Since 1999, Idea and Design Works have gone from an ‘indie’ company that make the best smelling comics to the fifth largest American comic company… and with good reason. Everything they publish is awesome. Brian regularly reviews the many ‘G.I. Joe’, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ and ‘Transformers’ books, I feel the need to say a little something about the IDW books I love.
Doctor Who – the ‘proper’ series is an incredible way to fill in the time between seasons. Writer Tony Lee (who is sadly all done with the series) has crafted some incredible stories that fit in perfectly with the TV series. A few artists have worked between the covers, but it’s Matt Smith (no not that one) that gets my vote.
Ghostbusters – I couldn’t tell you the names of the Ghostbusters, but I can tell you I love this book! Smartly written by Erik Burnham and drawn with style by Dan Schoening, ‘Ghostbusters’ is the kind of comic you can read just for fun and enjoyment!
Godzilla – With the new creative team of writer Jason Ciaramella and artist Victor Santos, the King of Monsters series is really starting to get good. But nothing can top John Layman’s ‘Godzilla: Gangsters and Goliaths’, which was brilliant! Also, look for the ‘Godzilla: Legends’ series as they focus on some of the lesser Toho characters.
Star Trek – continuing where the brilliant film left off, writer Mike Johnson and the art team of Stephen Molnar and Joe Philips have captured the new look Star Trek crew. Even if you’re not a Trek fan, this comic is just good storytelling.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Nothing can ever compete with the original series, but this slight ‘reboot’ is real good! Tom Waltz, Dan Duncan and series co-creator Kevin Eastman make it a freash read, but there are enough nods to the past to make longtime fans like me green with happiness!
