(deep movie voice) In a time when most comic fans are tired and bored with manufactured events comes last January's 'Mars Attacks...' event from IDW!
Following their lackluster 'Infestation' and the much better 'Star Trek / Doctor Who' crossover, 'Mars Attacks IDW' was not only creative, but every one of the books stood out on its own and was a fun little showcase for the series that was spotlighted.
In the first week, 'Mars Attacks Popeye' told a humorous tale in the Popeye style, as if the Martians invaded a Popeye comic. Written by Martin Powell and lovingly drawn by Terry Beatty, it was the perfect way to start the fun.
In 'Mars Attacks KISS (Chris Ryall words and Alan Robinson pictures), the cool twist was the invading aliens became the KISS characters. Nothing like seeing Spaceman as a well, a spaceman!
Our friend, writer Eric Burnham (with artist Jose Holder) brought fans to the world of the 'Real Ghostbusters' and gives readers a taste of what may to be to come in the new Ghostbusters series.
'Mars Attacks Transformers' showcases one of IDW's most beloved properties that are more than meet the eye. Creators Shane McCarthy and Matt Frank do a fantastic job making you feel this isn't a forced concept..
The final issue, 'Mars Attacks Zombies VS. Robots' is nothing short of stunning. Written by Mr. Ryall and featuring stylized and very moody art by Andy Kuhn, this one is just a big punch up, chew up and shoot up!
Each issue featured a regular covers by Ray Dillon as well as 2 variant covers featuring some of comics favorite characters like Judge Dredd and Opus and showcased some of comics greatest artist including Dave Sim, John Byrne and Mike and Laura Allred.
What makes this series so good is that the premise of Mars Attacks is just that...what if Martians invaded these books as something else was happening? The books are drawn and written in the style of the comic without the concept being forced, especially noticed in the 'Popeye' and 'Zombies VS. Robots'.
If you missed this one, be ready when IDW collects the series into one book. One can only hope there will be a Mars Attacks... Pat Two featuring the rest of the IDW stable; Doctor Who, Judge Dredd, Ninja Turtles, Star Trek and get ready for it... 'Mars Attacks My Little Pony.'
