Review--Swamp Thing #34

9/20/2014

by Brian LeTendre

This issue reminded me of how much I’ll miss Charles Soule’s run on Swamp Thing when he leaves for Marvel. He has written the New 52 version of Swamp Thing almost as long as Scott Snyder did (he took over with issue #19), and had to follow the amazing "Rotworld" storyline. He’s done so admirably, from the "Seeder" storyline that almost saw him lose the avatar mantle, to the most recent storyline involving the former avatars of the Green and how they’ve adjusted to being back on earth.

This issue brings that arc to a close, and it covers a lot of ground in doing so. Several characters’ fates are decided, and the supporting cast of the book is decidedly smaller by the end. Artist Javier Pina gets to flex his muscles here, as we jump from heartbreaking drama, to action, to outright horror, all of which he handles well.

Soule has really made some sweeping changes to the character since taking over, none bigger than getting rid of the Parliament of the Green. He’s taken risks with the character, and so far they’ve all paid off. The next arc begins with a tie-in to “Future’s End,” and should be the final story arc of his run, which will have Swamp Thing meeting members of the Machine Kingdom. I’m pretty sure Soule will be leaving Swamp Thing on a strong note, which is pretty darn exciting given how great his run has been so far.

Now we can add to this Vermont Comic Con! Happening October 25 - 26th (in the beautiful city of Burlington) is a show that it looks like Secret Identity may be making it up too!

Review--New Warriors #8 (Marvel)

9/17/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

I feel like New Warriors is a book without a real identity. I was a big fan of Yost’s Scarlet Spider series, and I was psyched to see Kaine and Aracely coming along to this new book as well. My knowledge of the New Warriors starts and ends with their involvement in the Civil War event, so I was also interested in learning more about them as well.

But so far, I feel like this book is building in a bunch of different directions, and none of them are paying off. We’re eight issues in, and I’m still not sure what the High Evolutionary was up to. Now we’ve got some evil new Inhumans filtering out “non-worthy” new Inhumans. Not to mention, Kaine and Aracely really have nothing to do with anything that’s happened in this book so far.

If Yost is building toward something, I’m not seeing what it is. On an issue-to-issue basis, New Warriors has been a fun popcorn book, full of action and witty banter. And I absolutely love the new Sun Girl, who I think could be a candidate for her own book. But with all of these characters thrown together under the banner of New Warriors, this group just doesn’t have an identity yet.

Sadly, it’s already been announced that New Warriors will end with issue #12 in November. That’s probably not enough time for Yost to right the ship, but if he and artist Marcus To can pull this team together by then, I think the series will be remembered fondly. As it stands right now, it’s more of a failed experiment, and I think the cancellation is evidence of that.

ASIA 2014...The Best So Far

9/13/2014

Picture

by Matman

Since their debut in 1982, ASIA has always been one of my all time favorite bands. Their combination of well crafted songs and virtuoso playing really spoke to me and still does. Currently supporting their latest disc GRAVITAS, the new look ASIA hit the stage at the Bull Run in Shirley, MA for a set that was heavy on memories, fun and just plain heavy!

Joining original members John Wetton (bass/vocals), Geoff Downes (
keyboards) and Carl Palmer (drums) is brilliant new guitarist Sam Coulson whose presence was felt from the show opening 'Soul Survivor' all the way to the final riffs of 'Heat of the Moment'!

ASIA 2014 is a much heavier band live and it gives a new life to classics like 'Go', 'Time Again', 'Don't Cry' and 'Days Like These'.
Not just living in the past, ASIA covered 'Gravitas', 'Valkyrie' (both from their latest album) and 'An Extraordinary Life' and proved they are not a nostalgia act. These are four gifted musicians who can still pack a serious punch onstage!

But it wasn't all about the heavy... during the set the band took out stools and went a little acoustic featuring an amazing version of 'Voice of America' and a moving take on 'The Smile Has Left Your Eyes'; so moving my wife began to cry!

As pitch perfect as John Wetton's vocals were or the textures that the keyboards of Geoff Downes created, it was Carl Palmer on drums that really brought the house down. His ever entertaining solo proved why he is one of rock's greatest drummers.

If you have never seen ASIA live, check them out on this tour! Music always needs to be heard live and no one does it better than ASIA
.
