The Archie 'new look' continues with a book that was made for its creator!

Hitting the shelves on July 20th will be the long awaited BETTY & VERONICA written and drawn by Adam Hughes. Take a look at the pix and you will see this is a book that has already lived up to the hype!

Here is the sell...

"Best friends forever or arch-foes for life?

So many questions. But fear not – answers are less than three weeks away!

The next major New Riverdale hit series is coming your way courtesy of writer/artist Adam Hughes – and BETTY & VERONICA #1 is one comic launch you do not want to miss!
For your eyes only, here’s a first look at interior artwork from Hughes featuring the gang heading to Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe after hearing the news that it’s being taken over by a major coffee company!

BETTY & VERONICA will focus on the friendship between the two girls and less on ARCHIE. He has his own series, after all, by Mark Waid and Veronica Fish that’s out in comic shops every month. But you’re already reading that one, right?"

Why 'Non' Continuity Was/Is Fun

6/25/2016

Picture
by Matman

I am old! This is a fact proven by the year I was born... 1968. This is also backed up by the fact that I started collecting comic books in 1975. Back then, comics seemed to be just fun entertainment; stories to thrill, scare or just make you giggle. I didn't care how Flash could be hanging out with the Justice League on some far planet, yet still be in Central City fighting Rogues all in the month of June.

I love that we take our hobby serious... but I think over the past 20 years we have began to take them too serious. Super heroes don't follow the same daily planner as we do, have to stop and go the bathroom or worry about bills. That is for us to do and we want the escape from that... and that is what comic books do. Escape!!!

Back in 1977 to 1980, my comic book 'Golden Age' I was reading everything I could get my hands on. Although war comics were my thing, I would venture into the team up books like DC COMICS PRESENTS and THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and see what was going on in the non World War Two part of the DC Universe. And who cared if Sgt. Rock died at the end of WW2 but was teaming up with Batman thirty years after he died? Not me!

The point is, enjoy the stories for what they are... entertainment. Did you read a comic and feel entertained? Excellent! Now move onto another one and repeat cycle!

Kickstarter Alert: CROSSING by Enrica Jang and Alex Cormack

6/24/2016

Brian LeTendre

Our pal Enrica Jang over at Red Stylo Media has a new project in the works, and it looks fantastic. Check out the Kickstarter video for Crossing above, and then head over to the project page for more info.

Here's the project synopsis:

A rookie train conductor is haunted by the ghost of an annoying goth princess who threw herself in front of his commuter train.

She swears her death was a murder made to look like a suicide and she won’t “cross over” and leave him alone until he helps solve her case.

CROSSING will be a six-issue mini-series, and we're here on Kickstarter to print and distribute Issue #1. The comic is 24 story pages, full color, to be published digitally and in print. Despite some pretty mature, heavy-hitting themes (crime, suicide, railroad safety) the series is a comedy about two people who wouldn't like each other under normal circumstances--much less paranormal--but have to find a way to work together if they ever want to be free of each other.
Production for this first issue is already underway, and a print run of 1000 copies is guaranteed when we hit 100% funding. Script for the entire series is complete, as well as character design, and we'll be rolling straight into Issue #2 after we're funded. This series is happening, people, but we need you to help us get to the other side!

Press Release

The Inkwell Awards has released the names of the winners of its ninth annual awards for excellence in the art form of comic book inking. As before, nominees were chosen by a separate and independent nomination committee. Voting via live ballot at the non-profit advocacy’s website ran from April 15-30. One winner was chosen in each of five categories based on American-based interior comic-book work cover-dated 2015.

Separately, the Inkwells selected internally the two recipients of the annual Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award and the Special Recognition Award (SRA) category. Winners were contacted and some invited guests were present to receive their trophies at North Carolina’s Heroes Con, the host show for the Inkwells, for the sixth live ceremony on Friday, June 17. Vince Colletta
THE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD: Vince Colletta. Other nominees: Allen Milgrom, Jack Abel (tie for runner-up), Violet Barclay (aka Valerie Smith), Gary Martin and Dave Simons.

THE JOE SINNOTT HALL OF FAME: Frank Giacoia and Josef Rubenstein. Other nominees: Bob McLeod and Jerry Ordway (tie for runner-up), Dan Adkins, John Beatty and Ernie Chan (aka Chua).

Joe Sinnott, the award’s namesake and first recipient, made a statement in April regarding this year’s inductees:

“I was quite pleased to hear that the Inkwell Awards
has selected two very deserving inkers into the
Hall of Fame class of 2016: Frank Giacoia and Josef
Rubinstein.

