Why I Love This!!!!

2/23/2016

Picture
by Matman

A few weeks back on THE FLASH, Barry Allen, Cisco and Dr. Wells traveled from Earth 1 to Earth 2 through a swirling portal. Now as awesome as it was... it gets better!  As they traveled inside, pictures began to swirl around, showing people, places and things in the TV DCU.

Three of the images really got me fired up...

1. Supergirl - because I love the show and think its the perfect complement to The Flash.

2. Legion Flight Ring - holy crapper!!!! just holly crapper!!!!

But by far the image that got me fired up so much was the one of my 'man'...  3. Jonah Hex!!!

I can't believe of all the characters in the DCU they showed him. What does that mean? I dunno!  What do I hope it means is a Netflix series and a return to comics.

What I hope it will do is bring awareness to the character as we wait for his DC LEGENDS OF TOMORROW appearance to show what an amazing and underrated dude Jonah Hex is

Go BACK TO THE GUTTERS and Get to Know Some Comic Creators

2/21/2016

by Brian LeTendre

I'm a big fan of Jamie S. Rich. He's currently the Senior Editor over at Vertigo, but I first met him when I interviewed him about his book Madame Frankenstein and the excellent Archer Coe and the Thousand Natural Shocks. He couldn't have been nicer, and I was psyched to see him get the gig at Vertigo.

That gig actually meant that Jamie couldn't continue hosting this new webseries "Back to the Gutters," which is a shame, because it's pretty great. The show features in-depth interviews with comic creators. The series will air weekly over February and March, and the first episode hit this week--you can watch it above.

You can head to backtothegutters.com to get more information and to watch all the episodes. Here's more from the press release:

Comics writer and Vertigo Senior Editor Jamie S. Rich and producer/director Ryan McCluskey are reteaming for a new comics-interview webseries -- and this time they're joined by Benjamin Dewey.

"Back to the Gutters" launches Friday, Feb. 17th at http://backtothegutters.com , with Rich interviewing comics artist Dewey (AUTUMNLANDS: TOOTH & CLAW, "The Tragedy Series").  The next nine 20-minute episodes will debut weekly -- released every Friday through February and March.

New video interviews already shot for the season include:

• Joelle Jones (LADY KILLER, SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN)
• Sierra Hahn (Editor, Boom Studios)
• Jeff Parker (AQUAMAN, BATMAN '66)
• Ibrahim Moustafa (HIGH CRIMES)
• Robbi Rodriguez (SPIDER-GWEN)
• Randy Bowen (Bowen Designs)
• Emi Lennox (PLUTONA, EMITOWN)
• Steve Lieber ( THE FIX,WHITEOUT)
• and Jamie S Rich ... interviewed by his frequent collaborator Joelle Jones.

"Our intent with 'Back the Gutters' is to peel back the page a bit and show you the creators behind your favorite comics -- both as artists and as people," said Rich. "We're going to dig down to uncover the motivations behind choosing comics as a profession, and the personalities that bring these stories to life, so that we can start to see the art and the artist as a singular unit."

Behind-the-camera personnel include Jason Hickox (camera/editing) and Grant Petersen (sound).

Rich's hire mid-shoot as a Senior Editor at Vertigo required the team to recruit a new host mid-stream. "We started out interviewing Ben, who is just a terrific talent," McCluskey said, "and the last three shows are hosted by Ben -- because we lost Jamie to Vertigo in the middle of shooting."

Each "Back to the Gutters" episode is 20 minutes long, but there's a wealth of cutting-room floor material that may get released down the line. "For Randy Bowen alone, we had nearly five hours in the rough edit," said Hickox, who shot and edited the webseries. "Getting that interview down to 20 minutes was painful -- but what you're left with is a great peek into his process. The same holds true for all of our guests. They're a great mix of veterans and up-and-comers."

Enjoying Some Old Comic Gold!

2/17/2016

Picture
by Matman

When I was a young reader I was instantly hooked into comic books because both my father and grandfather collected. One of the books that both of them enjoyed was BORIS KARLOFF'S TALES OF MYSTERY, from Gold Key.  For me this was a great series to read because it was scary stuff... but it wasn't horrifying or the stuff of nightmares. For me this was as scary as I would read!

TALES OF MYSTERY was an anthology series that debuted in April 1963 and lasted until February of 1980. Published by Gold Key (and later reprinted by Whitman) and was born out of the serieS BORIS KARLOFF THRILLER, the comics were a big seller for the publisher that was publishing everything at the time. The series wasn't written by karloff, but he appeared at the beginning and end of each to story to set up and then deliver the closing remarks.

At the time Boris Karloff was a big name in films, appearing in hundreds of films including FRANKENSTEIN as the monster, so naturally his 'image' fit perfectly as the framing device for these comics. I remember (and still have) many of my father and grandpa's originals as well as the Whitman reprints I would later pick up (like # 67 shown above, my first) and am finishing a pile i picked up in a (GASP) 50 cent bin!

These books are incredible reads and showcase some incredible art and amazing stories and were the blueprints for later horror comics like HOUSE OF MYSTERY and UNEXPECTED!

These stories have been reprinted in collections from Dark Horse books and can be found at your local comic shop... or Amazon!

Review--Deadpool (2016)

2/17/2016

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

By the time I saw Deadpool on Monday, the news of its record-shattering weekend was already well-documented. It's the highest-grossing debut of an R-rated movie, it destroyed Valentine's Day records, and it's already made almost five times its budget back in about four days. So, Deadpool is a success. But is it any good?

It's actually really good, but probably not for the reasons you think. Sure, Deadpool is funny, and there is plenty of violence, profanity and nudity to justify that R rating. But the three reasons I loved Deadpool were the characters, the love story and the small-budget filmmaking skills displayed by Director Tim Miller.
Picture
Let's take the characters first. We all know Deadpool is the character Ryan Reynolds was born to play, and he absolutely does not disappoint in this movie. He is Deadpool.

But you know who else freaking rocks? Colossus. Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Angel Dust. And Vanessa, played by Firefly alum Morena Baccarin. They're all fantastic, but Colossus and Vanessa stand out as really great characters.

Which brings me to the love story. Baccarin's Vanessa is the perfect match for Reynolds' Wade Wilson, and the love story at the core of this movie is one that you'll actually care about. It's not doing anything mind-blowing, but the chemistry that Reynolds and Baccarin have is fantastic, and it sells the story.

Which is a good thing, because the story in this movie is paper-thin. The more I thought about it, the more I admired how Director Tim Miller and writers Rhet Reese and Paul Wernick did so much with so little. There are only a handful of locations in this movie, and the story could not possibly be any simpler. But the way that tell that story, and the actors they're telling it with, make Deadpool feel a lot bigger than it actually is.

This movie reminded me of everything I loved about Punisher: War Zone. It never forgets that it's a comic book movie, and it tells a good story without having to pretend the universe is at stake.
