Press Release

Connecticut ComiCONN – the State’s BIGGEST celebration for comic books, collectibles and cosplay returns for it’s 5th annual con. To meet the demands of its fans, this powerful, pop-culture party has grown to a three-day event and found a new fortress of fun at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport,CT!

Connecticut ComiCONN delivers amazing awesomeness as fans have the opportunity to meet Marvel and DC Comics creators who bring their heroes to life in the comic pages, actors from TV/movie screens and even in video games! There will be Costume and Trivia Contests, Cool Cars like the Batmobile, folks dressed as heroes and villains from comics, Star Wars, Doctor Who and more! Fans can shop over 300 tables of cools stuff - from vintage and modern comics to original artwork, action figures and movie props, posters and gaming supplies – you’ll find it here!

“Connecticut ComiCONN is fun for fans of all ages”, said Mitch Hallock, promoter of the event, “This show was created to give comic fans a chance to meet each other, their favorite actors from TV and movies, get autographs, photos and sketches, talk to the folks who created the heroes they “marvel” at!” said Hallock.

“ComiCONN is a great value as well! Fans don’t have to spend hours traveling and spending a huge amount of money just to get pushed around like at the big city cons. We have top talent named like artists David Finch, Howard Porter, Jerry Ordway, Bob Camp and more. Being at the Webster Bank Arena allows easy access off the highway, or a few minutes walk from the Metro-North train station and even Long Island fans can walk off the Port Jefferson ferry into the show”. Last year’s show drew a long line of thousands of eager fans, so this bigger venue allows for more exhibit areas and we have added extra days. “There are people and things to see all day from Friday thru Sunday so fans do not have to rush”, Hallock added.

“We are very excited to have Connecticut ComiCONN on our calendar of entertainment.” saidHoward Saffan, president of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, LLC, which manages the arena. “We’re committed to bringing family fun and super-powered events like in the world to the arena, and Connecticut ComiCONN has established itself as great time for comic book and movie fans in the North East.”
So put on your capes and get your geek on – because it’s time for Connecticut ComiCONN!

Connecticut ComiCONN is happening from Friday, August 15 from 3-8:00pm, Saturday August 16 from 10am – 6:00pm and Sunday, August 17, 2014 from 10am- 5:00pmat the Webster Bank Arena inBridgeport, CT. Press Release

CAPS, the Comic Art Professional Society, will launch an ongoing series of eBay auctions of original comic art. Its goal is to raise funds for medical care for Sharon Sakai, the wife of respected cartoonist and longtime CAPS member Stan Sakai, creator of the samurai rabbit USAGI YOJIMBO. Sharon has been battling a debilitating brain tumor for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is currently at home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicine that costs more than the Sakai's insurance covers. 100% of the proceeds of these auctions will go directly to Stan and Sharon Sakai to help pay their ongoing medical expenses.

The CAPS auctions will be conducted through eBay.com beginning on Thursday, March 6, with a new set of auctions every following Thursday. Each auction, sold under the seller name of "CAPSauction", will be ten days in length with twenty to forty items in each set of auctions. The donations of original artwork and collectibles (including newly created art unique to this event, vintage comic book pages, comic strips, illustrations, animation art, limited edition statues, and IDW Artist's editions books) number over three hundred with new items arriving every day.

Contributors include:  Adam Hughes, Alex Maleev, Arthur Adams, Batton Lash, Darwyn Cooke, Eric Powell, Jan Duursema, Jerry Ordway, Jordi Bernet, Matt Groening, Michael Allred, Mike Mignola, Paul Gulacy, Sanjuliàn, Scott Shaw!, Jim Steranko, Tim Sale, William Stout, Bill Sienkiewicz, Cameron Stewart,  Dan Brereton, Daniel Parsons, Dave Gibbons, Dean Yeagle, Doug Sneyd, Dustin Nguyen, Bill Morrison, Tone Rodriguez, Sergio Aragonés, Fabio Moon, Francisco Francavilla, Gene Ha, Geof Darrow, Gilbert Hernandez, Jack Davis, James O'Barr, Kevin Eastman, Jeff Lemire, Jeff Smith, Kazu Kibuishi, Liam Sharp, Tom Richmond, Michael Jantze, Olivia, Oscar Martin, Paul Chadwick, Richard Corben, Tom Mandrake, Walter Simonson, Charles Vess, Dan Spiegle, J. Many of the pieces featuring Usagi Yojimbo will appear in a new oversized hardcover book from Dark Horse, THE SAKAI PROJECT: ARTISTS CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS OF USAGI YOJIMBO, which will be released on July 23, 2014. All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai. Much of the custom Usagi Yojimbo art created for this book will also be sold as a part of CAPS' online auctions.

These fund-raising auctions will be promoted through ComicArtFans.com, and the CAPS - COMIC ART PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY Facebook page where you will be able to see updated information such as when certain pieces will be auctioned.

Geeky Jerseys For A Geeky Guy!

2/26/2014

by Matman

What happens when you take my favorite sport and mix it with one of favorite geeky things? You get this amazing jersey!

Arriving yesterday was my 'TARDIS 4.0' hockey jersey from our new friends at Geeky Jerseys, located at www.geekyjerseys.com. Not only is this sweater now the coolest jersey I own, but it is one quality garment.

First of all the design (call box, 'MATMAN' name, TARDIS windows and piping) is woven into the jersey fabric, meaning they aren't sewn onto it. This creates a more natural look and feel when you have it on. The neck is stitched and reinforced with laces for added class!

