This Week Begins DC Villain's Month!

8/31/2013

Get ready for the bad guys!!!  Starting this week (Tuesday September 4th), the bad guys and gals in the DCU get the spotlight...all 52 of them.

All regular DC titles will be put on hold as the villains get the spotlight in each issue. But if you are a completest and don't get an issue, you won't be missing an issue. Each 'bad book' will have a .1 (or.2 or even .3) numbering. Not all books in the New 52 will have a villain book (like All Star Western) and some (like Batman) will have multiple copies this month featuring a different villain.

These books are part of the Geoff Johns / David Finch 7 issue series 'Forever Evil' that will tell the main story in this... the first full universe crossover within the New 52. This series will focus on the formation of the (get ready) Secret Society Of Super - Villains!

As an added incentive to get these books is the stunning lenticular 3-D covers. These covers will look amazing on the store shelves unless they are already sold out by the time you get there. And if that ends up being the case, DC has announced non lenticular covers to be ready in case of sell out.

The Ballad Of G.I. Joe

8/31/2013

I have no idea how I missed this before, but as I was perusing Funny or Die this morning, I came across this little ditty that's an ode to G.I. Joe. It's a start-studded music video featuring Zack Galifianakis, Tony Hale, Julianne Moore and a bunch of other well-known faces. Thought I'd share it--Brian

Thank You ComiCONN

Brian and I would like to take this time and thank everyone at ComiCONN for such a great show last weekend!

The venue (Mariott Hotel in Trumbull) is a beautiful place but I think the show may have outgrown the space. There was a bit of confusion to where people were located because creators were spread around within a few different rooms as well as an outside area called the Power Patio. This was an incredibly cool place to be, but if you didn't know where it was, you would have missed out some cool stuff and Flash actor John Wesley Shipp (picture above)!

But the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. The guest list was a great mix of big names, industry legends and indy creators. All the creators were accessible and the list was full of talented people who were also great human beings. This is a huge plus for attendees (and interviewers alike).

So lets talk vendors! This was a great mix of toys, dvd's, and comics priced in the high end or as little as 25 cents!  Both Brian and I took advantage of the cheap book and bought more than we will ever get thru in this lifetime.

We got some great interviews that we can't wait to share with y'all and had a wonderful time hanging out with friends.

For the past four years, ComiCONN has grown bigger and better. The staff has brought it from a small local show to a can't miss con that is heavy on the FAMILY and heavy on the fun!

Artists Celebrate Jack Kirby's Birthday With 'Wake Up And Draw'

8/29/2013

Picture
In honor of comic legend Jack Kirby's 96th birthday yesterday, 100 artists that were recruited by The Hero Initiative participated in 'Wake Up and Draw,' posting their homages to Kirby on Twitter under the hashtag #WakeUpAndDraw.

There were some amazing entries, like our pal Chris Giarrusso's that we re-posted here, but you should hit the link above and check them all out for yourself, as other artists outside of the Hero Initiative recruits posted as well. The Hero Initiative has also created a gallery on Comic Art Fans where the Hero Initiative pieces will be displayed.

The pieces will eventually be auctioned off to raise money to help comic creators through the Hero Initiative. You can check out the trailer Tim Seely participated in for the event below.

Kids Want, Need and Love Comics!

8/28/2013

One of the biggest things Brian and I noticed at last weekend at ComiCONN and Bing Con was the amount of kids that were in attendance at both shows. Sure some probably got dragged there by their collector parents, but so many more were wearing the costumes of their favorite hero. But are they reading the comics of these characters?

Sadly, most of the books out there (Wolverine, Flash, Batman) are inappropriate for younger readers. Even if the books are alright to read, they may be so deep in story or continuity, a casual reader will get nothing out of it but confused.

So what is the problem here? There is an obvious market for kid friendly comics so why not give them what they want? 'Marvel Adventure' line and 'Johnny DC' were great ideas but where are those amazing books now?

Our good friend Joe Caramagna is now involved with Marvel's line of all ages books including 'Hulk Agent Of SMASH' and a new all ages Avengers book coming soon.

