For quite some time, Brian and I have had our struggles with THE WALKING DEAD and at times wonder why we still even watch it! As the ratings will tell you everyone is still watching and if people are struggling with it they are still being brand loyal.
For me the issues I have had are that it has become the same old thing. Instead of the classic ‘villain of the week’ we have replaced it with the ‘victim of the week’. It’s hard to create empathy for a character knowing he or she will be shot, chomped or chopped up by episodes end. The second problem I have is that it is such a downer show. Sure the zombie apocalypse isn’t supposed to be all fun and games but the only hope these people have is… death!
Well the past few episodes got me right back into the mindset of why this show worked in the past and when written with some emotion and heart, it is the best show on TV.
Two weeks ago we were introduced to a traveler who offered Rick and his group a place to live, free from the calamity and insanity of the outside. Of course Rick is skeptical of everyone and anyone and punches the guy and tells him he will kill him if the information he is telling him is false. This week the group enters the gates of this sheltered community and as they settle in, they struggle with the thought of relaxing and keeping their guards down.
AMAZING television!
The characters now have hope! Will it last? Of course not and it is gonna get bad before it gets good, but for one episode so far we see that a hot shower, clean sheets and a new set of clothes make me interested again in THE WALKING DEAD!
