Matman Remembers Joe 'Pops' Kubert

Since Secret Identity got started and began its daily blog covering news about the comic industry, I have always dreaded writing about the death of two comic creators. Sadly one of them is being written now.

I just found out from comic fans and creators of the passing of comic legend Joe Kubert at the age of 86. Born in Poland in 1926, and immigrated with his family to the United States a few months after his birth.

In the 1940's, Joe began working in comics (at DC in 1942) and started what would be one of the most legendary and prolific careers in all of comic books. He drew everything but in the 1950's really found his calling working in the DC war comics line. Characters like Sgt. Rock, Enemy Ace and the Haunted Tank came to life under the pencil and ink of Kubert. He also added his stamp to Tarzan, Flash, Hawkman, Batman, Jonah Hex and Tor. Not only did he draw, write and serve in an Editorial function at DC he also founded the comic artist breeding ground; The Joe Kubert School.

I first met Joe in 1999 at a show in Philadelphia and was incredibly nervous about it. But, Joe (who was with his sons Andy and Adam) made me feel special. We had some time to chat about how I was first introduced to his work by my father and how at least 20% of my collection has his name somewhere on the books.

Our paths crossed five more times over the years but sadly at this point, Joe wasn't doing interviews at the time.  But he was still incredibly gracious and kind to me and put up with the 5 year old trapped in a 40 year old body.

What will I remember most about Joe? Obviously his incredible talent that has colored my world more than any other artist ever. But I will never forget our first meeting where I was shocked at his incredibly firm handshake, his smile and his way he made me feel like I was part of the family.

Goodbye Pops! I miss you already.
