One of the most popular and influential artist of all time passed away last week at the age of 91. Jack Davis known for his trendsetting cartoons in MAD magazine and EC Comics died following complicatiosn due to a stroke.
Davis served in the Navy during World War II and following the war he attended the University of Georgia (on the G.I. Bill) and then, in 1950 began his cartooning career. Following many rejections he began working at EC Comics on such titles as TALES FROM THE CRYPT, TWO FISTED TALES and THE HAUNT OF FEAR.
In 1952 Davis began working at the new;y founded MAD, where is style began to evolve, finding its way into advertising and magazines like TV GUIDE and TIME.
