Antony Johnston's CODENAME BABOUSHKA Returns In August!

6/29/2017

Picture
Press Release

Writer Antony Johnston (THE FUSE, Atomic Blonde/The Coldest City) and artist Shari Chankhamma (THE FUSE) will launch GHOST STATION ZERO, a new four-issue CODENAME BABOUSHKA mission, this September from Image Comics.

"Ghost Stations" are abandoned Soviet bases from the Cold War, long forgotten and useless...or so people think! When an EON agent goes missing on the trail of a ghost station in the Swiss mountains, Mr. Clay turns to crime-boss-turned-blackmailed-international-superspy BABOUSHKA to investigate—and what she finds is explosive!

“Fans already know that Baboushka is an all-action modern pulp heroine,” said Johnston. “But we hope people new to her adventures (especially fans of Atomic Blonde, ahem) will get on board the roller coaster ride of GHOST STATION ZERO, because we're turning it up to 11, cutting the brake lines, and mixing our metaphors all over the place. New villains, new gadgets, new plots to take over the world...all in a day's work for Baboushka, who of course looks fabulous while doing it.”

“It’s been too long since the last arc, but I'm happy to be back with Baboushka and Antony again!” said Chankhamma. “This time, we get to see her in a lot more different environments, and with that, more opportunities to show what she’s capable of. This is a really action-packed arc with Baboushka constantly trying to get out of one tricky situation, just to get into another. And of course, we've got a lot more explosions. I’m getting pretty good at rendering explosions.”

GHOST STATION ZERO #1 Cover A by Chankhamma (Diamond code: JUN170657) and Cover B by Becky Cloonan (Diamond code: JUN170658) arrive in comic book stores Wednesday, August 2nd. The final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, July 10th.

GLADD Honors BOOM! Studios' THE WOODS

6/27/2017

Picture
Press Release

BOOM! Studios and GLAAD honored writer James Tynion IV and artist Michael Dialynas' original comic book series THE WOODS in Los Angeles last Friday as the winner of the 2017 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. The announcement was first made at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony on April 1st.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives. The Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community that build support for equality. The Outstanding Comic Book award was officially presented to James Tynion IV, representing the series’ creative team, at the BOOM! Studios office in Los Angeles.

"Honestly, this award means the world,” says Tynion IV. “When I was reading comics in high school, it felt like I couldn't find any stories that represented my life or my struggles. I was a young man, looking to fiction to find a path for myself and queerness was always just subtext, punchline, or fleeting. I made a promise to myself then that when I become a comic book writer, I wouldn't do that. I would put the queer characters up front and center with the rest. Not necessarily to tell stories about their queerness, but to show that I existed as a part of the same world as my straight peers. To make sure that the high school James of today can find stories that speak to him on the comic shelf.

"To win this award for the series that I believe is the purest expression of myself is one of the greatest honors of my young life."

"This award means everything to me and I'm very honored to have our colorful space adventure recognized among the other amazing and high-caliber titles in the Outstanding Comic Book category," adds Dialynas.

Debuting in 2014, The Woods follows the journey of 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI who vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. The series wraps up its ambitious three-year storyline in full this October with the release of The Woods #36. The series has consistently received critical acclaim for its diverse representation of LGBTQ youth among its core lead characters—including Ben, Isaac, Sander, and Sanani—and an equally vibrant supporting cast.

The Woods is in development with Universal Cable Productions at the Syfy Network as an hour-long drama with Michael Armbruster writing the pilot and Executive Producing. Brad Peyton (San Andreas) is set to direct and Executive Produce, alongside his producing partner Jeff Fierson, Ross Richie (BOOM! Studios Founder & CEO), and Stephen Christy (BOOM! Studios President of Development), with Josh Levy (BOOM! Studios, Senior Vice President, Television) as Co-Executive Producer.

For more on The Woods and more from BOOM! Studios, please visit www.boom-studios.com and follow @boomstudios on Twitter. Print copies of The Woods are available for sale at local comic book shops and bookstores, and digital copies are available from content providers like comiXology, iTunes, and Google Play.

Kickstarter Alert: CURSE OF THE VESSEL

6/26/2017

by Brian LeTendre

This week's Kickstarter alert is for a book we talked about a few years ago on the show that I really enjoyed. Michael Leal's Curse of the Vessel is a supernatural revenge story that Michael himself describes as a "haunted Reservoir Dogs."

Here's the synopsis for Curse of the Vessel:

Vincent Faustino has become an involuntary vessel for the dead.
Once a brutal mafia enforcer, now his life is not his own. He has been branded with a magical sigil that allows spirits to possess his body at will. On the run from both his deadly former associates and law enforcement, he is wanted for murders and events he has no memory of. Vincent relentlessly hunts the man who cursed him, continually being hijacked by restless spirits who have their own personalities and agendas, both good and evil.

