I mentioned on the podcast recently that I was updating my 2013 podcasting book Making Ear Candy (I also wrote about it on my blog, which you can read here). Some things have changed since I first wrote the book four years ago, and I wanted to update things to make sure it continued to be a good resource for new podcasters. As part of the second edition update, I commissioned our friend Chris Giarrusso to create a cover that captured the vibe of the book. As you can see above, he freaking nailed it. Chris just gets me, and I could not be happier with how the cover came out. I'm getting a print proof made as we speak, and I'm hoping to have the new edition out by May. Stay tuned for me info on that, and in the meantime, go check out all of Chris' amazing work at www.chrisgcomics.com. Press Release

Last week at my local comic shop (Most Excellent Comics in Enfield, CT) I was looking throught the 50 cent comics and managed to pull the entire run of Charlton Comics classic character E-MAN! The run only lasted 10 issues, so yes… only $5.00 to collect and read some wild, imaginative and very ahead of its time stories. Created by writer Nicola Cuti and artist Joe Stanton, E-MAN # 1 made its debut in October of 1973 from the legendary Charlton Comics. A few years before Charlton tried their hand at superhero comics with varying success. E-Man was a character that read much like Plastic Man; a hero who could change shape made up of energy and had a weird sense of humor. As a kid I always thought E-Man was a bit too ‘adult’ for me but as I read all the comics this weekend I thought… “this stuff is so ahead of its time.” Interesting fact that artist Joe Stanton based the look of E-Man on Roger Moore who just took over the role of James Bond. The book was the lowest selling Charlton publication on the newsstand but was the company’s most popular subscription title. So who or what was E-Man? E-Man is a sentient packet of energy that while learning about life was knocked off course and ended up on earth. He befriended and exotic dancer named Nova Cane and the two had wild and crazy adventures until Nova herself was caught in an explosion and became like him. Like I said… ahead of its time!!!

Image Comics is thrilled to announce CROSSWIND, the brand-new ongoing thriller from fan-favorites Gail Simone (Red Sonja, Secret Six) and Cat Staggs (Wonder Woman ‘77, Smallville Season 11), arriving in stores this June. A slick and ruthless Chicago hitman. A smart but downtrodden Seattle housewife. When an inexplicable event strikes these two random strangers, their bodies, souls, and lives are switched—to potentially deadly effect. “This is possibly the most thrilling project of my career, and Cat Staggs brought her best stomping boots to the game; she's absolutely killing it,” said Simone. “There's nothing else quite like it. It smells of gunpowder, nitro, and one-hour hotel rooms. It's wrong and messed up, and we hope people love it as much as we do.” “I am thrilled to be working with the incomparable Gail Simone in a genre that is close to my heart,” said Staggs. “The challenge of bringing these characters to life and developing their world has made this project something I’m proud of. Readers are in for a wild ride.” CROSSWIND #1 (Diamond code: APR170674) hits comic book stores Wednesday, June 21st. Final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, May 29th. On every level, from longtime fans to new readers to retailers, it exceeded our internal expectations by several multiples,” said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. “Based on that reaction, we’re upping the ante and expanding the program to include two of our biggest series of the summer and creating special features, including a ‘deleted scene’ that otherwise would have never been made available to the general public. This really is a special format and, as a show of thanks to those readers who get their pre-orders in early with their local comic shops, we’re redoubling our efforts to pack each and every Valiant pre-order edition to the gills with exclusive content too expansive for a standard comic.” First: Reserve each issue of Livewire’s stunning, much-anticipated solo debut with the SECRET WEAPONS #1–4 PRE-ORDER EDITION BUNDLE – spanning the complete, VALIANT PRESTIGE-format limited series from Academy Award-nominated writer Eric Heisserer (screenwriter of the international hit motion picture ARRIVAL, as well as the upcoming BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER feature films from Sony Pictures) and Harvey Award-nominated artist Raul Allen (Wrath of the Eternal Warrior)! In his quest for world betterment at any cost, Harada sought out and activated many potential psiots like himself. Those who survived, but whose powers he deemed to have no value to his cause, were hidden away at this installation. But Livewire, having studied Harada’s greatest strengths and learned his deepest weaknesses, senses opportunity where he once saw failure. A young girl who can talk to birds… A boy who can make inanimate objects gently glow… To others, these are expensive disappointments. But, to Livewire, they are secret weapons…in need of a leader. BOOM! Studios is proud to announce THE UNSOUND, an all-new original comic book series from writer Cullen Bunn (X-Men: Blue, Deadpool, The Sixth Gun) and artist Jack T. Cole. Debuting in June, The Unsound follows the journey of Ashli, a young woman caught in the middle of a strange supernatural conspiracy that reveals to her a much more terrifying version of our world than she ever imagined. Ashli’s first day as a nurse at Saint Cascia Psychiatric Hospital turns into a nightmare as a bloody riot sends her fleeing into the bowels of the hospital. As this unsettling descent takes her to a hellish world populated by lunatics and monsters, cloaked in a secret history of black magic and heinous scientific experiments, she’s forced to ask one horrifying question: Is there such a thing as sanity? “The Unsound is a surreal, scary story, full of chilling encounters and haunting experiences, and it delves deep into the nature of reality, perception and insanity,” says Bunn, whose The Empty Man graphic novel from BOOM! Studios will be released as a feature film from 20th Century Fox. “It's territory that I find myself drawn to frequently, and in many ways, this is a sister series to The Empty Man. Here, though, we're exploring a new landscape and developing a new horrific mythos.” Cole adds, “As an artist, working with Cullen Bunn's creative genius for horror offers up many exciting opportunities to visually explore the genre." The Unsound is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to ambitious original series such as Victor LaValle’s Destroyer by Victor LaValle and Dietrich Smith; Godshaper by Simon Spurrier and Jonas Goonface; Grass Kings by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins; Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora; The Woodsby James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas; and Irredeemable by Mark Waid and Peter Krause. “Working with Cullen on The Empty Man was one of my favorite experiences of recent years, so I jumped at the chance to help usher in his next horror classic,” said Eric Harburn, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “A cerebral, unsettling tale of an asylum on the brink of hysteria, The Unsound is also a showcase for Jack T. Cole—your new favorite artist.” For more on The Unsound and more from BOOM! There is a bad connotation to the word 'crossover' in comics. For most of us we think of a comic company event requiring a zillion other purchases. Or... it is a crossover that seems forced and doesn't read like an organic event. But we are two issues into an event that really seems to have a great flow and understanding of ALL the characters. From BOOM Studios and DC comes PLANET OF THE APES / GREEN LANTERN. This six issue event has everything to make fans of both franchises explode with delight. From a story by Robbie Thompson the story is written by Justin Jordan, drawn by Barnaby Bagenda, colored by Alex Guimaraes and lettered by Ed Dukeshire this story feels real, right and puts a nice spotlight on both!!! And the last page of the second issue.... well.... wow.... |
