Matman's Favorite Captain America Stories--# 5

6/30/2012

Picture
by Matman

As I count down my five favorite Captain America stories, I begin to realize what an incredible character he is and what amazing stories have been told about the Star Spangled Avenger!

My number 5 pick is an interesting one... because it never even happened!

'What If' # 5 (from 1977) tells the story 'What If Captain America hadn't vanished during World War Two'. We all know that the motorcycle Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes were using failed to reach Baron Zemo's rocket in time. In the ensuing explosion Bucky was killed (well, sort of) and Steve fell into the ocean, being revived by the Avengers 20 years later.

In this story (written by Don Glut), the motorcycle was a few seconds faster and both Cap and Bucky stopped the rocket and in turn survived to see the end of World War Two. From that moment, events and history is changed 'What if' style. Cap becomes head of SHIELD, Buck becomes Cap and Nick Fury dies in combat. Obviously now the Avengers history will be completely different, BUT Rick Jones still becomes Bucky.

With pencils by George Tuska, inks by Russ Jones and Joe Sinnott and an amazing cover by Rick Hoberg, this book is not only one of the best 'What If' stories ever, but it ranks as my 5th favorite Captain America story!

Press Release

Top writers and artists will be joining Marvel Comics at New York Comic Con (NYCC) as the renowned comic books and media entertainment company reveals some of its preliminary plans for the 2012 edition of the annual pop culture convention. Marvel will once again have a 3000 square foot booth on the show floor where attendees will have ample room and opportunity to mingle with creators and staff including Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment, and Axel Alonso, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief. Other Spotlight Guests who will be on hand to greet fans will be Kieron Gillen, Jonathan Hickman, Rick Remender, Esad Ribic, Dan Slott and Steve McNiven. In addition to his appearance at the show, Steve McNiven has agreed to create this year’s official NYCC poster. This year’s New York Comic Con, which attracted over 100,000 fans last year, will take place October 11 – 14, 2012 at Manhattan's Javits Center. The extravaganza attracts top talent and major artists from all areas of the pop culture universe including comics, film, television, music, books, and gaming.

“One of our primary goals at New York Comic Con is to provide major companies like Marvel Entertainment with a venue to feature their top talent as well as a platform to launch and display new content and product,” notes Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for NYCC. “Marvel’s booth at New York Comic Con is always a hub of activity reflecting its role as a leader in the pop culture universe. I am certain this year will be no different. I look forward to making this year’s show busier than ever for Marvel and I know that thousands of fans will be eager to meet so many talented executives and creators. As always, I am grateful to Marvel for their continuing support of NYCC.”

AXEL ALONSO: A 17-year comics industry veteran, Axel Alonso got his start at DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, where he edited such seminal series such as Preacher, Hellblazer and 100 Bullets, before leaping to Marvel Comics in 2001. Since that time, he has overseen many of the publisher's biggest franchises – including Spider-Man, Hulk and the X-Men – and edited some of its most talked-about series – including Rawhide Kid and X-Statix. In 2011 Axel was promoted to Editor In Chief, a tenure during which he has overseen major events such as the Death of Ultimate Spider-Man and the chart-topping Avengers VS. X-Men. Besides comics, Alonso's passions include basketball, hip-hop, 8-year-old shooting guard Tito "Mr. T" Alonso, Asian food and preparing for the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse.

KIERON GILLEN: Kieron Gillen is a foul writing worm who crawls inside artists' ears and makes them do his bidding. Products of this evil symbiosis include Journey Into Mystery and the award-winning Phonogram. Last fall Kieron launched Uncanny X-Men #1 with Carlos Pacheco & Greg Land. There is no known cure.

JONATHAN HICKMAN: Jonathan Hickman is the award-winning writer and artist of critically acclaimed indie titles Pax Romana, Manhattan Projects, Secret and The Nightly News, a six-part comic series analyzing the powerful influence of the mainstream media on life in the 21st century. And while Jonathan's Marvel work includes stints on titles like Secret Warriors, Ultimate Thor and the Ultimates, he is probably best known for his extended run on Marvel's first family, The Fantastic Four. A graduate of Clemson University, Jonathan resides in South Carolina.

