A bit of bittersweet news came down yesterday, as Marvel announced that Spider-Man 2099 would be ending, and would be replaced in May by a new series, Secret Wars 2099.
It's a real bummer that Spider-Man 2099 won't even last a year as a new series, especially since it was selling pretty well. But I guess I was a bit naive in thinking that the tile would come out unscathed from both Spider-Verse and Secret Wars.
But let's look at the bright side here. We now know that the 2099 universe is part of Secret Wars, which is awesome. Marvel also announced that Peter David and Will Sliney are the team on the book, which makes me very happy. Peter David now has more toys to play with in the 2099 sandbox, and that's a great thing.
Even though this series looks to be focused on a group of Avengers that works for Alchemax, I would be shocked if we don't get a healthy dose of Spidey 2099, as well as some of the other great characters in that universe.
Now the big question is whether or not the 2099 universe will survive Secret Wars and become part of the new continuity, and if the Secret Wars 2099 series will morph into a new ongoing moving forward. I have my fingers crossed for both of those things, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Maybe a new 2099: World of Tomorrow series?
