Spider-Man 2099 Returns!

3/31/2014

I needed to post this story before April Fool's Day so Brian wouldn't think I was playing with his emotions, BUT apparently his dream of a 'Spider-Man 2099' series has been heard and answered.

Since his return in 'Superior Spider-Man', Miguel O'Hara is now a man without a home, but writer Peter David and former 'Fearless Defenders' artist Will Sliney will be telling the story of Spidey 2099 trapped in 2014 to help try to save his future!

The series launches in July...maybe the week of Brian's birthday!

Happy 8th Birthday, Secret Identity!

3/28/2014

by Brian LeTendre

Eight years.

It's been eight years since Matt Herring and I posted the first episode of the Secret Identity podcast. Well, technically we called it a "zero" episode, but it was the first show of what would turn out to be one of the longest running comics podcasts (or any kind of podcast, for that matter) around.

For eight years, Matt and I have gotten together evere week to talk about comics, movies, TV, toys, games and all of the other geeky things we love. We've interviewed hundreds of creators, including some of the biggest names in the industry.

Most importantly though, we have made some really great friends and have been blessed with an amazing community of listeners who continue to make Secret Identity a joy to put out every week.

So, as we celebrate our eighth birthday, and we head toward our 600th official episode, Matt and I want to thank every single person who has ever taken time out of their own lives to spend an hour or two with us. There is never a day that goes by that we aren't not thankful for you.

Thanks for eight great years, and to whatever the future holds!

Oh, and if you want to hear the very first episode of Secret Identity, you can check it out in the player below. For newer episodes, you can check iTunes or our podcast page.

Review--All-New Soulfire #1 (Aspen)

3/24/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

Having no ties to the previous versions of Soulfire, I was excited to jump into this new series featuring one of Aspen’s more popular characters. This incarnation is written by J.T. Krul and Frank Mastromauro with art by V. Ken Marion (pencils) Mark Roslan (inks) and Kyle Ritter (colors).

We learn in the prologue that the world of Soulfire is one in which magic has long since disappeared. It’s now the year 2213 and a young man named Malikai has brought magic back into the world. He is accompanied by a winged woman named Grace (who adorns the cover of this issue) and a group of adventurers.

The first issue of a the series introduces a new female character to the group, and sees the group head to Paris, France for a battle tournament that Malikai’s colleagues are entering. We also see the main villain of the series pondering his past defeats and beginning a new plot to use both technology and magic to reclaim his place of power.

While there is a lot of recapping past events in this issue, it still felt to me like I’ve missed out on quite a bit. For the most part, the main characters are already established and I think the creators are assuming that readers are at least familiar with what has come before. The artwork is great overall, and the world of Soulfire is vibrant and colorful, filled with unique characters that I’d like to know more about.

In order to learn more about that world though, I get the feeling I’ll have to go digging into previous series, as this series feels like it will require that previous knowledge.

Overall, Soulfire #1 is an interesting read, but not necessarily new-reader friendly.

Size Don't Matter For Captain Action

3/22/2014

Press Release

ZICA, a manufacturer of pop culture icons and Captain Action Enterprises, licensors of the popular Captain Action toy line, have teamed up to produce a series of retro 3.75” figures. These products will be on sale internationally in late 2014.

“ZICA Toys is very happy to be working with Captain Action Enterprises on bringing the exciting characters of the Captain Action universe into 3.75" retro figure format!  This scale will allow us to do a lot of really cool stuff with the property in addition to just making the action figures.  My favorite thing about the smaller scale figures when I was a kid was the vehicles and play sets that went with them, and I can definitely see some exciting possibilities for these with Captain Action!” said Craig Owen, owner of ZICA toys.

Captain Action is based on the action figure created in 1966 by Stan Weston for Ideal Toys and sold internationally. The hero came equipped with a wardrobe of costumes allowing him to become many different heroes such as Batman, The Lone Ranger, the Green Hornet and many more. In 1967, Captain Action proved so popular that the line was expanded to include a sidekick, Action Boy and a blue skinned alien foe with bug eyes, the nefarious Dr. Evil.  The following year, DC Comics licensed the character from Ideal and published five issues of Captain Action featuring industry luminaries such as Jim Shooter, Wally Wood and Gil Kane.

The line has experienced as strong resurgence with toys, comics and collectibles. An animated series is being planned.

“We’re excited to jump into the this exciting segment, and have been very impressed with the Six Million Dollar Man toys from ZICA,” said Ed Catto of Captain Action Enterprises. “

Current plans call for the first wave to include characters such as Captain Action, Action Boy, Dr. Evil and the Silver Streak.

“We’re also very excited to work with ZICA to develop vehicles and play sets”, said Joe Ahearn of Captain Action Enterprises. “And we will also be exploring the development of vehicles such as the Silver Streak, Captain Action’s amphibious car, in other scales and formats.”

The new products will debut in late 2014.

Review--Wolverine #1 (Marvel)

3/20/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

I love Paul Cornell and Ryan Stegman, but the first issue of their new Wolverine series was a bit of a disappointment for me.

Admittedly, I have been out of the world of Wolverine for quite some time, but when I see a first issue, I’m assuming it’s an opportunity to jump on board. In the prologue text on the title page, I learned that Wolverine recently lost his powers and has had to relearn how to take care of himself without relying on his mutant healing factor. Sounds like a pretty good premise to me.

Unfortunately, a turn of the page results in the reader being thrown into the middle of a story, where Wolverine is acting very out of character. He seems to be working with and for some shady people, and in a flashback we see Storm trying to counsel him as he struggles to deal with his new powerless existence. When we flash back to the current mission Wolverine is on, the issue ends with what is supposed to be a shocking moment, but to me just added to the confusion I’d been feeling from the first page.

Now, I know that part of the intent with this issue is to keep the reader off-balance. We are meant to understand that this is not the Wolverine we’re used to seeing. But I think the creative team was a little too clever for their own good. When the sense of mystery descends into confusion, I end up losing interest in the story. That’s what happened here.

The bright spot in this issue for me is the artwork of Ryan Stegman (pencils), Mark Morales (inks) and David Curiel (colors). Stegman makes the action jump off the page, and I really like his take on the character.

I’ll give this series a second look, but I’m hoping the next issue takes a deep breath and then makes things clearer for readers. As a first issue, Wolverine #1 just doesn’t work for me.
