colors by Chris Hebert, Team Synergy will premiere in October.” HB Comics has promised the team includes young women from a variety of backgrounds. Promotional materials released include bios for several of the team's members, including a character named Glitterbug, who struggles with self confidence and weight issues. Included in the bio is a quote: “Heroes come in all sizes, and shapes.” About HB Comics™: HB Comics™ is an independent comic book publisher, founded by two brothers from Boston. More information on the company, or the titles being produced, can be found at www.hbcomics.com, or www.facebook.com/hbcomics. If there was any doubt that we have an embarrassment of TV superhero riches right now, this trailer destroys that doubt. Behold--the first look at the CW's new Arrow/Flash spinoff, Legends of Tomorrow.
DC has been doing an amazing job with their television universe, and that shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Here's hoping the new Supergirl show (even though it's on CBS) will in some way connect with what's happening over on the CW. But seriously, this trailer is amazing. Rip Hunter?! Time travel?! Hawkgirl?! Are you kidding me?!!!!!!! by Matman
The internet broke this week with news that Archie Comics was going to do a Kickstarter campaign to fund other new look projects that the company wants to do. If you didn't already know the world of Archie changes forever with the release of Archie # 1 in June. What many see is a great idea to ensure some of their favorite characters will see life in the new Archie, but top notch creators will be on these books. Now what had set the comic world ablaze and they usually positive and loving interweb was the fact that many see what Archie is doing goes against the spirit of the independent driven Kickstarter. But Archie is, in my opinion, an independent company. My definition of an independent comic company is anyone other than DC or Marvel who have 'corporate' money behind them. But at the same time.. if DC wanted to do a Kickstarter for a CAPTAIN CARROT or JONAH HEX comic I would support it! I look at this as the way for Archie Comics to be able to bring me more books! I loved KEVEN KELLER but I don't think the market can support it, so if Kickstarter is the only way I will see him (written and drawn by Dan Parent and inked by J Bone), then I will support. VERONICA MARS got a movie made thru Kickstarter campaign and i think Hollywood has more money than Archie Comics. Kickstarter has become an incredible way for creators like Jimmy Palmiotti to fund some 'left of center' but amazing projects and even i was able to fund my MONKEY SEE... SEA MONKEY book. So there is something for everyone... Press Release Th3rd World Studios is following our hit, NY Times Bestselling series The Stuff of Legend and critically acclaimed fantasy graphic novel Finding Gossamyr with a new fun filled adventure title, Thanatos Diver, sure to please fans of any age. The series, which was released internationally on this year's Free Comic Book Day, follows a young girl named Samantha on an underwater treasure hunting adventure that leads her to a strange and exciting uncharted world. With only a week under its belt, this exciting new story is already drawing high praise from retailers and news outlets alike. The series is created by Archaia alumni and best pals Nick Tapalansky and Alex Eckman-Lawn (Awakening, Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Vol. 2). Their mutual love of old school video games and a healthy dose of classic anime and manga was a huge inspiration for the series. Thanatos Diver will be serialized for FREE every Tuesday and Thursday at www.thanatosdiver.com. For fans who can't wait to read ahead, completed chapters can also be purchased digitally (DRM-FREE) before wrapping up on the website via ComiXology or the Th3rd World Studios website. Completed chapters will eventually be collected and released in incredibly handsome and irresistible print books you can use to impress your friends. "It isn't much of a surprise that Nick and I share a lot of the same nerdy passions, or that we're still twelve at heart, so you can see loves of that era in the DNA of this book. It's like The Legend of Zelda and Bone got together and Studio Ghibli came to film the show, you know?", said artist Alex Eckman-Lawn.
"Samantha is bored out of her skull. She lives on an island, her entire world is covered in ocean, and she's explored pretty much every crusty corner of the sunken city that surrounds her home. She's just about accepted a tedious, excitement-free life when a contest with a rival diver sends her deep into the sunken city's forbidden zone where she discovers a pathway to a world more exciting and dangerous than anything she's ever imagined--a world full of uncharted lands, mysterious creatures, and the mythical Thanatos Diver who, depending on the teller, is rumored to either save both worlds or destroy them..." The series, which debuted to fantastic reviews on Free Comic Book Day, already has the first 13 page preloaded, with updates to begin today! Completed chapters will eventually be released in incredibly handsome and irresistible print books you can use to impress your friends. Th3rd World Studios co-publisher Jon Conkling: "When we received the pitch for Thanatos Diver we were pretty blown away by the world that Nick and Alex had pitched to us. I know that it sounds like a broken record, but I couldn't help but remember the feeling I had when I first started playing Wind Waker. " You can start reading the series right now for free at www.thanatosdiver.com. by Matman
So here we are... midway thru DC's Convergence and for me (and many of my comic reading friends) has been better than 50% as far as the main title and the tie-in issues. For me the past couple weeks have seen better issues (Justice Society, Freedom Fighters) and some cool fights including the Warlord and his arch enemy, Diemos. Convergence # 5 - Joining on the visuals is the amazing Andy Kubert (pencils) and Sandra Hope (inker) and we lose someone in the battle. The last few pages are KILLER!!! Action Comics - Welcome back to the Golden Age of comics with Superman of Earth Two, his wife Lois and ..... HEX! Yup, that's what I said! Batgirl - Forced into a battle she can't win against Gorilla Grodd, Casandra is helped by an unlikely ally. Batman and The Outsiders - It is so cool to see the classic 1980's team back together, but when the dome comes down, you wanna be as far from Metamorpho as you possibly can. Harley Quinn - Blah, blah, blah until she has to fight Captain Carrot and some of the Amazing Zoo crew! Nightwing / Oracle - Following an amazing fight with Hawkman and Hawkgirl... a happy ending! Speed Force - How cool to see Wally west Flash getting help from the Zoo Crew's Fastback! You don't have to buy every issue, just the ones you want and the ones you asked your store to order!
