How I Would 'R Word' DC

1/29/2016

With the world 'abuzz' about the upcoming DC 'relaunch' this June it made me think about what I would do if I was given the task of the 'restart'. Are you ready?

* First of all I would bring ACTION COMICS and DETECTIVE COMICS to their numbering if the reboot didn't renumber them. This would celebrate the history of DC and the titles would be used to tell all era stories about Superman and Batman.

* There would only be one title each for all characters (other than the above mentioned). Only one Justice League book, one Wonder Woman with no exception.

* I would put the best creators on the best books for a one year commitment! They would be able to tell the stories that they want to tell as long as when the year was up someone could take over and do the same thing.

* Fringe characters like Jonah Hex, Swamp Thing, Kamandi and the like would be given mini series or one shots. This would ensure the continued life of the characters without forcing stories and committing to just filling quotas.

* Would do all I could to make the books no more than $2.99 each. Whatever it took... a few less pages, more adds...

* Characters would mirror their cinematic counterparts; FLASH, ARROW, GOTHAM, SUPERGIRL and the upcoming movies. This would make it easier for people to follow along or just jump in.

* The line and every book would begin with the origin; days before and the actual event, and then would continue with day TWO... not five years later.

Alana's Abbott's REGAINING HOME is Now On Drive Thru!

Those of you who have been following Secret Identity since the early days will remember my pal Alana Abbott and her Redemption series of novels. They originally began as a tie-in series to the Chronicles of Ramlar RPG setting, but when the publisher of that setting closed up shop, the series was left in limbo. Alana was able to eventually secure the rights to the books and launched a successful kickstarter campaign to fund the final installment, Regaining Home.

And now, it's here. Here's the blurb:

War has come to the Reach. When his minions fail to deliver Nara al'Sheed, Zychariss, the most powerful necromancer in Eranon, takes matters into his own bony hands. As undead soldiers and demons surround them, Nara, Taru, Kennerly, and Lydia must raise an army. Because to save all of Eranon from falling to Zychariss, first, they must save their home.

You can get Regaining Home (as well as Into the Reach and Departure) right now over on Drive Thru Fiction by clicking here. As a Kickstarter backer, I got my copy early, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. This series has become one of my all-time favorites.

Press Release

Captain Action Enterprises, LLC and Airship27 are excited to announce the release of the Jim Beard’s Captain Action: Riddle of the Glowing Men Radio Archives Audiobook.

This adventure features Captain Action, the superspy character introduced in 1966 as the world’s first superhero action figure.  Jim Beard’s thriller tells how Captain Action must team up with the beautiful Uliana Ulanova as they traverse the globe and ultimately discover a lost Siberian city, in order to stop the insidious plans of Dr. Evil.

“It was hard for me to imagine how much more exciting it could be to be involved in the creation of this book, but now the audio version takes that to a whole new level. It would be an understatement to say that the action of Riddle of the Glowing Men comes alive; it lives and breathes in a whole new way, thanks to Airship 27 and Radio Archives.” said author Jim Beard.

Fred Wolinsky narrates this unabridged audiobook from Radio Archives and Audible.com.

“Captain Action: Riddle of the Glowing Men is a real rocket ride. And author Jim Beard channels his inner Ian Fleming, as though he was writing a Doc Savage adventure,” said Ed Catto, a Founding Partner and Retropreneur at Captain Action Enterprises. “This is another fantastic initiative that we’re proud to announce as part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration.”

Fans can purchase the audiobook from Amazon.com or directly from Audible here: Captain Action: Riddle of the Glowing Men

Additional 50th Anniversary plans are scheduled to be announced.

DC To 'Reboot' Again?

1/24/2016

Word on the streets (i'm not sure it has been confirmed yet) is that DC will do a major reboot this summer. The plan is to have the comics follow more in line with the TV and movie world that DC has created. With the DC movies not as strong... i'm hoping they are gonna follow along with what is happening on the small screen.

It is no secret that DC's 'New 52' was incredibly ambitious, fairly well received but overall was kinda mixed. As we are four years on, many of the heroes like Superman and the Teen Titans have failed to dig roots with many readers... like myself. Although i'm an 'old school' reader, I just want good stories, greatness in my heroes and badness... but not real life psychotic in my villains.

I will have more on this this week as confirmation comes thru!

The Fun Of Comic Books!

1/22/2016

Picture
by Matman

Yesterday, Brian and I recorded another episode of Secret Identity and in this installment of OUT OF THE LONGBOX I take a look at an incredibly funny and very satisfying comic, THE OFFICIAL MARVEL NO-PRIZE BOOK!