STEVE MCNIVEN: Steve McNiven has been working at Marvel comics for almost all of his professional career, drawing a wide range of characters including Spider-man, Wolverine and Captain America. He has collaborated with some of the best writers in the business, from Ed Brubaker on the 2011 relaunch of Captain America to Brian Bendis on New Avengers and Warren Ellis on Ultimate Secret. He has worked extensively with Mark Millar on numerous titles including the bestselling Marvel Civil War and Wolverine : Old Man Logan, which won him a 2009 Scream award for best comic book artist. He recently teamed up for another book with Mark Millar, this time a creator owned property titled Nemesis, published through Marvel's Icon imprint. He is currently under an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics working on a new project as well as prepping the second volume of Nemesis.

JOE QUESADA: Joe Quesada wears many creative hats, as both an acclaimed writer-artist and the Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment - the world's largest and most dynamic comics publisher. In this role, Joe is steward of such legendary characters as Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. His tenure as Editor-in-Chief recently drew to a close after 10 successful years – the longest term since Stan Lee himself. Under Quesada's guidance, Marvel underwent a creative boom and became home to the comic industry's greatest talents, which continues to hold true today. He brings this same vision to his role in the whole of Marvel Entertainment across the worlds of publishing, film, and television.

RICK REMENDER: Rick Remender is the writer/creator of comics such as Fear Agent, The End League, Strange Girl, Black Heart Billy, Last Days of American Crime, Sea of Red, Sorrow, Night Mary, XXXombies and Doll and Creature. He is also the writer of Marvel's Uncanny X-Force, Secret Avengers, and Venom. Outside of comics he has served as lead writer on EA/EPIC/PCF's Bulletstorm game and was a writer on the Electronic Arts hit game Dead Space . Prior to this, Remender served as an animator on films such as The Iron Giant, Anastasia, Titan A.E., and Rocky and Bullwinkle. During his time wrist grinding as an artist Rick penciled books such as The Last Christmas, Bruce Campbell's Man with the Screaming Brain and numerous issues of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while also inking books such as The Avengers and The Terminator . He has provided album covers and art for bands such as NOFX, 3 Inches of Blood, Lagwagon and No Use for a Name. He also taught storyboarding, animation and comic art at San Francisco's Academy of Art University for many years. He and his tea-sipping wife, Danni, currently reside in California with their two kids, and a monster known only as Lester Magoo.

ESAD RIBIC: Born 1972 in Zagreb, Croatia, Esad started his career in animation, eventually switching over to comics in early 90s. Esad started working internationally with horror comics for the German market. His first work in the US was with Antarctic Press Compan, eventually moving on to DC/Vertigo. He ended up at Marvel where he has worked happily for a decade now on books like Loki, Silver Surfer: Requiem, and The Ultimates. Ribic is also the current cover artist on Uncanny X-Force.

DAN SLOTT: Dan is someone who isn't comfortable typing up his own bio and/or talking about himself in the third person. That said, I hear he is extremely modest and would never mention the multiple times he swam the English Channel, piloted clandestine moon missions, or wrestled nuclear-powered mastodons. He is a riddle wrapped in an enigma... and then dipped in a tangy chipotle sauce. You might know him from his work as a writer on Amazing Spider-Man, Mighty Avengers, Avengers: The Initiative, She-Hulk, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, Batman Adventures, Looney Tunes, or Ren & Stimpy. Or if comics ain't your bag, he's the guy who wrote the Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions game for XBox 360, PS3, and PC.

The 2012 Inkwell Award Winners Announced

6/26/2012

Picture
Press Release

For the 5th season the Inkwell Awards conducted their anticipated, annual voting event with a live ballot at their website for two weeks from May 1 to May 15.  The non-profit advocacy is now able to release the ballot results from the five categories targeting the exceptional work of ink artists from 2011 as well as the two recipients of the sixth category, The Joe Sinnott hall of Fame Award. The award recipients were contacted in mid-May and some of the invited artists were able to make it to the Heroes Convention to be awarded their trophies at the second live ceremony at this venue.

For the FAVORITE INKER AWARD category, it was a tight race between Scott Williams (Justice League) and Mark Farmer (Captain America, X-Men: Schism) with Scott in the lead in the beginning and then the two of them going neck and neck until Mark Farmer pulled ahead with 38% of the votes, leaving Scott as close runner-up with 36%.