We are getting sick of pushing this guy because he shouldn't need us to do so because he is so talented. Chris Giarrusso's amazing G-Man and his website www.chrisgcomics.com is everything good about comic books and art.

If Art Baltazar and Franco's new project 'Aw Yeah Comics' isn't a huge success I will give up comics. Anything these two guys do is not only charming but incredibly fun to read. Look for Little Hellboy coming soon.

Need a little of that Saz Magic? Writer John Sazaklis has written some of the best all ages books out there including 'I Can Read' and 'DC Super Pets' books. Even if you are above the recommended age, John writes some great stuff. http://sazmagic.blogspot.com/

So there you are! Lets try to show the kids that is great to dress like the great heroes, fun to watch them in movies and TV... but is even better to read their adventures!

I don't know  about you guys, but I absolutely love the LEGO games. From the original LEGO Star Wars to the new LEGO City Undercover, the games are a blast to play with my kids or by myslef, and they've featured some of my favorite properties.

Without a doubt though, the upcoming LEGO Marvel Super Heroes game has me more excited than any that have come before. I was a Marvel kid growing up, my favorite hero is Spidey, and I love just about every aspect of the Marvel U.

The latest trailer for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes debuted at Gamescom last week, and it looks amazing. October 18th can't come fast enough. Check it out below.

PRESS RELEASE

Top tier comic retailers Discount Comic Book Service and Things from Another World have joined the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund as corporate members, the organization announced this week.  They are the first retailers to join at that level since the organization’s founding in 1986, a landmark that reflects the increasing scale of North America’s largest comic retailers.  Both companies have both brick and mortar and e-commerce operations.

Both TFAW and DCBS will also initiate new on-going fundraising efforts via a series of exclusive variants.

The membership and ongoing fundraising build on the companies’ past support of the CBLDF.  TFAW has helped raise over $100,000 for the Fund by soliciting artwork for the annual San Diego Comic-Con auction for the past five years; and DCBS has distributed thousands of pieces of literature on behalf of the Fund since 2010.

TFAW CEO (and CBLDF Advisory Board Member) Mike Richardson emphasized his company’s long-time support of the CBLDF.  "As a longtime friend of the CBLDF and their efforts protecting the First Amendment rights of publishers, creators, retailers, and the comics community as a whole, I can think of no organization more deserving of our support," he said.

DCBS co-owner Christina Merkler expressed her support for the Fund.  "We are very excited to fully support the CBLDF in all of their work," she said.

Co-owner Cameron Merkler noted the importance of the higher level of support.  "All retailers understand the importance of the work done by the CBLDF, and as an ongoing supporter of the CBLDF, we felt it was time to make the maximum commitment possible," he said.

Review--Dial H #15 (DC)

8/23/2013

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

After reading the oversized final issue of Dial H, I had two thoughts--I was bummed to see the series go after only sixteen issues, but I’m amazed it lasted this long.

Not because of the quality, mind you. Dial H was consistently one of the most well-written and wonderfully drawn series of the past several years. But it was also dense, complicated, and at times brain-breaking. China Mieville’s story of inter-dimensional superpower-swapping heroes and villains could make some of Grant Morrison’s trippier work seem straightforward and simple.

And the finale is no exception. There is so much story being told in this issue, that even the extra pages are not enough to hold it. While Mieville does an admirable job of trying to answer most of the series’ questions, this issue feels still like six rolled into one. I’ve read it three times already and I’ll still don’t understand everything that happened. I did enjoy every page of it though, and Mieville squeezes every bit out of the pages he has.

Even though I couldn’t keep up with Mieville, artist Alberto Ponticelli had no problems whatsoever. As he has since he came aboard mid-series, Ponticelli handles all the action, the crazy characters and the mind-blowing concepts with ease. I truly believe his run on this book will go down as one of the greats.

It’s an understatement to say that Dial H was cancelled before its time. The great thing about this series is that it will be reread and examined for years to come, and I fully expect it to do well in trades as more people discover what they missed the first time around.

If you haven’t read Dial H, go grab the first trade right now and see what you’ve been missing.
