Leonard Nimoy Passes On!

2/28/2015

The geek wire was a buzz yesterday with the sad news about the passing of actor Leonard Nimoy at the age of 83.  Nimoy, who was born in Boston in 1931 was hospitalized a few days prior passed due to complications from COPD, a heart condition.
For so many of us Nimoy will forever be remembered as the Vulcan Science Officer, Mr. Spock from STAR TREK. In the recent relaunch of the STAR TREK franchise, Nimoy was able to reprise his roll and helped (for some) bridge the classic with the current.

Staring in over 40 films including INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) and so many classic TV series including the long running IN SEARCH OF..., Nimoy was also a poet, musician and a photographer and also served in the United States Army.

I met Leonard Nimoy in 2004 at United Fan Con in Springfield, MA and although my meeting was brief, I found him to be incredibly genuine and he had a sincere love for the fans. At this particular show musician John Wetton wanted me to bring him over so he could get an autographed picture. John and Leonard went on for about 10 minutes discussing one of John's former bands, King Crimson.

Review--SILK #1 (Marvel)

It’s been an embarrassment of riches for Spider-Man fans this past year.  Not only do we have Peter Parker back in the driver’s seat of his own body, but we just finished the fantastic Spider-Verse event, and we have new books spinning (no pun intended) out of it.

Enter Silk, the new series featuring Cindy Moon, a young woman who was bit by the same spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. After being locked away in a bunker for years, Cindy resurfaced in time to play a big role in Spider-Verse, and now she’s finding her place in the world she’s been away from for so long.

I’m glad Cindy’s getting her own series, because it gives us time to focus on her. As opposed to being one part of Spidey’s overall universe as she has been, this series flips that dynamic around. We see Spider-Man in this issue, but it’s from Cindy’s perspective--he’s a supporting character in her book.

And I think that’s what I like about Silk #1 the most--it feels like a book that stands on its own. The push-pull of Cindy trying to adjust to a crowded world when she’s so used to being alone is really presented well by writer Robbie Thompson. And as far as the look of the book--I am in love with Stacey Lee’s style already. Big and expressive, Lee handles both the action and the character moments superbly. Ian Herring’s colors are great, especially with flashback sequences.

Overall, Silk #1 pretty much gave me everything i could hope for out of a debut issue. This one’s getting added to the pull list.

Getting the biggest and best media guests can elevate any show and ConnectiCon just got one of the biggest... George Takei.... Oh My!

Not only was George Takei part of the original STAR TREK series but has appeared in so many classic TV series and movies. In recent years, Takei has become a spokesman, an award winner, a political figure AND one of the most popular celebrities on the internet.

Last year Takei was one of the most popular guests at Rhode Island Comic Con and comes to the Nutmeg State this summer, July 9th to the 12th!

AND... joining Lt. Sulu will be his STAR TREK partner on the bridge, Nichelle Nichols who played Lt. Uhura.

"
We're super excited to have two original cast members of Star Trek, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei," said ConnectiCon President Matt Daigle.  "George will be in attendance on Saturday and Sunday only, and will host a Q&A session sometime on Sunday."

Well... it's all over! For those of you you are friends with me on Facebook than you have seen the struggles and ups and downs of my Kickstarter campaign! But now I'm happy to report as of last friday, my MONKEY SEE... SEA MONKEY project was not only funded... but i spilled a little over the top by finishing with over $3,800.00.

WOW!

I have so many people to thank for this; those who contributed and as importantly those who spread the word. This was such a team effort and I never could have done it without you.  I know that sounds cliche, but I am so humbled by the outpouring of love and support.

So to give you an idea of the final 24 hours I can only describe it as the most insane and out of control time I ever had without life and death or babies being involved. As I went into the last hours there was a little flurry of action and then it all just stopped. My chest began to hurt and I was having a conversation with HB Comics writer Alan Hebert, who was telling me what I should do next.  Then, since he was a backer he was notified about the project being funded to which his next message was "Never Mind!"

So Now what do I do?  For the next few days I will edit the book and then hand it off to my wife.  With the money i will pay some artists, order a few sets of cards and then order a crap ton of Doctor Who and Sea Monkey books!  Then I will get out all my incentives and continue to hit every place that will let me sell books!

So once again thank you for the support and please continue to push mine and Brian's book projects.

