I love super groups! Why? Because I love when musicians from different bands and styles meld their talents into a new sound and energy.
Sadly most groups like this cause more interest due to the members and the music and when something is released they are already broken up or the finished product just doesn't quite cut it.
So lets talk about the music shall me? The self titled debut from the Winery Dogs is one burner of a disc. Despite the band members pedigree, these songs are songs that kick like classic Humble Pie, Bad Company and I think I even here a little Lenny Kravitz, but still sound incredibly modern. From the firat single 'Elevate' to the last track 'Regret', this is one of the most complete and satisfying records of 2013. 'Desire', 'Not Hopeless',and 'Im No Angel' all get the blood flowing, but for me the standout track is the slow but powerful 'You Saved Me'.
So now lets talk about the band. Led by guitarist / vocalist Richie Kotzen is the biggest unknown for me. Sure I know that he replaced C.C. DeVille in Poison way back in 1992 but I knew nothing of his solo work. That will change! On bass is one of the greats, Billy Sheehan, who fills out the sound like only he can. On drums is the one and only Mike Portnoy who has traded in his big, symphonic sound for a more straight ahead rock sound...and I like it.
This album reminds me of the first ASIA album way back in 1982; not in sound produced but in the control the musicians display to make the songs the top priority. When you have musicians as talented as these three, it must be hard to not wanna just let loose.
So run to your local record shop (mine is Music Outlet in Enfield, CT) and get this one. It'll make you remember why you liked music in the first place.
