Our friend Kelly Yates (Doctor Who and Amber Atoms) has spent some time in the artist alley at many shows, but now he, Craig Rousseau and Rich Woodall have joined forces to bring us Artist Alley.
Here's Kelly to explain more.
"We consider ourselves a hub for creator-driven digital comics rather than a company trying to make a profit off other people’s ideas and our price structure proves it."
"We format our books to be around 10 or 11 pages of story, plus a cover for .99¢. We’re using PayPal at this point so they get .10¢ per transaction; Artist Alley Comics receives 9% to fund server space, web hosting, etc., and the creators receive 80% of the profit from their work."
"Fans also benefit by receiving a DRM-free PDF for they digital collection. We’re not out to fight piracy, we just ask that you own it responsibly."
"We also want to be clear that we’re not abandoning retailers. It’s a difficult marketplace and we understand that retailers want to support creator-owned projects, but when it comes to ordering 10 more copies of X-Men you know you can sell or 10 copies of an unproven project, retailers are going to make the choice that keeps the lights on. That’s why we want to go digital first and then collect for trade paperback once creators have enough material."
"Speaking of creators, we have an awesome group we want to promote during our initial digital launch. Many of the creators have or will provide a preview that fans can download for FREE at Artist Alley Comics!"