Dark Horse Moves GHOST FLEET, SUNDOWNERS and RESURRECTIONISTS to Dark Horse Digital

2/21/2015

Press Release

Reaffirming its commitment to its fans and the storytelling vision of its creators, Dark Horse Comics is proud to announce the establishment of Dark Horse Digital Exclusives, which will include all-new, exclusive story content for The Ghost Fleet, Resurrectionists, andSundowners.

Additionally, Dark Horse will publish print graphic novel collections for The Ghost Fleet and Sundowners, collecting the DHDE original content for fans looking to complete their print collections. A full collection of Resurrectionists, featuring the final issues available as digital exclusives, will also be available, ahead of schedule.

“We are confident in the quality of these stories and want to ensure that readers have the opportunity to fully experience them,” said Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “Dark Horse is throwing its support behind these creators and their innovative titles, and we are choosing to continue them in a series of original graphic novels. These stories deserve to be told, and to continue in a reader-friendly and accessible format. In the meantime, for those who would like to continue reading the series, we will also offer new issues of each title on our Dark Horse Digital platform.”

Creators of the Dark Horse Digital exclusive series also expressed their enthusiasm and excitement at the opportunity to conclude their stories on both the DHD platform and in collected graphic novels.

“Since my very first baby steps with the company, Dark Horse has been incredibly welcoming and supportive—they take wild chances on wild creators with bananas ideas (Go get The Paybacks in September!),” Ghost Fleet writer Donny Cates said. “The market can be a bear sometimes; we all know this. It’s no one’s fault. As a former retailer myself, I know how hard the decisions that go into taking on new books can be. But instead of cursing the darkness, we’re going to shine a light. And in the case of Ghost Fleet it’s going to be a shotgun-fireball ending you’ll see from f#%ing space. Thanks to the tireless creative efforts of Daniel Warren Johnson, Lauren Affe, Chris Crank, our editorial heavyweights, and Dark Horse’s seemingly never-ending commitment to making great comics, we will give the fans what they deserve: an awesome ending to an awesome comic.”

“I’m not sure why some books succeed while others don’t, especially when I know Dark Horse has been making some super-cool, all-new, creator-owned material that I was proud to be part of,” Tim Seeley, writer ofSundowners, said. “But I’m glad they’ve got the dedication and respect to ensure readers and creators get to bring their stories to a logical conclusion.”

“I am a huge fan of both Ghost Fleet and Sundowners and am thrilled Dark Horse is committed to continuing them in another format, along with the remainder of the Resurrectionists run,” Resurrectionists writer Fred Van Lente said. “They’re all great comics, and moving them to the digital space is a great opportunity to give them another chance to thrive.”

New issues of The Ghost Fleet, Resurrectionists, and Sundowners on Dark Horse Digital will debut the same date as their originally scheduled print counterparts. Release dates for the graphic novel collections can be found below.

Going Kickstarter Crazy!!!

2/19/2015

Picture

As I enter the final few
days of my first
Kickstarter campaign I
have only one thought,
THANK GOD IT'S
ALMOST OVER!  I have
been encouraged by
the outpouring of
support from friends
and strangers alike.
But this is a project for the long haul, loaded with so many ups and
downs... like the stock market.

When i first set up this campaign I thought $3,500.00 was an easy reachable goal and with the initial pledges I was incredibly confident about my chances.  The first few days I was blown away by the support, but then reality sets in and you find yourself
checking the stat pages and emails every thirty minutes.  I went a few days with no support and then out of nowhere I received a few good ones to put myself back on track.  Then I would go a week with maybe a $20.00 pledge.

As i entered my third week I pretty much gave up.  The key to success in this to keep getting the word out.  Every day I would post on my Facebook page about MONKEY SEE... SEA MONKEY I started to feel like all i was doing was bothering people.  But then a friend would share my post and then I got $400.00.  I'd start feeling good, until...

Last weekend was brutal, so bad I honestly just gave up and began to wave thje white towel.  And then I started to feel real bad about it... like I was a failure and that I wasted everyone's time.  So for the last four days i didn't check anymore and began my excuse planning.

Then, with four days to go, something happened.  I got about $600.00 in pledges and that brought me over $2,000 and now made me feel like I could get the last $1,500.00 by Friday.

Blaaaahhhhhh, this is killing me!

So here I am, about $1,400.00 and about 40 hours to go.  Will I make my goal or will I fall short? Either way I need to be happy about the fact that I was able to do this, have a little fun and see what it was like to live on the edge!
