I know we aren't
even out of 2014
yet, but we have
just found out about
a comic show
happening in
Connecticut... in....
wait for it... JANUARY!

Sure you may have
to worry about weather, but living in New England you always have to worry. A few years back ComiConn happened to be the same weekend of a hurricane, so up here you never know!

Welcome to YOUR MINICON taking place January 16 - 18, 2015 at the Four Points by Sheraton, 275 Research Pkwy - Meriden, CT 06450

Although no guests have been announced yet I can let a few cats out of the bag, Secret Identity will be there as will 'KISS Forever' who will be playing a show that evening!

For vendor information just go to the site at www.yourminicon.com.

Matman Comic Con Soapbox Rant!

9/25/2014

Picture
by Matman

Lately social media
has blown up with
comments about
comic cons! From
longtime creators seeing
a shift in sales,
cosplay controversy and
the overall etiquette at a con.

Now there is too much to cover for one column or even a two hour road trip but I do wanna point out some of my observations that may shed some light on things.

The biggest thing I have noticed over the past 10 years is that 'geek' has become cool. If you look at a show demographic; age, social and financial levels,
it looks like any mall or high school hall. And with it sadly comes the crap that goes with it like peer pressures, bulling and sexual harassment. At one time we could go to a con and be with only our 'own kind', now our kind is everyone. The good and the bad. Like in school (and I hope at home) young adults are taught how to deal with these sort of situations and the proper steps to avoid them or get help when a problem arises. Posting on Facebook when something happens instead of going to someone in authority is not how to handle it.

Remember it is YOUR con too and you have every right to enjoy it free of stupidity. If someone is hindering you from enjoying it... get help!

As far as spending money I hear a lot of complaints from vendors and creators that people just aren't spending the money they used to. I think that is just the way the world is right now. I don't spend as much money at a show as I used to and I tend to wanna support the vendors giving huge deals and the local creator who has an interesting book to push. I always hear the 'cosplayers don't spend any money' and that may be true to an extent. I know many go just to have fun as their character of choice but I will say this on a selling point... I have sold more books to Doctor Who cosplayers that 'average joe' fan.

And something I never thought i'd ever say... but there are becoming far too many shows
! I don't mean Boston, New York, Vermont and Rhode Island shouldn't all have shows but last year we had THREE in Connecticut within two months of each other. That hurts. I may go to all three but my spending will be much less.

WHY DOES NO ONE DO A MARCH OR APRIL SHOW? I know weather concerns but isn't summer hurricane season?

Just some thoughts I know I'll revisit soon...

Review--Cloaks #1 (BOOM!)

9/24/2014

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

In Caleb Monroe and Mariano Navarro’s Cloaks, main character Adam D’Aquino is a modern day Robin Hood--a street-level magician that steals from the rich and gives to the poor. He’s a young man with a bit of mystery in his past, and that mystery comes full circle by the end of the first issue.

This first installment of Cloaks almost felt like a television pilot to me. Monroe’s story covers a lot of ground, running from scene to scene as we get introduced to the main cast and see snippets of Adam’s past. Navarro’s art (with colors by Gabriel Cassata) is light and expressive, lending to the brisk pace of the story in this issue.

Cloaks #1 is a solid setup issue for the rest of the series and does what a good pilot should do--leave you wanting more.

Meet Don Mathias And Peanizles

9/23/2014

Picture
by Matman

I first met creator Don Mathias at Boston Comic Con 2014. He was right across from Stan Sakai and was owner of the golden ticket 'Sakai Project' book and after speaking to everyone... he was the ONLY one! By the way Don, thanks for hooking me up!

Don is an illustrator and writer from the beautiful town of Andover, MA (complete with a Planet Fitness) and has been featured in comics, newspapers and magazines! But what has been getting him a lot of attention lately is the Whovian influence his web-strip PEANIZLES
has taken lately.

PEANIZLES is a strip (updated Monday, Wednesday and Friday) about some kids, probably not much different than you and the kids you hung out with! They are sarcastic and wisecracking and well.... pretty funny!

But over the past few weeks the strip has been spending time in the world of Doctor Who and because of that, PEANIZLES has been featured on, and been a huge hit on the Boston Whovians Facebook page; a page with almost 1,700 members... including Don and myself!

So check out the site at
http://www.peanizles.com/ and get ready to laugh and then go "no wait.. that isn't funny. it's me!"

Press Release

Wicked Comics are proud to announce that creator owned comics king Jason Howard (The Astounding Wolf-Man), legendary editor, writer and letterer Richard Starkings (Elephantmen), creator and Grand Wizard Tim Perkins (Worlds End Vol 1 – The Riders on the Storm) as well as fan favourite creator and comic activist Sean Azzopardi (Necessary Monsters) will be joining Yishan Li, Rufus Dayglo, Andrew Wildman, Guillermo Ortego, Steve Scott, Mickey Lam, Mike Collins, Cliodhna, Dave Taylor, Christian Ward, John-Paul Kamath, Michael Dialynas, Lew Stringer, Daniela “Iella” Attard, Mario Alberti, Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby as guests for the Malta Comic Con (MCC) 2014 which will be held on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November at St. James Cavalier (all floors), Valletta, between 10am – 6pm on Saturday and 11am – 7pm on Sunday.

“I met Jason Howard during New York Comic Con 2012 and he’s a great guy on top of an excellent creator. We’re delighted that he has accepted our invitation and are certain that he’ll fit in well with the family spirit prevalent at the Malta Comic Con. Richard Starkings influence on the industry is such that any convention organiser would be delighted to have him on his guest list. Consequently, we’re excited to welcome him to Malta and look forward to his contribution towards our show. Tim Perkins and Sean Azzopardi were amongst the guests present at the first Malta Comic Convention. They believed in us from the off-set and in addition to their presence in each successive show they continue to provide invaluable input to help us develop further the Maltese comic scene and our convention. Simply put the Malta Comic Con wouldn’t be the same without them. The presence of these fine creators as well as that of the other guests has us all enthusiastically looking forward to the Malta Comic Con 2014 and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their participation and look forward to hosting them here” said Chris Le Galle co-founder of Wicked Comics.

“The organisers have set a precedent for all other conventions on how to make the guests and visitors totally welcome and at home.

The choice of venue, a medieval fortress is superb and is, by far, the best locale I have ever seen a comic convention held within and the atmosphere created by the organisers is second to none.

The organisers obviously love Malta and this can be seen by the promotion of the country, its culture, history, cuisine and its landmarks through their tours and enthusiastic explanations as one spends time with them.

The inclusive nature they nurture through the involvement of children and young adults in the school workshops is perfect for a growing art form and in turn future industry in Malta.

They are a credit to the country and to the medium of comics”. (Tim Perkins, 2012)
