Helping Stan and Sharon Sakai

11/29/2013

Picture
by Matman

Anyone who knows or follows creator Stan Sakai is aware of the medical problems that his wife Sharon has endured over the past six months. Despite the fact that she is feeling a bit better and not in the hospital, Sharon's medical bills and her current need for care cost more than their insurance covers.

For those who know me know that I am a huge Stan Sakai fan! His 'Usagi Yojimbo' is one of my favorite characters and Stan is the one creator that I was actually nervous around, so if he hurts, so do I and I want to help! The second biggest thrill of my 'comic media' life was being asked to moderate the Stan Sakai panel at Boston Comic Con a few years back. The first was actually hosting it!

The
Cartoon Art Professional Society or CAPS is doing something amazing!

Please check the link and see how you can help Stan and Sharon get through this difficult time.

Review-Painkiller Jane: The Price Of Freedom #1 (Icon)

11/28/2013

Picture
by Brian LeTendre

I’ve been a fan of Painkiller Jane since the 2006 limited series that was published through Dynamite. While she was created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada in the mid-1990s.

For me, the character and the series has always been one part Punisher, one part Wolverine and one part The Shield. Jane, with her super healing factor, works with her detective friend Maureen to do the work that the cops aren’t willing to or can’t do themselves. Maureen feeds Jane the jobs, and Jane takes care of business. The concept is pretty simple, but as usual, it’s Palmiotti’s great characterization, pacing and dialogue that make Jane stand out from other characters that came from that era of comics.

This new series at Icon is a great jumping on point, for a few reasons., First, the story in issue one introduces you to the major players and sets up a clear, action-packed storyline. Juan Santacruz and Paul Mounts handle both the action and the quieter moments with ease, and their style matches Palmiotti’s perfectly.

My favorite thing about the issue are the extras, though. Not only do you get a backup story (with art by Sam Lofti) that provides some history for Jane and Maureen, but you get a great welcome back letter from Jimmy as well as a history of the character in print from Patrick Wedge.

All in all, this comic is well worth the $3.99 cover price, and offers a great introduction for those who are new to the character. Those already familiar with Jane will be happy to see her back in action, picking up right where she left off.

4.5 out of 5 Welcome Backs

Geeky Jersey Takes It To The Tardis!

11/27/2013

As most of you know, Brian and I love our hockey; the game, the teams and of course, the jerseys. In fact Brian and I can usually be seen at a comic show (in the fall / winter months) wearing a hockey jersey. So what if you combines a cool hockey jersey with the geekiest stuff like Star Wars, horror movies, video games and Doctor Who?

Geeky Jerseys (www.geekyjerseys.com) is the coolest place where clothing meets geek style! There is something cool about hockey jerseys and something even cooler about a custom made jerseys that bring to life the stuff we love. So if you are rocking the sandy colored Tusken Raiders # 77 (the year Star Wars came out), the green 'Army of Darkness' Boomstick # 92 or the Pokemon # 24 (no idea why 24. The Pokedex lists the not so popular Arbok)

So check out the website and make your order! I'm looking at the Doctor Who TARRDIS jersey customized with MATMAN # 9 on the back? Why number nine? It's my number!
Plus, how cool would I look writing my Doctor Who book wearing this crazy cool jersey?

Fifty years ago today, the first episode of Doctor Who appeared on the BBC.  In 1963, four million viewers witnessed the birth of what would become one of the longest and most beloved TV series of all time.

"An Unearthly Child" introduced William Hartnell as the First Doctor, his time traveling TARDIS, and his desire for companionship. Here is a paragraph from my upcoming book "The Unofficial Doctor Who Companion" to set the mood...

"The world was not a very happy or stable place in the autumn of 1963!  Some thirteen months before, American President John Fitzgerald Kennedy stood up to the Soviet Union and Communism on the world stage during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  During October of 1962, the Irish / Catholic president became a symbol of freedom by almost single handedly averted a world ending nuclear holocaust.  Sadly President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on the 22nd of November in 1963.  Due to his immense popularity, charm and appeal, this tragic event had an impact felt all over the world, especially in the United Kingdom where JFK and his wife Jacqueline was a beloved figure.  The following day television history was made in the UK, but not too many people felt like doing anything let alone watching the ‘telly’.  Still, on Saturday, November 23rd at 5:15 PM, four million plus viewers got their introduction to the incredible and amazing world of Doctor Who."

So are you ready for
the 50th Annaversary episode, "The Day Of The Doctor" that is happening tonight? It will air on BBC America in the states so check your guide for times and channel.

Get ready folks! It all changes after tonight!

Action Lab Entertainment, the company taking the comics industry by storm returns to it’s roots. Fracture, a series that began as a successful Kickstarter campaign and launch pad for the company itself returns in an all-new miniseries. Created by writer Shawn Gabborin (Snowed in, Angry Gnome Comics) and artist Chad Cicconi (NFL Rush Zone, Baby Boomers), Fracture Volume 2 is a follow up to the critically acclaimed story of  Superheroes, Supervillians and multiple personalities.

The City of Lower Triton is a city of heroes with the highflying Virtue first and foremost among them. However, for every hero there must be a villain and Malice, the technological terror, reigns supreme. But what happens when a normal guy named Jeff discovers he’s both?

Now, Jeff tries to move on with his normal, humdrum life, leaving the newly cloned Virtue, with his personality in place to become a full time hero. Virtue tries to protect Lower Triton while Jeff tries to keep his Malice personality at bay, which isn’t easy when he can’t get the drugs he needs! But life in Lower Triton is not normal by a long shot. Who is the newest villain on the scene, Vice? Who are the Croc men? And just how fractured is Jeff’s mind?

All of these answers and more can be found in the pages of Fracture, Volume 2 issue 1, featuring a variant cover by Molly Danger creator Jamal Igle.

Fracture #1 hits shelves on December 18th at comic shops everywhere.

11/20/2013

Picture
by Matman

Fans of Serenity and Firefly are constantly crying for more.  After all, one season of shows and a full length movie were not enough!

Thanks to Dark Horse, fans are getting a chance to see life after the movie.

"Serenity: Leaves On The Wind" # 1 will continue the Wash-less saga as the crew try to put loss behind them and continue to try to make an existence while on the run.

Written by Zack Whedon, pencils by Georges Jeanty and inks by Carl Story, this book could be just as successful at continuing a cancelled TV series like 'Buffy' was, also from Dark Horse. Not to mention the series will be produced by Joss Whedon.

"I cannot wait for this series," Matman had to add! "Firefly was one of my all time favorite shows
and to get the further adventures from a great company like Dark Horse is something special."

'Serenity - Leaves In The Wind', a six issue series
begins on January 29th, 2014.
