Remembering Those Lost On This Day

5/30/2016

Until last summer I never
had a friend or anyone
I knew die while serving
our country. Last
June America was shocked   by another senseless
shooting; this one at
an Armed Forces Recruitment Center in Tennessee. One of the 4 slain was Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan of Hampden, MA.

Sullivan was an American hero; serving two tours in Iraq, won 2 Purple hearts and was in his 18th year in uniform. One of the saddest and proudest moments in my life was watching the procession returning him home; police, motorcycle gangs, military escorts... the sad last trip of an American hero.

I saw his sister a few weeks ago and she is still devastated by the loss but told me her brother wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

Remember those who have fallen and pray for no more!

Ed Catto Talks Justice Society

5/27/2016

Press Release

Comics and Marketing Expert Ed Catto will explore the historical pop cultural significance of the 70s All-Star Comics revival of the Justice Society of America in this year’s Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide.

The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide provides prices for comics, but more importantly, since 1970 has become a detailed, annual celebration of comic history, with articles, industry trend reports and price listings.

“The Justice Society of America’s reboot in the seventies was an enormously important event in so many ways,” said Catto.  “It crystalized the ability of fan-favorite heroes, despite a confusing backstory, to headline an ongoing title. The series both re-introduced old favorite characters as well as introduced new characters to fans.”

“And creatively, this reboot allowed a legendary artist to enjoy a last hurrah in mainstream comics and helped launch the careers of long-lived industry favorites,” said Catto.

For this article, Catto enjoyed in-depth conversations with some of the creators involved with the relaunch, including writer Paul Levitz and artist Joe Staton.  J. David Spurlock, publisher of Vanguard Productions, provided historical insights representing the estate of Wallace Wood. And long-time Justice Society enthusiast Roy Thomas, although not directly involved with this effort originally, offered anecdotes and “secret origins” for the series.
The 46th edition of Overstreet comes out this summer with two covers, a diptych piece by Amanda Conner spread across two covers.  The Justice Society’s Power Girl is on the left-hand side, and the popular Harley Quinn is on the right. The book will be available in both hardcover and softcover editions.  As is the standard practice, fans are encouraged to order the hardcover edition from their local comic shop because it will be printed in limited quantities.

Additionally, The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #46 pays tribute to legendary artist Russ Heath. The master artist turns his attention to Sgt. Rock and the spirit of DC’s classic war comics with a new cover. This special edition features all the same contents as the standard edition.

The Justice Society article’s author, Ed Catto, is a founding partner of Bonfire Agency, a full-service marketing agency dedicated to helping brands navigate within Geek Culture. He is also a co-founder of Captain Action Enterprises, focused on re-establishing nostalgic characters for today’s audiences. Catto, an advertising expert, frequently speaks about and writes on the intersection of Geek Culture and marketing.

The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide will debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego, and will arrive in stores on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.  Retail for the hardcover is $35 and retail price for the softcover is $29.95. This Russ Heath variant cover is limited to 1,000 hardcover copies and 1,000 softcover copies.

Welcome To DC Universe Rebirth!

Today comic book history is being made. Yes… we have all heard that before… a zillion times… for a zillion different things. But today, DC Comics resets the lukewarm NEW 52 and hopefully returns to a more friendly, exciting and better executed DCU.

First of all, I don’t wanna just dismiss and bash the NEW 52 like everyone seems to do. There were some great moments and being a part of something ‘new’ was amazing. The problem was that it seemed a little disjointed with no long term plans beyond the ‘new’ part. And second and most important for me was that the characters weren’t all that likeable. Everyone seemed angry, confused or directionless especially the younger characters. It made me give up very early on TEEN TITANS and the JUSTICE LEAGUE books where it just seemed like a collection of angry people.

But there was plenty of good! But with DC REBIRTH, I’m expecting all good!
And?

DC REBIRTH is an amazing read that I won’t give away any MAJOR spoilers, so please feel free to read on.  The story begins where FLASHPOINT ended a few years back, with Bruce Wayne feeling devastated by the revelation that there is a world out there where he died and his father became Batman. But instead of Barry Allen being the catalyst for everything going on its Wally West who within the first few pages shows up wearing my favorite superhero costume of all time’ the red and yellow, open haired one he wore as, what seems to be late teens Kid Flash! All I will say about the plot is that it appears Wally West is collecting speedsters……

Written by Geoff Johns who more than anyone else in existence (besides me) holds the DCU sacred and will not tell an epic story without thinking of us old hardline Pre-Crisis readers. The only hint of anything I will say is get ready for the return of someone blue… in name and in color!

The art by Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis, Gary Frank and Phil Jimenez is a dream; each with similar styles that flow beautifully and perfectly. And at 80 pages for $2.99 you can afford to take a chance… then get ready to get sucked back into a fun and very human DCU.

Kickstarter Alert: POP STAR ASSASSIN by Ed Lavallee

5/24/2016

by Brian LeTendre

I am a huge fan of grindhouse-style stories, and the latest project from Ed Lavallee is dripping with old school b-movie madness. Pop Star Assassin takes place in 1977 and follows a drugged out Elvis impersonator (who may have a connection to the real Elvis) as he gets caught up in a conspiracy involving the mob, shady government agencies and more. The six-issue series is written by Lavallee and Matt Cashell with art by Marcelo Basile with covers by JM Ringuet.

You can check out the Kickstarter page for Pop Star Assassin right here.

Pledge rewards range from print and digital copies of the books to original artwork from the series. But be quick about it--there's only nine days left to fund the project.

New DC... New DC Logo

5/20/2016

Picture
by Matman

As a Marketing Major I know the importance of a solid recognisable logo and solid consistent branding. I also know how important it is to keep things cohesive especially when dealing with legacy and history.

AS DC Comics approaches their latest adventure, REBIRTH, the company has announced and put out there their new logo. For me this is the fifth change since i've been collecting... with the last logo being my least favorite. The peeling back design only seemed to work for me when a character was within the letters.

So now, as designed by Jim Lee we have a return to a very simplistic style, 'DC' in a circle! The look isn't bad but there is something I don't like about it and i can't quite put my finger on it.

Designer and DC big wig Jim lee has stated that the logo incorporates the logos of the big three; Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. As Lee posted, "The nooks and angles are meant to evoke the Superman ‘S’, the Wonder Woman ‘WW’ emblem and the Bat logo."

I don't quite see it but what I do see is a better 'branding' than the last one. Until they bring back the DC Bullet... it'll have to do.
