Collecting To The Core!

10/20/2011

Picture
One of the cool tables we ran into at New York Comic Con was Collection Core! Started by a cool couple (who also happen to be New England Patriots fans), the idea is collectors buying and selling from other collectors. Unlike other auction sites that can confuse and lose you, Collection Core makes it easy!

“How many collectible items are out there that we either haven't seen in decades or have been in someone's personal collection for so long we forgot that they even exist? As collectors do we sell our most prized possessions or do we keep them locked away and protected? If we are inclined to sell them, it is a good bet that they have been listed on sites that provide services such as online auctions or classified listings. However, if these pieces are held in high regard by their respective owners the chances are slim that they have been listed on websites that sell such treasures.

This is where the Collection Core service comes in. Do you have a collectible that holds a special place in your heart and that you would never think to sell? Has it been locked away in your collection for so long that others have not been able to enjoy it as well? If the answer is "yes" to any of these questions then it is time to show the world what you are so proud of.

Collection Core is a constantly improving application that is built by our contributing members whom we call collectors. Collectors age ranges vary greatly based on the fact that there is so much out there to collect. From coins to toys to baseball cards and even furniture collectors now have a space where they can share their items with other people that have similar interests. The content on the site is provided for collectors by collectors. Surveys are taken to find out what the most recent fad is and what members are currently doing related to their collecting passion.”

Matman's Favorite NYCC Moment...Karma NOT Included!

10/17/2011

As I was talking with ‘Lady Action’ herself Niki Rubin, someone was getting some cool books signed by her at the Captain Action booth. As he fumbled to collect them, I handed him a bag to put his treasures in. Niki thought that was so sweet and kind and said “Matt. You’re a sweet person. Good Karma is coming your way!”

So a few minutes later me, Brian, Vince Ferrante (Witch Hunter creator) and his friend all jumped into an off duty cab. We had to grab this one because it would fit all of us. His mission was to get us to Grand Central Station in less than 10 minutes so we could catch our train.

For the next five minutes we weaved in and out of traffic like Speed Racer, raced at speeds that the Flash tops out at and dodged pedestrians like they were... well we didn’t quite dodge them. In fact we almost hit a couple. We got so close to one she was a few inches away from the cab window as I talked to Vince. I heard her scream and could count her fillings we were that close.

It was awesome!!!!

But the kicker was when we all piled out of the cab I got out slow since it was a high vehicle and slippery with rain. As I slid out I saw something fall out of my pocket and fall directly into the sewer. At first, sheer terror ran through me!!! I thought I just dropped my recorder into the toilet! 3 days and about 11 interviews I thought were gone forever!!! Then I realized it was just my phone!

Hey Niki…where was the Karma?

Review--Walking Dead S2E1: What Lies Ahead

10/17/2011

Picture
The Walking Dead returned to television last night, and despite the behind-the-scenes drama that has gone this past year, the show felt consistent with last season in every way. Of course, that’s not always a good thing.

Warning--Spoilers Ahead!

Season two of The Walking Dead picks up right where last season left off and has the survivors leaving the CDC and heading toward Fort Worth. In the first act of the 90-minute premiere, the big scene involves the group stopping on a stretch of highway to repair the Winnebago, only to encounter a herd of zombies shambling through. There are some really tense moments here, as the group is separated from one another, and it culminates when 12-year old Sophia gets discovered by the zombies and runs off into the woods. Rick heads in after her, but as he leads the zombies away from her, he loses Sophia in the forest, setting the stage for the rest of the episode. It’s a great first 30 minutes of television. Sadly, it’s also the remaining 60 minutes are pretty much downhill from there.

The search for Sophia is the backdrop for the rest of the episode, which is spent mostly catching up with each survivor and their current state of mind. The events at the CDC have changed the dynamics of the group. and as this season begins, things are starting to fall apart already.

It’s no secret that The Walking Dead is not primarily about zombies. Like the comic, it focuses on the people that are left, how they treat each other, and how they survive. Unfortunately for the TV show, that has often translated into really slow stretches that are just long conversations between characters with nothing much else going on.  Such is the case with this episode, which would have played a lot better had it been cut to an hour. At 90 minutes, it feels bloated and slow. After the first act, things pretty much grind to a halt until the last 30 seconds of the episode, which ratchets things up for next week.