I got mine customized so the number '9' is stitched on the back and arms and very sturdy. In a nice touch, there are shoulder patches also sewn on (see picture below) for 'St. John Ambulance'. The right back of the jersey has a cool 'Geeky Jersey' sewn on patch!

Could I wear this jersey playing hockey? Absolutely! The cut is perfect for fitting shoulder and elbow pads and feels comfortable around the gloves.

Would I wear this jersey playing hockey? heck no! Sure it's dark but I don't wanna get mine or anyone's blood on it or get it cut by a skate.

I will be on a Doctor Who panel in March and will certainly be wearing this and I promise to be sporting this at book signings for my Doctor Who book, no matter the month!!!

For more information on this and other cool jerseys just go to www.geekyjerseys.com.

Press Release

This summer, Archie Comics will be launching DIARY OF A GIRL NEXT DOOR: BETTY, a young adult novel starring the iconic character Betty Cooper.

In an original story by acclaimed writer Tania del Rio, Betty is a freshman at Riverdale High attempting to balance love, with her crush Archie, and friendship, with her BFF Veronica, along with all the other trials and tribulations that accompany high school drama.

The diary entry style of the prose is written from Betty's point of view along with Betty's sketches mixed in to illustrate just how crazy a teen girl's life can be. del Rio described her take on Betty: "She sometimes takes herself a little too seriously, but it's her brilliant imagination and tenacity that helps her deal with all the craziness in her life, and that's what I love best about her character."

Written by del Rio, with art by Bill Galvan, Bob Smith & Jack Morelli, DIARY OF A GIRL NEXT DOOR goes on sale July 16th!

Variant Cover For 'The Fuse' # 2

2/21/2014

Picture
Press Release

Image Comics is pleased to announce that the second issue of THE FUSE by Antony Johnston and Justin Greenwood will feature a variant cover by Riley Rossmo (Bedlam, Drumhellar) that will make the new science-fiction crime series a must-have for readers’ pull lists.    Praise for THE FUSE:

"Space cops investigating space murders is the sort of synopsis that gets my attention, and so far Johnston and Greenwood appear to have the world-building skills and noir chops to back it up... If you're a fan of detective stories and sci-fi that's more gritty than glossy, it's worth a look." —Laura Hudson, WIRED

"THE FUSE thrusts us immediately into a future that seems grimy rather than shiny, and cold rather than optimistic, and it's an impeccable setting for a neo-noir... A must-read. 5/5" —Jen Aprahamian, Comic Vine

"This is "lived-in" science fiction that develops itself slowly, through accumulation rather than explanation... By Issue #5 "The Fuse" will be what everyone's talking about. Why not get a head start? 4/5" —Marykate Jasper, Comic Book Resources
"Crisp dialogue, fantastic milieu, intriguing mystery, involving and interesting characters... writer Antony Johnston and artist Justin Greenwood deliver it all in this one." —Marc Mason, The Comics Waiting Room

"Detective Noir set in a space station? I'd buy that even if it wasn't by the guy who's quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. Pick of the week." —Drew Bradley, Multiversity Comics

"The Fuse hits fast and hard, with unapologetic wit and a no-nonsense attitude... It's clear that Johnston is playing his cards close to the chest, leaving many questions unanswered, keeping you hanging on to the final pages begging for more. 4/5" —Bree Ogden, Bloody Disgusting

THE FUSE #2 will be available on 3/19 for $3.50 and can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JAN140590. The variant cover for the second issue featuring art by Riley Rossmo can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code JAN148144.

Learn More About Comic Binding With Omaha Bound

2/21/2014

We've talked quite a bit on the podcast about comic binding, as we have several listeners who have gotten parts of their collections bound. Our good pal Wayne is an avid binder, and he recommended a great video podcast to us this week that really dives into the world of comic binding.

Omaha Bounds is a podcast done by the folks at Single Bound Studios, and its a great show. They feature close looks at different binds as well as interviews with people from the comic binding community. Check out an episode in the player above, and let us now if you take the plunge into getting your comics bound!

The Best Return To 'The New 52' Is...

2/20/2014

Picture
by Matman

I have become kinda jaded with almost every 'return' to The New 52; Teen Titans, Superman, Shazam just to name a few. But a few days ago I was reading 'Justice League' # 28 and to say I was blown away is an understatement!

As the events of 'Forever Evil' unfold around the DCU, writer Geoff Johns takes a little sidestep with the story of a young Doc Magnus and his creation, the Metal Men. In the 1970's I was always captivated by the team but other than an appearance in 'DC Comics Presents' # 4, I never thought anyone could capture the fun, insanity and innocence of this team... until now, until 'Justice League' # 28!

Here we see Doc Magnus as a young scientist working for the US military who has created a team of robots based on elements; gold, tin, mercury, bronze, led and platinum. But what Doc Magnus doesn't realize is his creations have become more human than machine. Instead of mindless drones, he has created beings with compassion and a desire to help when needed.

The art by Ivan Reis (and inks by Joe Prado and Scott Hanna) is amazing as usual. Every time his pencil hits page it seems to be a masterpiece. This book can't be missed!

For me 'Justice League' has been one of the most consistent books DC has been putting out
and with so many bad 'introductions' since the relaunch it is so cool to have the new better than the old.

Matman Rating: 5 out of 5
welcome backs
