Review--New Warriors #8 (Marvel)

9/17/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

I feel like New Warriors is a book without a real identity. I was a big fan of Yost’s Scarlet Spider series, and I was psyched to see Kaine and Aracely coming along to this new book as well. My knowledge of the New Warriors starts and ends with their involvement in the Civil War event, so I was also interested in learning more about them as well.

But so far, I feel like this book is building in a bunch of different directions, and none of them are paying off. We’re eight issues in, and I’m still not sure what the High Evolutionary was up to. Now we’ve got some evil new Inhumans filtering out “non-worthy” new Inhumans. Not to mention, Kaine and Aracely really have nothing to do with anything that’s happened in this book so far.

If Yost is building toward something, I’m not seeing what it is. On an issue-to-issue basis, New Warriors has been a fun popcorn book, full of action and witty banter. And I absolutely love the new Sun Girl, who I think could be a candidate for her own book. But with all of these characters thrown together under the banner of New Warriors, this group just doesn’t have an identity yet.

Sadly, it’s already been announced that New Warriors will end with issue #12 in November. That’s probably not enough time for Yost to right the ship, but if he and artist Marcus To can pull this team together by then, I think the series will be remembered fondly. As it stands right now, it’s more of a failed experiment, and I think the cancellation is evidence of that.

Captain Canuck Cartoon? Whaaaaat?

9/10/2014

Picture
by Matman

My association with Captain Canuck began in 1979 when I picked up a copy of CAPTAIN CANUCK # 9 at my local drug store in Broad Brook, CT. How and why it ended up there i'll never know but it started a
life long love of the hero from
North of the boarder!

Older listeners to the show will remember my interview I did with Captain Canuck creator Richard Comely, which was not only an early one for me... but one of my favorites.

Well those who attended the Captain Canuck Super Panel at Fan Expo in Toronto got some amazing news including a possible animated series!

Featuring Richard Comely, pr
esident of Captain Canuck Inc. Fadi Hakim, creative director Paul Gardner, illustrator Kalman Andrasofszky, Silver Snail owner George Zotti, Comic Book Daily author Walter Durajlija and LOST GIRL star Paul Amosteam. The group went into detail about the place in the comic book world, costume design and plans they had in store for the good Captain.

“We wanted to put Captain Canuck in as real of a world we could without distilling it too much,” said Gardner in Toronto. “We wanted to establish who this character was going to be – he’s continuing to evolve with the comic and story, but really it was just to have fun with the character.”

For the animated web series, Gardner said he wanted high adventure while having a few laughs along the way. The episodes were shown to the fans who were unanimous in its praise and applause!

The other 'killer' news is that
a new series was announced at the panel to great approval from the audience. The series will contain the origins of Captain Canuck, and will take place in areas of interest in Canada. The plan is for a six issue series and if it does well there is another arc in the works.

Stalking a Sereal Killer In Nailbiter

9/5/2014

Picture
Press Release

From the outside, Buckaroo,
Oregon seems like a typical small
town, but there’s something
that makes it extraordinary.
The setting of NAILBITER by
Joshua Williamson (GHOSTED) and
Mike Henderson (MASKS
AND MOBSTERS), a new graphic
novel coming in October from
Image Comics is the hometown
of sixteen of the world’s most heinous serial killers. Random chance? FBI profiler Eliot Carroll didn’t think so, and his investigations led him deep into Buckaroo’s secrets… where he disappeared without a trace.

Now, Carroll’s best friend, army intelligence officer Nicholas Finch, has come to Buckaroo in search of him. The most obvious suspect is Edward “The Nailbiter” Warren — a psychopath acquitted of forty-five counts of first degree murder. Warren may be the key to finding Carroll — as well as the latest killer who has begun to menace Buckaroo.

“I’ve always wondered ‘why, and how?’ What happens in a person’s life that turns them into that kind of monster?” said writer Williamson of his interest in serial killers in an interview at Multiversity Comics. “Is it an event or are they born that way? It’s part of what we explore in the overall Nailbiter story.”

“[Nailbiter] really wended its way in directions we hadn’t predicted once sketches and designs started being kicked back and forth,” said artist Henderson of the creative process. “We both saw a twisting mystery though, rooted under the town of Buckaroo and affecting everyone in it in different (often horrible) ways.”