While at first a three-way race between Norm Rapmund, Jonathan Glapion and Scott Hanna, for the third consecutive year Scott Hanna pulled head and took home the MOST-ADAPTABLE AWARD for his prolific and chameleon-like inking and finishing work on various projects such as Avengers Academy, Avengers, REBELS, Herc, GL Corps, and Amazing Spider-man over the likes of pencilers Tom Raney, Sean Chen, Claude St. Aubin, Daniel HDR, Neil Edwards, Fernando Pasarin and Lee Garbett.  Scott ultimately took 38% of the votes (again) with Norm Rapmund (Booster Gold, brightest Day, Justice League of America, Teen Titans) in the runner-up position with 25%.

Marc Deering flew out of the gate with the PROPS AWARD category, reserved for an ink artist deserving of more attention, subsequently running nose to nose with Steve Leialoha with Scott Hanna slowly catching up. Then it was a competition between Scott and Steve with Dave Beaty suddenly coming out of no where for the third-place spot, pulling ahead of Marc.  In the end, Scott Hanna (Herc, Avengers Academy) took the PROPS AWARD (and his second 2012 win and fifth Inkwell trophy overall) with 19% in what was a crowded race between eleven nominees, repeating last year's scenario, with albeit a different winner. Steve Leialoha (Fables) held on to the runner-up spot with 18%.

For the S.P.A.M.I. AWARD (Small Press And Mainstream Independent) for ink work on non-DC or Marvel titles, Dexter Vines (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9) kept the lead all throughout the contest, although Todd McFarlane (Haunt, Spawn) trailed closely. The final photo-finish call was Dexter with the win with 32% of the votes, followed closely by Todd at 30% and a covert-op Gary Erskine (G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero) appearing out of nowhere with 30%, beating Todd by one vote for the runner-up slot.

J.H. Williams III (Batwoman) led the pack the entire ride for the ALL-IN-ONE AWARD, for those artists who ink their own pencil work with 22%.  Francis Manapul, who took the category last year for his work on Adventure Comics and Flash, pursued J.H. for the first half of the way, but he was eventually overtaken by Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman) as runner-up with 21% of the vote.

There was a trend-breaker in the JOE SINNOTT AWARD, a hall of fame designation for an inking career in American comic books of outstanding accomplishment (lifetime achievement, 25-years minimum- two winners chosen annually), named after the legendary Joe Sinnott himself.  Incidentally, every year there has been one winner with a longer career than the other more contemporary winner.  But this year both artists emerged from the 1980s and both have influenced many and led the way in ink art and, in fact, both had just recently become eligible for the award. This year the Inkwell Hall Of Fame welcomes two genuine modern masters – Scott Williams and Mark McKenna.

Mark McKenna entered the comic scene as an intern at Marvel Comics in the 1980s and became one of the legendary “Romita’s Raiders”, so named as the interns were guided and taught by John Romita.  From that point on Mark established himself as one of the most dependable inkers, working for virtually every comic book company and in doing so has worked on almost every major character at both Marvel and DC Comics.  In the 1990s he established a partnership with penciler Mike McKone, which, although their output is relatively small, is still looked upon as one of the finest of collaborations.  By his own estimate Mark has inked almost 8,000 pages throughout his career, both credited and uncredited, and has assisted many artists to break into the industry.  In recent times Mark has been working a creator owned title, Combat Jacks. The secret to Mark’s longevity is quality, speed and reliability and he shows no sign of slowing down.

Scott Williams entered the the comic book scene in the mid-80s and quickly gained attention as an inker over such pencil artists as Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and predominately Jim Lee.  After exceptional work together on Marvel's X-Men, both Lee and Williams subsequently transferred their collaboration over to the newly-formed Image Comics in 1992 where they launched titles such as Wild C.A.T.S. and Deathblow. Later successful projects included Heroes Reborn for Marvel, which saw them tackle the Fantastic Four.  Moving to DC Comics Williams continued his collaboration with Lee on Batman, Superman, and the recent The New 52 relaunch.  Scott, a modern master, has perhaps influenced more contemporary ink artists than anyone else due to his innovative inking style using exclusively quill as a tool.  Scott was not the first to do this, as fellow Sinnott Hall of Famer Terry Austin had used quill exclusively since the '70s, but his efforts to capture contrasting and clean line weight extremes created a style more unique than what was seen before.  Much like Terry Austin in the bronze-age, Scott Williams is one of the few ink artists today that has deservedly reached superstar status in
the industry.

