Justice League # 1 Ushers In The New 52!

8/31/2011

by Matman

The New 52 begins here and now!

It’s pretty cool to be at the beginning of a new universe, although the participants are more than familiar to us. Imagine, this must have been what it was like to be there at the dawn of the Marvel Universe or the Silver Age DCU! A few years back, Marvel attempted this with Heroes Reborn and to be honest, that series got me into reading Marvel books I never read in the past. But an entire comic line?

When you open the pages, the first thing you notice is Jim Lee’s incredible pencils and Scott Williams’ inks holding it all together. As you begin to read the story unfolds, you realize what is going on! We are very early on into a ‘Year One’ as superheroes begin to meet for the first time. We are witness to the first meeting of Batman and Green Lantern and later on… Superman!

As you read the story you’ll see why Geoff Johns was picked to chronicle this series. He is not only a master storyteller, but incredible at building relationships and setting up situations for big payoffs! Seeing the first meeting of a much younger Batman and Green Lantern is pretty cool to watch play out. And to see Batman challenge Green Lantern and even (gotta save some spoilers) was pretty amazing! No matter how much things are different, some things remain the same.

Now of course the focus on this book will be the relaunch its build around and the new look costumes and if that is all you’re looking for than you will be disappointed! This book should be judged on its contents and nothing more. I could easily fall in the ‘all star creators won’t stay on this book for long’ trap but I want to judge it and enjoy it for what it is, and that is a great comic book!

I loved everything about this book! I felt a freshness and excitement within the pages that I haven’t felt in a long time! This is day one DC fans… embrace and enjoy it for what it is… a near perfect book!

Review--X-Baseball (iPhone/iPod/iPad)

8/30/2011

Picture
From developer XLARGE comes this simple but completely addictive baseball game. This game looks like an NES-era baseball game, and features a batter, catcher, pitcher and crowd. The gameplay is really simple, as your job is to hit pitches thrown to you before you strike out. Based on how far you hit the ball, you earn points, and the goal is to get as high a core as possible. You can also hit birds to earn extra points, and sometimes bunches of bananas will be thrown from the crowd that you can smash to erase one of your strikes. When you get three strikes, your’re done, so each game ends up only being a few minutes. It’s completely addictive through, as you’ll contstantly be trying to better your last score.

X-Baseball is completely free on the iTunes store, and I highly recommend you grab it immediately.

The Force Among Us... The Review!

8/29/2011

Picture
For many of us, Star Wars holds a special place for us. For me it was my bridge into a new school (and new state) when I moved in 1977. It went to a whole new level that to this day, is still a big part of me.

The same can be said for Chris Macht who took his passion for Star Wars to a whole new level. His testimony is ‘The Force Among Us’! This amazing documentary is a love letter to Star Wars fans the world over that only another Star Wars fan could have made!

In this DVD (limited to 1,977 and only about 20 left) you will see and meet fans and take an incredible trip to Tunisia and Norway to see where Tatooine and Hoth came to life. Here you’ll witness different levels of fandom, some extreme and some not so much. You’ll discover some very successful and intelligent people and some incredible insight from Dick Staub, author of a favorite book of mine ‘Christian Wisdom of The Jedi Masters’.

Saturday at ComiCONN I got to meet Chris (who along with his sister Cortney put this film together), picked up a copy of ‘The Force Among Us’ and got a chance to interview him. What I found was an intelligent and well spoken guy who used his skills and abilities to deliver a great film that sums up for many of us what Star Wars meant and still means to us.

If you ever find yourself defending your love of Star Wars, just show them ‘The Force Among Us’. This should reinforce the value of the story of a boy, a girl and a galaxy!

Matman Rating – 5 out of 5 reasons why Star Wars is better than Star Trek!

To get one of the final copies, and a vile of actual sand from Tatooine just go to

Scott Weinstein Brings Us A Tale Of The Perhapanauts!

8/26/2011

Picture
Our good friend Scott Weinstein, the man behind the excellent After-School Agent, has been moonlighting with The Perhapanauts!

For those that aren't familiar, The Perhapanauts are the creation of Todd Dezago (Sensational Spider-Man, Impulse) and Craig Rousseau (Impulse, Iron Man and the Armor Wars). Here's how they describe the series on their website:

There are places in this world where the fabric of reality has worn thin, where strange and terrible creatures have crossed over to lurk in the shadows and the night.

There is an organization dedicated to finding these creatures and sending them back whence they came, sealing the rift behind them, and maintaining the integrity of those borders.

The organization is called BEDLAM. Its agents are...The PERHAPANAUTS!

Our friend Scott has been writing an Elseworlds-style Perhapanauts story for a new project called Tales of the Perhapanauts. Scott's story has the gang appearing in a some prime time television shows like 30 Rock, Lost, SNL and others. The story has been getting posted page by page, each Friday for free at http://tales.perhapanauts.com. You can read Scott's story so far and catch up on previous tales there as well.

So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!!

ComiCONN Welcomes Billy Tucci

8/23/2011

Picture
With ComicCONN (www.ComicCONN.com) just a few days away, we feel the need to spotlight yet another awesome guest… the legendary Billy Tucci!

For a guy that has sold over 4 million creator owned comics, Billy is as down to earth as they come! His talent can be seen in the pages of his self titled Shi, Marvel’s Heroes For Hire and DC’s Sgt. Rock but at the con table is where you meet a true professional.

“I’ve known Billy for an awful long time,” Matman remembered, “and even before Secret Identity he was always a great guy to hang out with! He’s genuine and loves his fans and enjoys making new ones!”

Another thing you’ll find out after just a few minutes of talking with him is he is a true patriot that waves flags for our service men and women even when no one is looking. His incredible Sgt. Rock mini series is full of painstaking accuracies and incredible storytelling that was done as a labor of love.

“How much did he get into this project,” adds Matman? “I remember getting pictures from him of the beaches of Normandy and the forests of Belgium with all these notes as he was plotting the story.”

Billy will be at ComiCONN this weekend in Stamford, CT. with goodies like sketches, prints as well as some SHI and Sgt. Rock books for sale. Or just stop by and say hello!
