In my next ‘Out Of The Longbox’ segment, I’m bringing to the party the classic ‘NFL Super Pro’ # 1. This comic seems, well real crappy when read against today’s books, but back in the day this didn’t seem quite as forced. For a brief moment in the early 1990’s, comic books, sports and cards were more intertwined than people may remember. There were comics based on sports guys (some even contained sports cards) and cards based on comics!
So as I put the comic down I began to think about what my sports comic character would be! So here we go… ladies and gentlemen, may I proudly introduce…
‘NHL Five Hole!’ – The official stereotypical hockey / superhero!
Five Hole! – Former hockey player Jean Claude Heroux was tired of seeing so many young Canadian kids drop out of hockey, drop out of school and drop out of life. Sadly his professional career was cut short when he tried to stop an assault outside the hockey rink he just finished playing in. But not just a game, a game where he scored a hat trick and put his team into the Stanley Cup Playoffs! In a sad yet ironic twist, the injury was not only physical, but mental as well! Jean Claude was injured by his little brother; Henri who was high on a new synthetic drug loose on the streets of Canada called ‘Maple Leaf’!
His battered and injured body was rebuilt by the Canadian Government in a program called ‘Operation: Socialized Medicine’ and outfitted with weapons created by KOHO, CCM and Cooper.
Weapon of choice is the ‘Stick of Justice’! This lightweight stick contains a laser shooting butt end and the blade shoots plasma pucks that come in stun or kill!
Also, when he drops the glove for hand to hand combat, the detachment from his uniform creates a force field that not only protects him but augments his strength.
So there you go…
What I want to see is you pick your favorite sport and the name of your own sports / superhero. Just pretend it’s the ‘anything goes’ 1990’s!