Joe Sinnott made the following statement: "Another year has passed and there are yet two more great inkers to be honored in receiving the 2012 Inkwell Awards Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.  Congratulations go out to Mark McKenna and Scott Williams who are two equally deserving inkers, that will receive this award.  Many thanks to all the fans that voted for their favorite inkers. Good luck to next years nominees as I know there are many more deserving inkers that do a fine job embellishing the pencillers work and arriving at the finished product that we all get to see in print." Joltin' Joe Sinnott (class of 2008)

The results were officially announced at the Inkwell Awards 2nd live awards ceremony that took place at Heroes Con Saturday June 23.  Inkwell founder and director Bob Almond acted as host, artist Marc Deering acted as Presenter, Bob McLeod acted as the Keynote Speaker, and guest speakers like art rep/former committee member Bob Shaw presented the Hall of Fame award to Mark McKenna and artist/Inkwell contributor Dan Panosian presented the other HoF award to Scott Williams.  Retired committee members Nathan Massengill and Daniel Best (a founder) were awarded a silver inkwell trophy after two and four years on the committee, respectively. The spokesmodel and ceremony hostess Ms. Inkwell, portrayed by model Haley Greenleaf, and much of the organization, were in attendance, as well as the award recipients except Mark Farmer, J.H. Williams and Scott Williams who couldn't attend the show due to personal matters and scheduling conflicts.

For more info regarding the 2012 results such as winners’ acceptance speeches, voting percentages, nomination committee participants, and more, please keep checking the official Inkwell Awards website at http://www.inkwellawards.com.

'Electrolyte and the Justice Purveyors' # 1 is available as a FREE download on Amazon.com and issues 1 - 4 are for sale on iBooks, as well as for the Kindle and the Nook!

"This is huge news," Matman said jumping for joy! "This is one funny series and now everyone, no matter where you live can take a chance with a free download! Then when you get sucked in you'll see what I've been talking about!"

The first issue has made the top 20 for free comics on Amazon. Not bad at all considering it started out at number 144,250 last month.

"I'm doing pretty well with issue one 'cuz its free," series creator Patrick Reilly tells Secret Identity. "I'd like to keep the momentum up."

Here is the skinny about the series ....

Megalopolis is a virtually crime-free city. That's great for the citizens of Megalopolis, but not for its superheroes. Now superheroes must compete against each other for work and no one is more affected by this plight than The Justice Purveyors. Led by Electrolyte, The Justice Purveyors primary stock and trade has been chasing reckless jaywalkers, dealing with drunk and disorderlies, scofflaws and general cases of moral turpitude. To everyone's surprise The Justice Purveyors beat out the best superhero team in Megalopolis--The Perfect Four -- for a job with the multinational corporation, Wales International. What The Justice Purveyors don't realize is that Jack Wales, the CEO of Wales International, has more than a passing interest in Electrolyte's powers.

'After Watchmen'... Thoughts?

6/23/2012

Picture
by Matman

When DC announced the 'Before Watchmen', fans began to freak! Why? Many felt a sequel or even a prequel would tarnish the legacy of the original material.

I was not one of those!!! Considering the fact that I'm probably the only comic fan who didn't like the 'Watchmen', i don't have strong feeling either way.

I wasn't shocked at the backlash but i was at the stance that many people took. With a huge list of talent on board how could fans not count the days until its release? Of course Alan Moore wanted nothing to do with it. He didn't think it was right to do considering he didn't approve! Did he remember the fact that he created the 'Watchmen' series based on Charlton characters newly acquired by DC at the time? Do the fans?

Well I hope folks changed their 'moral stands' because if so then they are missing some incredible books featuring comics best creators!

Minutemen # 1 - As a writer Darwyn Cooke shows here he has a great understanding of the characters, as an artist he captures the feel of the golden age like no other! 5 out of 5!

Silk Spectre #1 - This is a touching story by Darwyn Cooke and incredibly drawn by Amanda Connor! This issue could easily have gone all 'Disney and drama filled', but it was a beautiful story! These two could write and draw a grocery list and make it perfect. 5 out of 5!

Comedian #1 - I was shocked at how much i loved this issue! With Brian Azzarello's ability to tell deep stories and J.G. Jones' realistic art, what would you expect? i didn't expect this... 5 out of 5!

So don't be such an idealist! No matter what you think of the books, it will never change the original 'Watchmen' and how you feel about it. But don't snap to a decision because everyone else is bagging on it and it seems like a cool thing to do, read and make up your mind for yourself!