A mystery with the psychological horror of Hannibal and the surreal small-town claustrophobia of Twin Peaks, NAILBITER VOLUME 1: THERE WILL BE BLOOD will be in comic book stores on October 1 and in bookstores on October 14. It is specially priced at only $9.99 and available for pre-order now.

MO STACHE Is Back!

9/4/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

The final chapter of the amazing saga that is Mo Stache begins today! Entitled "Hair on Earth,” the chapter opens with Jill fighting to keep her humanity  a citywide alien invasion.

I don’t want to spoil any more in case you haven’t had a chance to catch up. And for those of you that have no idea what I’m talking about, Mo Stache is the story of Dave Reynolds, a regular guy who wakes up one morning with an alien mustache living on his face.

Picture
His girlfriend Jill and his boss AJ both get sucked into the craziness that becomes Dave’s life. And when I say craziness, I mean things like mustachioed robots and ordinary people turning into Sasquatch-like, mind controlled monsters.
Picture
If any of that sounds interesting to you, that you’ll be happy to know that you can read every single page of Mo Stache absolutely free over on www.mostachecomic.com (Click HERE if you want to go to the first page and not have anything spoiled). We put up a new page every other Wednesday, and we’ve now started an Instagram account (instagram.com/mo_stache_), where artist John Cordis will be posting old sketches, works in progress, and other cool stuff.

Stay tuned!

Now go catch up on Mo!

Futures End...My End?

9/3/2014

Picture
by Matman

Today began the latest DC event... FUTURES END! Today... I bought no DC comics. Shocked? Not as shocked as I am. This must be a first... not one DC book.

Last May, DC began it's weekly FUTURES END series. A long
term weekly comic that would jump ahead five years into the
DC Universe with a huge monthly event in September. Well to be honest; nine issues into the series I was not only bored and confused, but I realized I was buying books I didn't even enjoy.
So I walked away fro FUTURES END with no regret. I wasn't worried that people were gonna be talking about it and I would feel like I was missing something.

But I wasn't missing anything!

My biggest problem with Futures END is that it is moving into a possible future of world (the New 52) that I still haven't quite surrendered too. It seems that as time goes on in the New 52 I am becoming less enamored with it.
Sure there are great books like the Batman family, the FLASH, SUPERMAN (since Johns and Romita showed up) and I don't feel like investing time and money into its possible future. I kinda feel like DC needs to stabilize the line before they jump into an event and not just an event... a financial investment!

So this week as I looked at the shelves of my shop I thought, "wow do these covers look amazing!" Then I saw the price, flipped thru the issues and just said no!

Please don't think I'm asking you to boycott FUTURES END because I'm not. We have
a lot of friends working on these titles
as well as a lot of store owners who don't want to be stuck with a pile of lenticular 3-D covers.

Instead of just buying what I didn't want to I took a chance on some other stuff, like some Wolverine comics that take place in World War One! Still spent the same money and bought my usual ten books every Wednesday, it was just a different ten!

Inkwell Awards Announces 8th Season Convention Tour

(New Bedford, MA/USA-September 02, 2014): The non-profit Inkwell Awards has scheduled their upcoming convention appearances for the first half of their eighth season tour to support the group's mission of promoting, educating and recognizing the art form of inking and ink artists in the comic book industry.

The first stop the Granite State Comicon in Manchester, NH this September 13-14. The advocacy is making its first appearance there since 2010, with Inkwell founder/director Bob Almond and Anna White as their spokesmodel Ms. Inkwell. Along with assorted merchandise available at their booth, they will hold raffles for original art featuring Batman, Poison Ivy and Thor by industry and fan favorites.

Next is the Rhode Island Comic Con in Providence on November 1-2. Joining Almond and Ms. Inkwell will be several committee members and special Inkwell ambassadors J. David Spurlock and the legendary Joe Sinnott, the namesake of the charity's Hall of Fame Award and its annual Inking Challenge event and book collection.

"The fans love our friend Joe as do we. Since he doesn't do many shows these days, it's a huge celebration when we reunite. The fans enjoy it as much as he does," said Almond. “Meeting a living legend is a rare treat.”

Later show stops will take place towards the end of the season in May and June of 2015 with the Hartford and Heroes Cons, to be announced later.