This is the torture he must endure. This is the punishment for his evil past. Vincent Faustino is forever “The Vessel”.

The Kickstarter campaign is for the production of the second issue of Curse of The Vessel, though if you support the project, the rewards contain issue #1 as well. So head over and check it out, and good luck to Mike with the campaign!

Also, if you're looking for a cool comics and pop culture podcast to add to your weekly listening, check out Who The What Now?!, which Mike co-hosts with his wife Michelle. You can listen right here.

Joe Sinnott, the award’s namesake and first recipient, made a statement recently regarding this year’s inductees:

“I was quite pleased to hear that the Inkwell Awards
has selected two very deserving inkers into the
Hall of Fame class of 2016: Frank Giacoia and Josef
Rubinstein.

Frank was a fabulous inker and a good friend of
mine, who left us much too soon. It was always
a pleasure meeting up with Frank at shows and
spending time with him. Frank’s smooth, thick line
graced the pages of virtually every Marvel title. I
really enjoyed Frank’s inking over Jack Kirby on
Captain America. Like myself, we pretty much
inked the Marvel Universe.

Joe is an outstanding inker and portrait artist as well.
I absolutely am honored by the great job he did in
capturing my likeness for the cover of the 2nd Annual
Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge. I once pencilled a piece
that Joe inked for The Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe Index collection. At that time Joe was doing
all these Marvel Universe books and he told me that
he had actually worked on more Marvel characters
than I had. Joe also did some great background inks
on the Superman Vs. Spider-Man Treasury Edition that
I inked over John Buscema.

It is wonderful that Frank and Joe are the recipients
of the 2016 Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award. These
two superb artists make the already great list of Hall
of Famers even more elite.

Thank you to the Inkwell’s committee for electing
them, and thanks to everyone for their continued
support of the Inkwell Awards.

Joe Sinnott

The ceremony kicked off with a special appearance by Guest Speaker and industry legend Joe Giella who discussed the artform of comic-book inking, his career in the medium and its artists. Inkwell Awards founder and director Bob Almond acted as both ceremony host and co-presenter, joined by hostess “Ms. Inkwell,” as portrayed by Hailey Skaza-Gagne (formerly Holly Black).  Artist and Inkwell Assistant Director Mike Pascale acted as co-presenter. Industry pioneer Allen Bellman acted as guest speaker to discuss his days in art school and at Timely Comics alongside SRA award recipient Violet Barclay. Joe Goulart gave a tribute for his friend and recently departed legendary creator and Inkwell Ambassador Rich Buckler. Bob gave a tribute for longstanding and inspiring Inkwell member Stacey Aragon who recently passed after a decade long battle with cancer. He renamed the SRA Award the Stacey Aragon Special Recognition Award (SRA) starting in 2018. All acceptance statements from the winners can be found in the “Results” section of the Inkwell Awards' website in the near future.

Peck and Haun Travel to THE REALM in September

6/20/2017

Picture
Press Release

Co-creators Seth M. Peck (X-Men) and Jeremy Haun (THE BEAUTY) team up with colorist Nick Filardi and letterer Thomas Mauer for THE REALM, a new ongoing series that dives into the grit and chaos of the post-apocalyptic world.

Fifteen years ago, our world was overrun by creatures of myth: orcs, dragons, and other nameless horrors that threw the entire planet into total chaos. Today, the shattered remnants of civilization must fight tooth and nail to survive in a deadly new era of violence and mayhem.

“Creator-owned comics are the only place you can tell stories like THE REALM exactly as you want them to be told,” said Peck. “You can have an F-14 take on a dragon in the skies over Chicago, or have a horde of orcs lay siege to the White House without worrying about special effects or budgets. At the same time, you can tell very intimate, emotional, and human stories and develop complicated, meaningful characters over the course of time. With THE REALM, Jeremy and I wanted to blend all the genres we enjoy, mix in plenty of action, and give readers something unique and exciting to look forward to each month.”

“THE REALM is the book I've wanted to do my entire life,” said Haun. “It's the perfect mash of everything I love to draw. Post-apocalyptic landscapes, dark magical citadels, machine gun-toting barbarians, unnamable horrors, DRAGONS—it doesn't get more fun than this.”

THE REALM #1 Cover A by Jeremy Haun and Nick Filardi (Diamond code: JUL170714) and Cover B by Tony Moore (Diamond code: JUL170715) will launch on Wednesday, September 13th.
