Matman Picks His 5 Favorite 'Bad Girl' Series

4/10/2012

Remember all those ‘bad girl’ comics of the early 1990’s? Sadly, that term really hurt some good books. Many of these books fell into the time trap of the time period; big art, eye popping multiple covers and not a lot of substance!

BUT, there were a few books that not only looked awesome, but had some incredibly captivating stories.

Danger Girl – Not just my favorite ‘gal’ comic, but one of favorites of all time. J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell blended pretty girls, a lot of humor and the James Bond element. If you’ve never experienced Abbey Chase, then jump on and hold on tight.

Fathom – The incredible Michael Turner’s masterpiece! Sadly, I haven’t read the book for years and want to jump back in. Aspen Matthews is a woman who found out she wasn’t what she always thought! Fathom is great book of empowerment complete with masterful storytelling and beautiful art. We miss you very much Mr. Turner.

Liberty Meadows – A book I got into late, but fell in love the first time I read it. Despite the fact that the main character Brandy is absolutely beautiful, it’s the supporting cast that makes it happen! If you love talking animals, laugh out loud fun and the art of Frank Cho, than this book is for you!

Witchblade – What I thought would never last has proven me so wrong! Not just another pretty face, Sara Pezzini is a New York detective that has a weapon that fuses with her. Some 20 years later, Sara is still kicking…

Shi – Billy Tucci’s epic tale of a young Japanese girl who saw her family murdered and picks up the sword and goes nuts. The series is beautifully drawn and although violent at times, has a lot of thought, depth and very emotional.

Well, there you go! Do you agree or disagree? Speak now or forever hold your peace!

You had me at Liberty Meadows. Did you see the add for new Liberty Meadows? Kind of hot.

I totally agree with you on these, although I would rank Liberty Meadows in first place. I looked forward to that book every month. It was hilarious and eye-catching. I collected all those books back in the day, and would again if they came out by the same creators. I did see the 'not ready yet ad for Liberty. Is Cho going back to his original title?