The Marvel No-Prize was implemented in the early 1960's at the dawn of Marvel Comics and the Silver Age as a way for Marvel to interact with its fans and to more importantly... not take themselves too seriously. The history is... if a fa found an error of any kind, they would write in and receive a cash prize, free comics or something like that.

In an early issue of FANTASTIC FOUR Stan Lee offered no prize for people to write in and tell what they thought the Marvel Age of Comics was. With no prize given, there would be no loser! When fans began to demand NO-Prize, the company decided to send something and in 1967, the MARVEL NO-PRIZE was created. It was an empty envelope that contained this wording...
"Congratulations, this envelope contains a genuine Marvel Comics No-Prize which you have just won!"

Press Release

Action Lab Entertainment’s biggest collaborative effort to date, ACTIONVERSE, is finally here. Very few independent companies have attempted a crossover of this scope successfully. With ACTIONVERSE, Action Lab Entertainment once again proves they don’t just break the rules, they break the mold by having five separate creator owned series collaborate into a single story. A spin on the old school style of interdimensional crossovers like CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS and SECRET WARS, ACTIONVERSE will be a launch pad for an entire roster of new characters and concepts debuting in 2016 and beyond.

The crossover can be enjoyed not just by fans, who finally get to see characters from the Action Lab’s creator-owned universe come face-to-face for the first time, but to newcomers as well. There’s a hero for everyone in this story, from Molly Danger, a young girl stranded on Earth away from her alien home world, to Virtue, a superhero whose moral compass is broken. 'Ambassador' Rich Buckler

Press Release

Legendary “Bronze-Age” comic-book artist Rich Buckler (Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Thor, creator of Deathlok, et al.) has agreed to support the artform of inking by joining the ranks of professional ambassadors for the Inkwell Awards inking advocacy.

In a statement, Buckler said:

“Let’s hear it for the ink artists of the comics! And they are artists. And you know, I have so many favorites! I will even go so far as to say that a capable and skillful inker is, for pencil artists, a veritable treasure. I have written a lot about inkers and the craft of inking comics. Many pencillers do not appreciate them enough. That’s what I think.

“As a comics industry insider, I have endeavored in my writings on various blogs and websites to increase comics fandom's awareness of the valuable contributions of these craftspeople who devote their careers to drawing in ink. I sincerely hope I have shed some light on just what these artists contribute to the pencil art and what it is that they actual do.

“I love to collaborate. I always have. And over the years I have had the pleasure to team up with many of the very best! For that I am grateful. Yes, I do also ink my own comic art. But comics, when it comes to the covers and interior art and the sheer magic of the medium, are for the most part a collaborative art.

“So let’s hear it for the comic book inkers!”

Ambassadors have been recruited since the formation of the organization in 2008, starting with artist Adam Hughes and editor Mike Marts. The most recent recruits were author Clifford Meth, writer-artist Jim Starlin and color artist Laura Martin. Members are drawn from various community skills and professions in a display of support and solidarity for the promotion of the art form of comic-book inking.

Season 8 began last summer with a “Help Wanted” announcement to replace departed volunteers from the previous season. “We were able to reorganize and fill some vacant roles and train them on the job over the fall,” said Inkwell Awards director Bob Almond. “We can always use more capable, dedicated people to help build and strengthen our organization, especially with matters related to fundraising. But there were also some advancements in the ranks from those members who’ve been paying their dues.”

Among those is the promotion of artist-writer Mike Pascale to assistant director. Pascale, a committee member since 2013, fills a position left by outgoing assistant director Michael W. Kellar. Besides administrative matters, Pascale handles copy and graphics, proofreading, and assists with fundraising. Joining the committee as contributors are two new members recruited from last fall's membership drive: Rhys G. Evans, who handles website maintenance and has been acting as auctioneer (along with Pascale), and inker John T. Dixon, a disabled veteran who’s taken on the duties of Inker Resources & Database updates, advertising, and Nomination Committee Assistant.

In addition, Holly Black, who portrays the company spokesmodel Ms. Inkwell, is now a senior contributor after attending and fundraising at shows in that role for nearly a year. Daniel Best, a founding committee member, also returns to the organization as a senior contributor after a several month absence.

The Inkwell Awards (www.inkwellawards.com) is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. Now in its 8th year, the Inkwells are overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and numerous contributors. The organization sponsors the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and hosts the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.
