2/11/2017

Press Release

Tied to its upcoming original seriesGRASS KINGS by Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT) and Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust), BOOM! Studios is excited to debut “Kingdom of Grass,” an original song and video by the band, Godkin, which features Jenkins on vocals and guitar. The video is available to watch here.

“GRASS KINGS is 100% a passion project, and as such, it has spilled over into many other aspects of my life, and this song and music video is one result of this,” said Jenkins. “With partners, and now bandmates, Matt Spreen and Kat Westermann, we have created this song and video as a companion piece toGRASS KINGS. We had such a great time making this song we are now working on an entire album of songs that exist alongside the Grass Kings world, with our new band Godkin.”

GRASS KINGS is a rural mystery centered around the tragic lives of three brothers who rule a trailer park kingdom that's a beacon for the hopeless, the lost, and the desperate poor seeking a promised land. But will one brother's decision to take in an enigmatic young woman destroy everything the Grass Kings have built?

Final orders for GRASS KINGS #1 are due on Monday, February 13, and the issue goes on sale in comic shops on Wednesday, March 8. It features covers by Jenkins, Kindt, and Fiona Staples (Saga).

Get Ready For THE CREEPS

Comic fans old enough to remember hold fond memories and feelings for the classic Warren black and white magazines like CREEPY, EERIE, VAMPIRELLA and THE ROOK. For us being a bit younger, these magazines introduced to a world that was a bit more scary and 'off limits' to us young'uns.

A few months ago I discovered a magazine that celebrates everything awesome, fun and amazing about those oversized magazines called THE CREEPS... by Warrant Publishing. If you didn't know any better you would think you were reading one of those classic magazines; amazing art, thought provoking stories and subtle humor.

Issue number 10 was just released and can be picked up at a Barnes And Noble near you! The great news is that starting with the next issue, you will be able to order it thru Previews at your local comic shop.

I will be reviewing the latest issue in an upcoming episode of Secret Identity!!!

Catching Up With ELECTROLYTE

2/4/2017

Being sick SUCKS!!!! I have had whatever the new 'super germ' is for almost two months... feeling fine for a bit and then BAMM-O, down for the count. Last week I was literally bed ridden and took the time to catch up on some comics, one of those was ELECTROLYTE AND THE JUSTICE PURVEYORS!

Created and written by Patrick Reilly, ELECTROLYTE is the story about a hero who at first had a super lame power; curing hangovers!  He also had a lame group of heroes he hung out with like the Sentence Finisher, the Capitalist and the best of the bunch... Scabie!  As the series went on Electrolyte found out he could do more than cure hangovers... he could control water!

I have been a fan of this series since I first met Patrick many years ago at New York Comic Con and have been a fan of his ever since.  The story is smart, funny and quite clever with characters that are instantly relatable. As I finished the 10th issue (part one of the origin of Electrolyte) it made me realise again how much I love this world that Patrick has created.

Drawn by Renato Mapa Jr, inked by Dennis Crisostomo, colored by Francesca Zambon and lettered by Wilson, ELECTROLYTE is the complete package of fun story and eye catching visuals that needs to be given a chance.

You can check out all the fun at http://thejusticepurveyors.com/ and digital copies are available at COMIXOLOGY including the first two trade collections!

Remembering John Wetton

2/1/2017

Picture

As I write this, delete and rewrite I am flooded with emotion and a serious loss of words and lack of focus as I try to remember a musician that I admired, a voice that I consider perfect... and at the same time a friend who just passed away.

By the time I discovered John Wetton in 1982 as part of ASIA he had already carved out his place in history in some amazing bands like King Crimson and UK. With ASIA he struck lighting in a bottle, but within a few years the dream situation turned toxic and John was on his own, recording some amazing solo albums to a world that wasn't listening. When I met John in 2002 he was just about to hit rock bottom. He was drinking way too much (after having logged many years of sobriety) and was unable to see his young son which started the free fall.

Meeting my hero was exciting but seeing him in this condition was tragic.  Following a trading of letters and emails John took it upon himself to call me one day and started a routine of talking almost every day on the phone for almost 2 years.  In those times I forgot about 'the rock star' and just focused on 'the man', talking to him when he was in bad shape which a few times ended up with me frustrated and yelling at him.  "You mean so much to so many people and you have talents that God blessed you with and you are just wasting them." I didn't think he was listening most of the time.

Then one day... John stopped drinking and decided to get his life and career back on track.  John worked hard, faced his critics and won.  I was so friggin' proud of him for having the strength to fight his dragon's head on, face his problems and win.

I remember getting a call where John said "Don't tell anyone but the original band is getting back together!"  Imagine sitting on that news?  I still can see and hear him on stage with ASIA in 2005 looking healthy, playing brilliantly and sounding fantastic.  Every time John came to town with ASIA, UK or with the School Of Rock he would always do everything to make my family and I feel welcome. If I was by myself he would always ask and want to know "How are the girls?"

The last few years John was fighting a very private battle with cancer.  I gave him his space to fight and as I write this I feel real guilty about that. And now he is gone.

This took me almost two hours to write this and it is not even close to what I want to say.  What I want people to know about John Wetton is how much he overcame in his life; the hurts he endured and the battle he fought and won.  John was so much stronger than he gave himself credit for.

I miss you already!!!!

Press Release

Mike Mignola, the legendary creator of Hellboy and NEW YORK TIMES bestselling novelist Christopher Golden reunite for the epic conclusion to Baltimore with Baltimore: The Red Kingdom, a five part comic book series from Dark Horse Comics co-written by Mignola and Golden, with art by award winning children’s book illustrator Peter Bergting, colors by Michelle Madsen and stunning covers by Ben Stenbeck (Frankenstein Underground).

“By the time the rest of the world took his evil seriously, it was too late to stop the Red King from coming to power,” said acclaimed co-writer and novelist Christopher Golden. “Now his evil spreads. The weak and the monstrous fall into line behind him. As the Red Kingdom grows, it’s never been more important to rise up and resist!”

In Baltimore: The Red Kingdom, Lord Baltimore is missing. The Red King—evil incarnate—is taking over the world. Baltimore’s team has been driven apart, with some of them dying on the frontlines, while others are in hiding. Since the day he set out for revenge on the vampire who killed his family, Baltimore’s fight has gotten bigger than he’d ever imagined, but what role will he take as evil finally threatens to consume the world?

The first issue of Baltimore: The Red Kingdom is on sale from Dark Horse Comics on February 1, 2017.
