So many feelings, you guys.
Seriously, I cannot tell you how excited I am for "Spider-Verse," the Spider-Man event whose tag line is “Every Spider-Man--Ever.” Think about that. Think about how many cool Spider-characters we’ve seen over the years, whether they’re alternate earth Peters, "What If?" Mayday Parkers or Spider-Men from the far flung future. This event is all about bringing the Spider characters together to battle a predator that threatens all of their existence--The Inheritors.
Many of you remember Morlun from the JMS run of Spider-Man and the event "The Other.” He’s kind of like a vampire dude that sucks the life force out of Spider beings. Well, Morlun has a whole family, and together they have been going into different universes and killing off all the variations of Spider-Man. So the Spidey’s that are left have to band together to fight Morlun and company.
Amazing Spider Man #9, the first proper issue of Spider-Verse, is freaking fantastic. In it, peter Parker finally comes face to face with the other Spider-Men, Women and Hams that have been assembling from across the multiverse. And it is glorious. If you’re a longtime Spidey fan, some of the reveals in this issue will have you in tears, as they did me. Olivier Coipel’s art and Justin Ponsor’s colors absolutely sing in this issue, and they drive home the emotional beats of Dan Slott’s story.
This first issue covers a lot of ground, even though we’ve been getting plenty of set-up in the "Edge of Spider-Verse" prequels. Even with that though, the big moments are given room to breathe.
I am trying to keep my excitement in check, but "Spider-Verse," to me, has the potential to be the greatest Spider-Man event of all time. Here’s hoping that the rest of this story can keep up with its fantastic opening chapter.
