As I’ve mentioned on the show before, Thor has never really been one of my favorite characters. Which is weird, because I love mythology and I’m a huge D&D nerd. But I think maybe I like that stuff to stand on its own instead of being co-opted into a superhero-based world. Whatever the reason, thor as a superhero character in the Marvel universe has never really been that interesting to me. Until now. The idea that the Thor we know is now no longer worthy to wield his mighty hammer Mjolnir is interesting to me. Also interesting is that someone else who is deemed worthy has found the hammer and has no real idea what she’s gotten herself into. But the most interesting hook right now is that we have no idea who this new Goddess of Thunder is. Writer Jason Aaron has done a nice job of introducing new readers to this series. In addition to the obvious central mystery of who is under the helm, Aaron pits Thor against a well-established enemy--the frost giants. We also see the dark elf sorcerer Malekith, so anyone who’s seen Thor: The Dark World will have a familiar foe to help bring them into this new storyline. I especially enjoyed the interplay between Thor and Mjolnir, as you get a real look into the new Thor’s personality as well as the wonder she has as she begins to explore her new powers. Russell Dauterman’s art and Matt Wilson’s colors are fantastic in this issue, as we see Thor test the limits of what Mjolnir can do against the frost giants. Underwater battles, lightning strikes and shattering ice creatures combine for some epic battle scenes. Those big scenes are contrasted well by smaller moments with Malekith and the Odinson as well, and Dauternman’s depiction of Malekith is appropriately evil. Two issues into the new Thor series and I’m having a lot of fun so far. Like everyone else, I want to know who this new Thor is, but I hope Aaron takes his sweet time with the reveal, as there’s plenty of other stuff to dig into with this book. ![]() by Matman Why leave your house today with a possible risk of injury looking for the perfect Doctor Who gift when that gift is right here!!! For those who didn't know, Sharon has had a long battle with an inoperable brain tumor and the past year has been incredibly hard for Sharon, Stan and his entire family. During this time Stan kept all his convention commitments (like Sharon would have wanted him too) and was always keeping us up to date on what was going on. When we chatted in Boston he was his usual amazing and charming self, but his soul was back home with his high school sweetheart. I hope that everyone will keep the Sakai family in their prayers. This year the family also suffered a tragic loss when Stan lost an infant grandson. What I want everyone to do, if you haven't already gone out at gotten it, pick up a copy of THE SAKAI PROJECT to help financially support the family and all the medical bills that piled up this past year. And for Stan, pick up a USAGI YOJIMBO trade or two! I guarantee that you will not only love it, but those good feelings will help a friend through his grieving process. ![]() by Matman Another show has come and gone and once again... a great time was had by all. This was my first time attending Super Mega Fest and didn't quite know what to think or expect but what it ended up being was a fun time that once again broadened my geeky horizons. Known as a celebrity show the guest list read like a who's who of popular culture including Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man), Linda Harrison (Planet Of The Apes), singers Debbie Gibson and Micky Dolenz and a slew of other BIG name folks ... none bigger than Hulk Hogan! Taking place at the Framingham Sheraton; many people know it as the Castle), the entire floor was jam packed with comics, toys, art and everything else you would want. Once again, thansk to Keith Gleason and Amy Kukta for being suck awesome table mates (arrgghhhh). Burger damaged, pirates, hot dogs.... let it never end. Also seeing 'family' like Leo Marinak (of Con-Men fame), Tom and Karen Gosselin (nice boots), John Hebert and the legendary Joe Staton all make the experience more fun than work. I was honored to have Joe come by and purchase a book for his nephew. But..i loaded him up with goodies. I met some cool Whovians there who came buy and picked up a book from me. It sitll boggles my mind that people are actually responding the way they are about the book and i thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Interviews you can expect to hear... ...artist Joe St. Pierre and I discuss his new book THE NEW ZODIAX that you can see at www.newzodiax.com. ...the lovely and talented Debbie Gibson. Not only known for her amazing music career, she has stepped into some awesome SyFy films AND is an incredibly kind, funny and sweet lady. So thank you to the entire staff at Super Mega Fest for the great memories and hope to see y'all next near!! It's Thanksgiving week, and we are so very thankful for you, our loyal listeners! We've got a brand-new episode chock full of comic-y goodness for you to consume with your turkey this week. Here's the rundown:

He certainly didn't have the best voice in the band but he had a load of personality and much of that could be heard in much of KISS' older material. Since I haven't seen Ace Frehley since 1987 (opening for Iron Maiden) I jumped at the chance to see him promotiong his new CD, SPACE INVADER. Playing for a much bigger than expected crowd at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun in CT, Ace and his band hit the stage with RIP IT OUT and for the next 90 minutes, took us all on a nice trip down memory lane! Covering his solo career with gems like NEW YORK GROOVE, ROCK SOLDIERS and a few new ones like GIMME A FEELIN', Ace played every song with flash and style. His voice sounded pretty good and held out despite quite a few sound issues, but that is what makes live music so special. His current band features longtime pal Richie Scarlet (guitar/vocals) and bassist Chris Wyse but it is drummer Scot Coogan that stole the show. If it wasn't his thunderous and steady drums that kept you engaged it was his incredible vocal ability; singing lead on suck KISS classics like STRUTTER and LOVE GUN that made your ears notice. I'm sure Ace would admit he was the best singer up on the stage. Complete with tricked out guitars, ACE and his band put on a very energetic and very cool show. Ace, now many years sober seems to really enjoy the stage again and isn't the 'walking disaster' he used to be considered. Seeing him play his sort of street level, old school rock 'n' roll made me happy because it looks to be making him happy to play it... without the make-up and platform shoes e all remember him by. I found it interesting (but incredibly cool) that he played KISS songs that he didn't write or sing lead on, like DEUCE or KING OF THE NIGHT TIME WORLD. After all... his heart and soul is on all those records and has the right to play them. Thank you ACE and company for a great night of live and unpredictable rock 'n' roll, just the way it should be!!! So many feelings, you guys. Seriously, I cannot tell you how excited I am for "Spider-Verse," the Spider-Man event whose tag line is “Every Spider-Man--Ever.” Think about that. Think about how many cool Spider-characters we’ve seen over the years, whether they’re alternate earth Peters, "What If?" Mayday Parkers or Spider-Men from the far flung future. This event is all about bringing the Spider characters together to battle a predator that threatens all of their existence--The Inheritors. Many of you remember Morlun from the JMS run of Spider-Man and the event "The Other.” He’s kind of like a vampire dude that sucks the life force out of Spider beings. Well, Morlun has a whole family, and together they have been going into different universes and killing off all the variations of Spider-Man. So the Spidey’s that are left have to band together to fight Morlun and company. Amazing Spider Man #9, the first proper issue of Spider-Verse, is freaking fantastic. In it, peter Parker finally comes face to face with the other Spider-Men, Women and Hams that have been assembling from across the multiverse. And it is glorious. If you’re a longtime Spidey fan, some of the reveals in this issue will have you in tears, as they did me. Olivier Coipel’s art and Justin Ponsor’s colors absolutely sing in this issue, and they drive home the emotional beats of Dan Slott’s story. This first issue covers a lot of ground, even though we’ve been getting plenty of set-up in the "Edge of Spider-Verse" prequels. Even with that though, the big moments are given room to breathe. I am trying to keep my excitement in check, but "Spider-Verse," to me, has the potential to be the greatest Spider-Man event of all time. Here’s hoping that the rest of this story can keep up with its fantastic opening chapter. |
