Save Money And Be Entertained!!!

In a time when we complain like crazy, and rightfully so, about the ever growing price of comic books wouldn't it be cool to have a comic book, A NEW ONE, for $2.50? And we re talking about a real live comic book! Not to mention... an entire line of comics? Color? Quality? YUP and YUP!

A few months ago I picked up the first ten comics from Double Take and entered an amazing and very cohesive universe. The series of books take place following the events in the 1968 cult classic film, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! But these comics are not zombie books, they are stories that follow people and places as the end of the world has come to Evans County, Pennsylvania.

What I love about these books is that despite their following the same themes, each comic takes a very independant look at different events and situations. There is a book and a situation...and style for every comic fan. For the fans of police and FBI tales you have HONOR, SOUL and Z-MEN! Straight horror you have RISE (featuring our pal Jeff McComsey) and DEDICATION! For comics about escape and survival...HOME, SPRING and SLAB. My two favorites are MEDIC and REMOTE; books that are intense, a little gory and kinda over the top!

So instead of complaining about the price of comics and the fact that storylines don't contain continuity... take a Double Take!

Lemmy Passes At 70

12/29/2015

Music fans across the world were shocked to discover the news about Motorhead's Lemmy passing away on Tuesday.  Lemmy passed away from an aggressive form of cancer.

Ian Kilmister became a fixture on the British music scene in the late 1970's when his band Motorhead created a unique aggressive sound that not only waved the banner for the fledgling Heavy Metal movement, but also was accessible to the growing Punk Rock movement.

Along with 'Fast' Eddie Clarke and drummer 'Philthy' Animal Taylor, Mortorhead created the 'fast' sound that became instrumental in the development of Thrash Metal. But it wasn't just musically that Lemmy was influential. His look and his 'devil may care attitude was pure Rock n Roll and as many have said... not an act. Despite the 'live fast' way of life, Lemmy was never seen out of control and was always cordial and accommodating with fans and fellow musicians.

Current Motorhead drummer Mickey Dee said the band would not continue.

Despite changes in music Motorhead continued to release new music and tour with 2010's THE WORLD IS YOURS and this years BAD MAGIC ranking as two of their best releases ever.

Look-out afterlife.. here comes Lemmy!

The Force Awakens (No Spoilers)

12/27/2015

Due to the fact that so many people haven't seen STAR WARS - THE FORCE AWAKENS, I have resisted a public review... but I can't hold off anymore... so here you go a spoiler free review!

To say THE FORCE AWAKENS is everything we fans hoped for is a huge understatement! Despite the fact that i love the 'prequels' I have waited to see what happened to the Star Wars Universe following the dreadful RETURN OF THE JEDI!

Well, the galaxy is in huge turmoil with the Empire now giving way to the First Order, led by the evil Kylo Ren. Their mission is to hunt down Luke Skywalker who has gone missing for the past 30 plus years. The First Order, led by the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke have created a weapon that threatens not only the Republic but the entire galaxy.

As the film moves on we are introduced to three young heroes that have come from different worlds and backgrounds to save the galaxy. Much like Luke, Han Solo and Princess Leia did in A NEW HOPE, these three have not only survived their baptism of fire, but have become a team united for greater things.

Daisey Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn) and Oscar Isaac (Poe) not only bring fresh and different faces to the saga but are three characters and actors I can't wait to see grow as their roles expand.

The action in the film is non-stop! From the SAVING PRIVATE RYAN beginning to the fantastic battle at the end, everyone gets something. Director J.J. Abrams did everything I hoped he did for the STAR TREK franchise; make them fun, relevant and enjoyable for everyone. Mission Accomplished!

STAR WARS - THE FORCE AWAKENS is a great bridge for the new series of films being planned. Using existing characters (Han Solo, Chewbacca, Leia, Luke, R2-D2 and C-3PO) gave older fans the closure and familiarity they needed and give many who aren't even into STAR WARS a movie that stands alone.

I could go on and on in my praise for this move BUT i'm afraid the more I type, the more I may say something I don't want to... or give away spoilers. i will end with this... GO SEE THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW!!!

The Peanuts Movie - Review

12/26/2015

My family tradition on Christmas Day is to go to the movies. Sadly other than STAR WARS - THE FORCE AWAKENS, there wasn't anything else I wanted to see except for THE PEANUTS MOVIE. As I looked at the local listings I saw that in most theatres, the last day it was shown was December 24th.

What to do...what to do?

After a frantic search we saw it was playing at a small theatre in Manchester, CT... but not just nay theatre... the Parkade Cinemas! Those in the UK, Canada and China may not get a thrill from hearing that... but those who grew up in Western Mass and Connecticut have fond memories. The last time I was there was sometime in 1988 watching THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!

But anyway...this is about the movie! THE PEANUTS MOVIE was nothing less than a love letter from my childhood! Before STAR WARS, the Pittsburgh Penguins and most anything else (other than comic books) PEANUTS was so much to me.

First of all, the look of THE PEANUTS MOVIE may throw you a bit. Instead of its traditional flat look, the characters have been given a 3D life yet still retains the feel and gentle emotions of the originals. The film has two stories running through it; Charlie Brown falls in love and Snoopy flies in the deadly skies of World War I to save his true love from capture by the Red Baron. Both stories were simply beautifully presented and gave me so many moments that tears began to flow and my heart beat a bit faster.

For some the computer generated style took a bit of getting used to, but the first time Charlie Brown did something foolish or Snoopy caused trouble a real fan fell right in.

This was not just a great kids movie! This was a film with heart that was made by those who grew up on the films and wanted to create part of the legacy more than put their mark on it! From music, to voices, to dialogue this movie reminds us all what is good about life.

Now something else I must mention since there are several World War I  fighter planes shown; Sopwith Camel, Fokker Triplane and a few Fokker DVII... all the details were PERFECT! From the strut supports, engine access plates and rudder cuts, it was so awesome to realize that care was put into details most viewers would miss or not even care about.

Review: Squadron Supreme #1 (Marvel)

12/24/2015

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

I'm still trying to make my way through my "to read" pile of comics after spending November writing. So I'm a little late in getting my thoughts down on Squadron Supreme #1, but it's a book that's worth talking about for sure.

I've always been interested in the idea of a Marvel team based on DC heroes, but I've never been in on the ground floor of any of the Squadron's previous stories. Luckily, writer James Robinson provides the perfect jumping on point. This version of the team is assembled from worlds that were destroyed in Secret Wars. They all come from different worlds, and they have an axe to grind with those they believe are responsible for what happened to their worlds.

Issue #1 sees the Squadron taking on Namor, who led the destruction of Doctor Spectrum's world. By the end of the battle, it's clear that the Squadron is not messing around, and they're just getting started, which is bringing them into conflict with some of the other heroes of the new Marvel U.

Robinson's story is very easy to follow, and we get an intro to everyone on this version of the Squadron Supreme. As usual, Leonard Kirk's work is amazing (with strong inks by Paul Neary), and it's great to see these two back together after their great run on Fantastic Four.

Squadron Supreme #1 is a great first installment of what looks to be a very ambitious series. This group is going to make waves in the new Marvel U, and I can't wait to see who gets caught up in them.