Frank was a fabulous inker and a good friend of
mine, who left us much too soon. It was always
a pleasure meeting up with Frank at shows and
spending time with him. Frank’s smooth, thick line
graced the pages of virtually every Marvel title. I
really enjoyed Frank’s inking over Jack Kirby on
Captain America. Like myself, we pretty much
inked the Marvel Universe.

Joe is an outstanding inker and portrait artist as well.
I absolutely am honored by the great job he did in
capturing my likeness for the cover of the 2nd Annual
Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge. I once pencilled a piece
that Joe inked for The Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe Index collection. At that time Joe was doing
all these Marvel Universe books and he told me that
he had actually worked on more Marvel characters
than I had. Joe also did some great background inks
on the Superman Vs. Spider-Man Treasury Edition that
I inked over John Buscema.

It is wonderful that Frank and Joe are the recipients
of the 2016 Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award. These
two superb artists make the already great list of Hall
of Famers even more elite.

Thank you to the Inkwell’s committee for electing
them, and thanks to everyone for their continued
support of the Inkwell Awards.

Joe Sinnott

In cooperation with Special Inkwell Ambassador and award-winning author J. David Spurlock, the ceremony kicked off with a special appearance by industry legend Jim Steranko who discussed the artform of comic-book inking, his related experiences in the medium, and its artists, including Joe Sinnott and Frank Giacoia. Inkwell Awards founder and director Bob Almond acted as both ceremony host and presenter, joined by hostess “Ms. Inkwell,” as portrayed by Holly Black. Artist Breno Tamura accepted Joe Prado’s award as a pre-recorded video of Prado’s acceptance speech was played. Guest speaker, artist-writer Mike Grell, spoke for Rubinstein. Writer Todd Dezago spoke for Giacoia, and statements from their respective families, including for Vince Colletta, were read. Silver Inkwell trophies were presented to three nomination committee members who served five years: Michele Witchipoo, Bob Bretall and Johnny B. Gerardy. All acceptance statements from the winners can be found in the “Results” section of the Inkwell Awards' website in the near future.

It Started In The Cards... Lets Go Pens!

6/21/2016

People know me as a passionate and loyal guy! I stick with things that I like, i always have. In fact most of the things I love as an adult I have loved since I was a child. Comic books, STAR WARS, KISS, PLANET OF THE APES... I could go on and on. But my loyalties and passions also extend to my sports teams; the Montreal Expos (now the washington Nationals), the new England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Back in the mid 1970's when i started to follow sports i couldn't have picked three worst teams to follow. None won anything, all three had bankruptcy and ownership issues... but I stuck with them.

So how did I become a Pittsburgh Penguins fan living in Western MA? it started with a pack of hockey cards. Up to this point I was beginning to follow the New York Islanders (because of Mike Bossey) and for some weird reason, the Atlanta Flames. I was playing hockey and started to buy packs of cards after practices and the first pack i got had a bunch of players cards and one full tram card... THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS! It was that simple.

A few weeks ago the Penguins won their fourth Stanley Cup. I have been there for them all and all mean so much to me, but this one was so special. In December i kept telling people..."You watch. This team is like the first cup winner, a few key guys and a whole lotta castoffs." My daughter reminded me about our pact we made 10 years ago that if the Penguins win the cup we will get Penguins tattoos together.

Tattoo's a comin'!!!!!

DC REBIRTH - Detective Comics

6/16/2016

Picture
by Matman

I was so upset when the NEW 52 decided to renumber everything... including ACTION COMICS and DETECTIVE COMICS. These books are comic book history and as a young kid always counted down to those books hitting issue #1,000.

Well, DC came to their senses or listened to countless episodes of SECRET IDENTITY where I begged for this very thing to happen. And now... here we are.

So in the 'new' world of Batman, he doesn't seem to be a tormented jerk... he seems driven. In the pages of DETECTIVE COMICS #934, Batman joins Batgirl as they look to recruit and train members of the Bat family like Red Robin, Spoiler, Orphan (the former Batgirl) and Clayface. Yes... I said Clayface. Someone is out to get the 'team' and it's up to the senior Bats to help the younger ones.

This is a 'Bat Family' book that reminded me of the classic team up book; fun and exciting, brought to you by writer James Tynion IV, penciler Eddy Barrows and inker Eber Ferreira. The book is a great read, full of fun that makes me happy to be a Bat Fan!
