by Brian LeTendre

As if there weren't enough horror and heavy metal reasons to go to Rock and Shock this year, the latest announcement for the show makes it an absolute must-go.

Ray Santiago (Pablo) and Dana Delorenzo (Kelly) will be appearing at the show on Saturday October 15th, and they're bringing THREE episodes of Ash Vs. Evil Dead with them! That means you can see the second and third episodes of the show before anyone else even lays eyes on them! Ray and Dana will also be doing a Q&A session and signing as well.

Rock and Shock is happening October 14-16 at the DCU Center and Palladium in Worcester, MA. You can get all the info and grab your tickets at rockandshock.com.

A book that I am REAAAALLLLLLYYYYYYYY excited about - Matman

Critically-acclaimed writer Alex de Campi (NO MERCY, Grindhouse) teams up with artist Tony Parker (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, This Damned Band) and colorist Blond (Red Hood and the Outlaws, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) for the Cold War thriller MAYDAY, an all-new series launching this November from Image Comics.

It's 1971, and two young Soviet operatives are sent to California to kill a defector and recover top-secret information. As the mission dissolves into a mess of good sex, bad drugs, and ugly violence, the young Russians face a new problem: they’ll need to rely on each other to escape America, but to survive Russia they’ll have to betray each other.

“MAYDAY is a very fast-paced, violent, 5-issue miniseries with a lot of sex and drug use (hey, they always say "write what you know"). But it's also got that early-1970s thriller thing going,” said de Campi in an interview in Image+. “You can tell a lot about an era by its criminals.”

“It's not the ‘70s that most people envision,” said Parker in the same interview. “Most people picture the late ‘70s and the Disco era. This was a disillusioned, dark, distrusting, dirty, and angry time.”

Blond aptly summarized: “the band is back."

MAYDAY is a Cold-War action-thriller unlike any other. Get ready.

MAYDAY #1 Cover A by Tony Parker (Diamond code: SEP160631), as well as Cover B, also by Tony Parker (Diamond code: SEP160632), will hit comic book stores Wednesday, November 2nd. Final order cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, October 10th.

Fans of Art Baltazar and Franco can be happy again!  The duo are returning to DC in November for a limited series... the return of SUPER POWERS!

Can I get an 'Aw-Yeah'?

Batman is missing (presumed in space) and Superman sends Wonder Woman to go find him.  But with the Caped Crusader missing Gotham City becomes a free for all that only Superman can handle.

For those who know me, I have always been a HUGE fan of the creative duo. From PATRICK THE WOLF BOY to TINY TITANS to their creator owned AW YEAH COMICS featuring Action Cat, Art and Franco can do no wrong!

Hitting stores November 23, SUPER POWERS #1 will ship with three covers, one by Art, one by Franco and an blank one for someone to draw on...

Review: Flash #6 (DC)

9/24/2016

by Brian LeTendre

In the sixth issue of the Flash, we finally find out who Godspeed is, as the first arc comes to its near-climax.

I have really enjoyed Josh Williamson and Carmine De Giandomenico's take on Barry so far, and while the reveal was a bit predictable (I won't spoil it here), I also felt like it was earned.

I think it was a really smart move by the creative team to begin this new series with an arc that would be familiar to anyone watching the TV show. It's a simplified version of last season's TV storyline, and I actually think it works better than the show. The premise is the same--someone is killing speedsters and taking their speed. But instead of multiple earths, there is an event that gives ordinary people speed powers on Earth-1. Barry sees it as his personal responsibility to mentor and protect these new speedsters, so when they start dying at the hand s of Godspeed, finding out who the killer is becomes Barry's #1 priority.

So far this first arc has done a great job of balancing the home, work and superhero aspects of Barry's life, without any of them being given short shrift. Williamson and company are establishing a nice foundation with this arc, and I am really looking forward to seeing where things go from here.

The Pull List... Matman Style

Lat week's pull was a bit... flat!  But this week is one massive book after another! Here is what i picked up and can't wait to devour!!!

