Little Big Planet Vita Could Mean Big Things For Sony's Little Handheld

9/26/2012

Little Big Planet Vita officially launched in the US yesterday (some retailers have been selling it early), and the game’s release could eba big deal for Sony’s struggling handheld.

As a well-known Sony franchise, Little Big Planet has the potential to be the best-selling game on the Vita to date. Early reviews on the game indicate that it’s the best version of Little Big Planet to date, which is saying a lot since the average Metacritic score of the previous three games is 91 out of 100.

I’m relatively confident that the gameplay of LBP VIta is going to be in line with the previous games of the series. What I think makes this a very important game for the Vita is the creation tools built into the game, and how they take advantage of the Vita’s strengths. Both the touchscreen and the camera of the Vita can be used to help create levels, and with the amount of content that Little big planet has to offer for level creation, the possibilities are quite literally endless.

Recently, I wrote about how I thought Sound Shapes was the first killer app for the Vita, and it’s approach to user created content was one of the primary reasons. I think Little Big Planet Vita can be an even bigger game for the Vita, and I hope the handheld will finally start to get some traction going into this holiday season.

I look forward to spending some time with the game, and I’ll post some thoughts about it then.
