A Message From Chris Wisnia

Fans, it's been a long time!  I'm officially launching a new comics project this Monday, and I hoped you - or your kids - might enjoy a sneak peek! “DORIS DANGER’S GIANT MONSTER ADVENTURES" (which I've been publishing since 2004) is now a FREE web-comic, in terrifying FULL COLOR (by Ricky Sprague, for greater realism and shocks), with never-before-published, BRAND NEW pages posted every Wednesday, at www.patreon.com/dorisdanger!

Patreon is a fabulous site where artists can post their work, and if you enjoy it and feel so motivated, you are invited to contribute a small monthly subscription payment and receive secret-society-style BONUS FEATURES in return, such as access to additional pages, or original art mailed to your door.

"A fantastic hoot! Great pin-ups, too..."
– Dave Gibbons, co-creator of The Watchmen

If you don’t contribute, we can still be friends!  Please enjoy my comics for free and without guilt or pressure (click the "READ FOR FREE")!  If you enjoy my www.patreon.com/dorisdanger, share it with your kids, share it with your friends.  Link to it from Facebook and Twitter, and help me try to realize my dream.

“This has got to be the most eccentric comics project I’ve ever seen!”
– Daniel Clowes, creator of Ghost World

You may not know with how much passion and dedication I have been trying to succeed in the comics industry, despite a day job, two kids, and a mortgage.

If I can find enough supporters of art and artists, who find satisfaction from investing their support literally into the hands of a creator (in your community?), and who believe that MY passion and dedication are worth as little as a dollar a month, I could afford to make a living by creating art that gives people pleasure.

The WARLOCK 5 Kickstarter Is Live!

4/27/2017

by Brian LeTendre

Last week on the show we mentioned an upcoming Kickstarter for Warlock 5, a continuation of the 1980s sci-fi series from Aircel Comics, that followed the adventures of five guardians from different dimensions that had to band together to protect all of reality.

Well, the Kickstarter for the project is now live! You can check out the video above and then go here to official Kickstarter page for more info on the project, as well as a list of backer rewards.

From the Kickstarter page:

Five guardians protect the multiverse against the chaos that lurks outside the boundaries of reality. There's only one problem: they hate each other.

Originally created by Gordon Derry and Denis Beauvais, Warlock 5 was published by Barry Blair, a Canadian comic book publisher, artist and writer, known for launching Aircel Comics in the 1980s. A fierce advocate for innovation in the themes, genres, and types of illustrations, Blair helped to bring titles to life that broke the narrative and graphic boundaries at the time — including Warlock 5.

The new Warlock 5 Kickstarter seeks to fund this continuation of the Aircel Comics classic fantasy masterpiece. This 2017 reboot is written by CULLEN BUNN and JIMMY JOHNSTON, illustrated by JEFFREY EDWARDS with colors by ANDY POOLE, letters by ED DUKESHIRE, and designs by EDWARD LAVALLEE and SHAWN T. KING.

This saga of rivalry, betrayal, magic, dragons, and killer robots is aiming for a 60-page full-color (hard cover) original graphic novel; however, we need your help getting there!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's episode of Secret identity, which features an interview with Warlock 5 artist Jeffrey Edwards!

Brian and I would like to thank Tina and Marisa for all their hard work and efforts for last weekend's AVON CON!!! We had an amazing time, met some cool creators and were introduced to some fantastic people.

First of all, the Avon Free Public Library is a beautiful building that offers so many cool things. The staff are helpful, friendly and at least on this day... dressed to GEEK!!

Brian and I each did panels and had full audio and video capabilities so when I say we brought it... we brought it.

Next to our table was a super cool green screen photo booth where you could take your picture with a bunch of different backgrounds. This was the most happening place in the show.

Before the show we caught up with artist Matt Ryan and we were discussing the current state of the industry, particularly all the shows and some of the dealings we have had with promoters. Matt said before he does a show he now asks "Why are you putting on this show?" This way he can get a feel for where the motivation and the heart is of the promoter.

By the way we were all treated last Saturday, the motivation for AVON CON was to have fun, celebrate the culture and bring new fans into what we love so much.

Thank You!!!

Vote for the Inkwell Awards by 4/30!

4/24/2017

Who's your favorite inker? The Inkwell Awards, a non-profit organization devoted to the education and promotion of the art of comic book inking, invites all to vote for the industry’s best of the year. The official public ballot is available on the Inkwells’ homepage through April 30.

Voting is open to fans and professionals alike. In addition to “Favorite Inker,” categories include “Most Adaptable,” “PROPS” (inkers deserving more attention), the “S.P.A.M.I.” (Small Press And Mainstream Independent) and “All-In-One” for pencillers who ink their own work.

As a courtesy, also listed on the ballot are the nominees for the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame (“HoF”), a lifetime achievement honor for an outstanding inking career of 25 or more years in American comics, whose winners are chosen by an internal committee (to avoid a “popularity contest” where recent names have more influence than past masters).

Two years ago the Special Recognition Award (SRA) was introduced and nominees for it also listed on the ballot with voting being done internally. This lifetime achievement honor differs from the HoF award due to one or more factors such as the artist being out of the “public eye,” having limited name-recognition due to semi- or full retirement or death, limited-yet-influential output, social barriers such as gender/race, or other factors that might otherwise limit them from being nominated for a traditional HoF award. The SRA nominees are not listed this year but they will be discussed at the awards ceremony along with the SRA award recipients.

“We’re as excited as ever for this event, where the best of the best ink artists and their work get the recognition they deserve,” said Bob Almond, founder and director of The Inkwell Awards. “Though inkers have their fans and followers, many often go unnoticed or glossed over by most awards events. Ours caters specifically to ink artists and allows them to be recognized and appreciated in various categories. The more voters, the better.”

Once voting ends after April 30, the winners will be announced at the live awards ceremony at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC on Friday, June 16th.

The Inkwell Awards is an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. Now in its ninth year, the organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and numerous contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

Classic Look Returns with YOUR PAL ARCHIE

4/20/2017

Picture
by Matman

A few years back Archie Comics really took some chances that certainly had paid off! AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, LIFE WITH ARCHIE, SABRINA and all the new look books brought Archie and his pals to an all new audience.

Now every Thursday evening we get to indulge in the Twin Peaks/soap opera/Teen drama styling of RIVERDALE and if you haven't watched it yet...HOLY COW!!!

Well... Archie omics recently announced the return of the classic characters in classic situations with the ever classic Dan Parent at the helm!!!

Classic Archie is back with a fun twist in YOUR PAL ARCHIE, a new all-ages comic book series launching in July from artist Dan Parent and writer/inker Ty Templeton.

Parent, in his 30th year drawing Archie and the gang, continues his legendary run at the company with a tweak on the hugely popular Archie look, keeping his iconic style fresh and vibrant.

“I've been fortunate enough to be drawing in the classic style for so long, that I eventually formed my own style based on the Dan DeCarlo/Bob Montana model,” said series artist Dan Parent.

“In addition to drawing lots of classic Archie stories for the digests, I've been working on the digital first series LIFE WITH KEVIN, starring Kevin Keller. I had a feeling a classic monthly title might come back into the fold. So here it is!”

Parent’s artwork will be influenced from the styles and fashion of The CW’s hit new RIVERDALE TV series, but will remain familiar for fans of the classic style.

“The influence from the show is more of a fashion makeover for me. I've changed the hairstyles a bit, and the clothes. And the faces are a little more detailed, but the line work is still the simple classic lines I've always used.”

YOUR PAL ARCHIE will hit the shelves on July 26th!
