The twenty-fourth episode of See Brian Write is a special one, as I share a panel on writing comics that I moderated at Connecticut ComiCONN. Comics legends Danny Fingeroth and Denny O'Neil shared their experiences as writers and editors, answered questions from the audience and even put up with my questions as well. They were both fantastic and I had an absolute blast.

Always on the lookout for something a little bit different to read, something out of the ordinary, I always seem to go back to the flagship title from Avatar Press, CROSSED! CROSSED is a look at an insane world following a devastating plague that has turned the victims into raging, psychotic murderers who are driven to do horrible things to others and to themselves. Much like the WALKING DEAD, CROSSED follows survivors in this horrible world. But unlike the WALKING DEAD the bad folks in CROSSED are in full control of their intelligence, skills and abilities... they just wanna do horrible things to anyone and everyone and everything... people, animals... it all gets pretty brutal! Created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows, CROSSED has gone from a 10 issue series to 13 collected trades and a new series CROSSED: ONE HUNDRED written by legend Alan Moore featuring art by Gabriel Andrade. CROSSED is a book for those who love their entertainment a bit crazy! I don't read a lot of books like that but every time i get a trade I read it in one sitting and then have nightmares following my reading. There certainly are things that you will see that will be hard to shake but every once in a while... that can be fun. ![]() by Matman If you didn't already know, I had knee surgery last Tuesday afternoon. This was my second time having a knee cleaned up (I had a torn Meniscus and holes in the ACL fixed in my right knee about 15 years ago), and it couldn't have gone any better. I just wanted to thank y'all for the messages, support and many prayers that made the whole thing go so quick. Recovery.... not as quick! The reason that I'm posting this is not to explain and tell you all the gory details, or freak out Brian with all the needle parts, but once again it makes me realize how cool and supportive the 'Secret Identity Podcast family' really is. I can always count on my texts, emails and Facebook IM's blowing up with your concern. So a few days following the surgery I have been starting to get around the house a bit, watching a lot of TV (binge watching ARROW, IMPRACTICAL JOKERS and JOHN CARTER on BluRay) and reading a bunch of comics and Billy Idol's autobiography. I've done a little bit of writing but for the most part i've done most of what the doctor told me to do. Yesterday I had a surprise visit from my old school friend Scott and his wife Wendy. They wanted to come by, catch up on things and pick up some books for gifts for friends. Thanks again guys!!! As far as book stuff... I have a few announcements to make next week about trips to New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut as well as some details about a few shows in Florida!!!! So again thanks for the love you guys give Brian and I and stay tuned for more stories about the health of two old dudes! by Brian LeTendre
Six issues into Robert Venditti and Van Jensen’s run on The Flash, things are really starting to get interesting. In the wake of their first story arc, we’ve got a future version of Barry Allen trapped in the present, and our version off in some strange place that resembles the Savage Land (yes I know that's a Marvel reference). But this future version of Barry is a cold-blooded murderer, who seeks to eliminate future criminals before they ever reach their bad guy potential. While our Barry is fighting for his life in the jungle, future Barry is jumping right into our Barry’s life with Patty, at the police station and with Iris and Wally. There’s a ton of potential for this storyline, and this first issue of the new arc really sets things up well for both our Barry and future Barry. On a sad note, one of two pencillers on this issue, Andre Coelho, passed away at the age of 35 back in October. I was not overly familiar with his work, but if this issue is any indication, he was extremely talented. His style meshed well with Brett Booth's, and inker Norm Rapmund pulled their work together very nicely in this issue. Anytime there are changes to a creative team on an ongoing book, things could go either way. It’s great to see that The Flash is in good hands, and it continues to be one of the best books since the New 52 began. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man? Santa!
Oh--and The Shadow! It's that time of year again! Every year for Christmas we re-air an old radio drama, some Christmas-themes episode of a show from the golden age of radio. This year, we've got an episode of The Shadow radio program, one that was originally broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1939. So grab some egg nog and enjoy. Merry Christmas, and we'll be back on Monday with a new episode of Secret Identity! "Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the ear candy is so delightul..."

For those who don't know me and my comic loves, TEEN TITANS has been my favorite team since I discovered Kid Flash belonged to a team. In the 1970's the team was the classic Robin, Speedy, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl and Aqua Lad and was an amazing team trying to find their way in the superhero world; dealing with powers, love and typical teen problems. In the 1980's George Perez and Marv Wolfman brought the team to new heights and made of comic's most definitive runs with the NEW TEEN TITANS. Added were Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy who defined the team and in my opinion, still defines the team. I know I'm older now but I don't think the essence of the team should be changed. Other than the addition of some new heroes I don't care much about, the team is unlikeable! All superhero teams need to have at least one jerky character, now the current team has THEM ALL jerky! It is impossible to read! The creative team of writer Will Pfeifer and artist Scott Hepburn are just not getting it. The art (at least for me) doesn't fit the book and Will's writing just seems to be... there! Nothing spectacular and Will usually is a fantastic writer. It just seems like the TEEN TITANS series is following in the path of a lot of the New 52; inconsistant stories and not quite getting a handle on the characters. Want a great DC team book? Try SUICIDE SQUAD! Everyone is a jerk on this team but that is OK! |