ALL STAR BATMAN #2 - Batman out of the city and every 'C' list nad guy is looking. Plus... Snyder and Romina, Jr.

SUPERWOMAN #2 - The only book better than this one is SUPERMAN. Phil Jimenez is writing and drawing a comic that I never expected to be this good.

ACTION COMICS #963 - A new arc begins now and promises to answer a few questions and ask a few more.

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #10 - The origin of Josie And The Pussycats within a zombie apocalypse and... well... it's a double sized issue that is guaranteed to entertain and freak out!

HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #4 - Hal is down for the count and Sinestro isn't letting up.

THE FLASH #6 - I will admit that i'm not quite feeling this version of the Flash, but because I love the character so much... I'll stick with it for a while.

DETECTIVE COMICS #940 - Batgirl's assembled team is on the run and the one that she trusted is the hunter.  This is an exceptional Bat Family title.

GLITTERBOMB #1 remains available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

Dan Dare Comes to Life!!!

Press Release

December sees the arrival of Dan Dare at Big Finish, courtesy of a new audio production from B7 Media starring Ed Stoppard as Dan Dare, Geoff McGivern as Digby, Heida Reed as Professor Peabody and Raad Rawi as the Mekon.

As Big Finish Managing Director Jason Haigh-Ellery explains:

“My first introduction to Dan Dare was at the age of nine through the pages of the legendary comic 2000AD. He was the pilot of the future and artist Bellardinelli brought to life a whole new world that I was previously unaware of. Dan Dare quickly became one of my favourite comic strips and I missed the character terribly when his adventures came in an end after two years of fighting the Mekon and the Star Slayers. Now I have the chance to be a kid again — as B7 Media and Big Finish Productions brings to life one of the UK greatest comic book heroes, but this time as full cast audio productions. I can’t wait!”

Big Finish Executive Producer Nicholas Briggs — who also has a role in the stories - adds: “We’re delighted to be releasing Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future on the Big Finish site. I’ve  been a massive fan of Dan Dare for years. The way B7 have reinvented it is spot on. They’ve lovingly nurtured the spirit of the original to create something new and exciting that still manages to stay thoroughly faithful to all the beauty of the original. I would have loved to have played the Mekon, so, rather fittingly, I got to play an alien who really wanted to be the Mekon!”

B7 Media Producer and Director Andrew Mark Sewell observes: “Ever since my father first introduced me to Dan Dare I’ve been captivated by his space adventures - so brilliantly realised by the creative genius that was Frank Hampson. It also ignited my fascination with mankind’s quest to journey beyond our blue planet and explore strange new alien worlds.  With the world of film and television drama now seemingly dominated by American comic book heroes, Dan Dare has always stood out as the definitive ‘British’ comic book space hero — a bright light of optimism that captured the hearts and imagination of a generation. The opportunity to realise Dan Dare for audio, and to partner once more with Big Finish, was an opportunity too great to turn down. Audio is unquestionably the perfect home to deliver truly epic Dan Dare audio adventures that are the embodiment its comic book inspiration.”

The first volume, containing three stories (Voyage to Venus, The Red Moon Mystery & Marooned on Mercury) and a disc of extras is out in December 2016, followed in February 2017 by a second volume containing Reign of the Robots, Operation Saturn and Prisoners of Space along with another bonus disc.

The normal pre-order price will be £20 on Download and £25 on CD (unlocking an instant download on release), but in a Dan Dare Day offer on 12th September, for the following 24 hours, each release can be pre-ordered instead for £15 and £20 respectively. This offer ends at mid-day on Tuesday (UK time) — and the clock’s  ticking!

• Pre-order the new Dan Dare Audio Adventures here on www.bigfinish.com
• Listen to the latest Big Finish podcast, which includes Dan Dare Audio Adventures interviews with Ed Stoppard (Dan Dare), Geoff McGivern (Digby) and Raad Rawi (The Mekon) - plus clips!