All in all, I was a little disappointed by the season premiere. There were some great moments, but the pacing is uneven and it’s 30 minutes too long.

NYCC 2011--Palmiotti And Conner Team With Tieri For 'Captain Brooklyn'

10/16/2011

Picture
Word came out of NYCC this week that Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Connor and Frank Tieri will be collaborating on a new miniseries for Image comics in 2012. The new series will be called Captain Brooklyn, and will feature a down in his luck Brooklynite named Vinnie, whose life only gets more complicated when he getrs superpowers. According to Amanda Connor, the character is inspired by Tieri himself. It also sounds like the series will be in the same vein as The Pro, which was a completely bonkers and hilarious book.

USA Today put up a great story about the new title, which should be coming in May. You can read that story here.

NYCC 2011--1821 Comics, Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment Launch 'Stan Lee's Kids Universe'

Press Release

Paris Kasidokostas Latsis and Terry Dougas, founders of the graphic novel and comic book company 1821 Comics (www.1821comics.com),  Comic legend Stan Lee, Founder, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of POW! Entertainment and his producing partner, President and COO of POW! Entertainment Gill Champion announced today that they are teaming up to launch a new family-friendly multi-platform imprint called STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE. With the announcement, STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE will release a series of new books, characters, and interactive games---all created for children.

The announcements were made during a special presentation at New York Comic Con where Dougas and Lee unveiled a sneak peak at the company’s slate of first five books. Lee and Dougas showcased a number of giant posters and images from the new imprint for fans and media. Lee and Dougas also revealed plans for STAN LEE SAVES THE WORLD a new interactive game that they are co-producing with Cosmic Ray Gun Creative Design Studio for the iPad/iPhone platforms. This marks the first in a series of games that they will be releasing under the STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE banner. STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE will release its first two books in spring 2012, both projects are from acclaimed illustrator, writer, and comic creator Dani Jones, and are titled MONSTERS VS. KITTENS and ONCE UPON A TIME.

Dani Jones’ MONSTERS VS. KITTENS tells the story of a giant monster and a tiny kitten who are best friends. Her second book ONCE UPON A TIME tells the tale of a little pig who wants to tell a story but keeps getting interrupted by a cast of eclectic animals.

During the presentation Lee and Dougas also showcased characters from three additional books that STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE is currently developing in association with Viper Comics and their founder Jessie Garza:
  • “The Fuzz Posse,” a group of mischievous police dogs featuring an evil porcupine villain
  • An untitled book based on an assorted animal rock band with a cool cast that includes a rooster, a parrot, a hippo, a rabbit, a pig and a monkey
  • “Reggie The Veggie Crocodile,” a crocodile who loves vegetables and encourages kids to eat a well balanced diet
Commented Stan Lee:  “Our main purpose is we feel that there aren't enough comic books or books for kids that really hit the target, that gives them excitement and humor together and are filled with surprises. We have a whole new group of new characters that the kids can call their own, just as the teenagers called Spider-Man their own so many years ago."

Paris Kasidokostas Latsis of 1821 Comics commented: “Our goal at 1821 Comics since we launched the company has always been to create high quality books for all audiences and it’s always been a dream to create our very own kids’ brand, we couldn’t be happier to be making this a reality with Stan Lee. With today’s digital distribution opportunities, our imprint is in a prime position for tremendous growth.”

Added Terry Dougas of 1821 Comics: “It’s a pleasure and an honor to be launching this new imprint with Stan Lee today at New York Comic Con. After years of working together, Stan, Paris and I identified a place in the market for a new fun family brand for children and we are looking forward to filling this void with STAN LEE’S KIDS UNIVERSE. This imprint will be releasing a slate of books, games and characters.”

Last Year’s party drew in a cross-spectrum of professionals in the industry, and a crowd of over 300 patrons. Blaggards, which is just six blocks East of the Javits Convention
