When IDW announced they were bringing back ROM and the MICRONAUTS my first thought was excitement, especially for the 'nauts! My second thought was 'can IDW live up to my expectations of the Marvel MICRONAUTS being one of my favorite comic books, EVER?
So here we are and i've just finished the first issue and my thought as I close the cover? HOLY COW!!!
Writer Cullen Bunn (it was mentioned at the end of the book) was a huge Micronauts fan when he was younger and it shows in the story he put together. Capturing the rag tag team concept of the original, we meet a group who find themselves in a galaxy wide crisis. Something is destroying planets and no one knows who or what is responsible.
I'm not familiar with artist David Baldeon's work up to this point, but he captures perfectly the look, the style and the feel of the original series, done by Michael Golden.
David... you had me by page three!
The rest of the creative team; inkers Fico Ossio, Max Dunbar and Jack Lawrence do a brilliant job adding the depth to the art as well as the coloring team; David Garcia Cruz, Joana Lafuente, Thomas Deer and John-Paul Bove who make this book pop and jump right off the pages.
So in a nutshell... this is the MICRONAUTS book I was hoping for. It's been a long time since I was this excited about a comic book, so thank you IDW.
20% nostalgia, 80% top-line comic read equals a zillion % fun!
