Sometime in 2001 I picked up a copy of WONDER WOMAN # 164 (volume 2) because it had a Batman crossover called 'Gods Of Gotham'. Up to this point my knowledge of Wonder Woman was the awesome 70's TV show, her appearances in the SUPERFRIENDS and anytime she popped up in the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA comics.
As I read this comic I was blown away by this unknown (to me) creator named Phil Jimenez who not only co-wrote the book with J.M. DeMatteis but pencilled it. To say the book looked is an understatement!!! Phil's art was the exact style of art I love; realistic, expressive and powerful.
A few books into Phil's run, he began writing the stories by himself and I found myself being drawn into the deep and mysterious world of Wonder Woman. It wasn't long before WONDER WOMAN was one of my Top 5 books.
Sometime in 2002 I was at a comic show in New York and I was excited to see Phil was going to be there. I waited in line and when I finally met him, something clicked. What started with me telling him how much I loved what he was doing turned into a long conversation about his history with the character and my daughters. We exchanged numbers and would continue this chat; phone or email and then finally on a snowy day... a visit to my house and a weekend with my family. Watching him interact with my then young daughters made me love him and his work even more.
So yesterday I saw WONDER WOMAN and I couldn't stop thinking about Phil and how his passion for the character was so contagious it made me a huge fan as well. It made the movie seem more alive to me.
i don't see or chat with him as much anymore because of our schedules. I see him once a year and it is a hug, a quick recap and then I drop the bombshells that make us feel old.
So here it is Phil... Beky just graduated college and Sammy graduates High School tomorrow. That is the update on my Wonder Woman's... feel old?
Thank You again Phil!!!!
