I have become kinda jaded with almost every 'return' to The New 52; Teen Titans, Superman, Shazam just to name a few. But a few days ago I was reading 'Justice League' # 28 and to say I was blown away is an understatement!
As the events of 'Forever Evil' unfold around the DCU, writer Geoff Johns takes a little sidestep with the story of a young Doc Magnus and his creation, the Metal Men. In the 1970's I was always captivated by the team but other than an appearance in 'DC Comics Presents' # 4, I never thought anyone could capture the fun, insanity and innocence of this team... until now, until 'Justice League' # 28!
Here we see Doc Magnus as a young scientist working for the US military who has created a team of robots based on elements; gold, tin, mercury, bronze, led and platinum. But what Doc Magnus doesn't realize is his creations have become more human than machine. Instead of mindless drones, he has created beings with compassion and a desire to help when needed.
The art by Ivan Reis (and inks by Joe Prado and Scott Hanna) is amazing as usual. Every time his pencil hits page it seems to be a masterpiece. This book can't be missed!
For me 'Justice League' has been one of the most consistent books DC has been putting out and with so many bad 'introductions' since the relaunch it is so cool to have the new better than the old.
