A new chapter in Secret Identity's long and storied history begins this week with a new theme song, a streamlined format and the same geeky goodness you've come to expect over the last ten years. Here's your rundown:

Star Wars - The Force Awakens

12/19/2015

Unless you are living under a rock you know that the Star Wars franchise got a kick start a few days ago with STAR WARS - THE FORCE AWAKENS. Both Brian and I saw this epic movie and due to respect for the franchise and the fact that people won't get to see it for a few weeks, we won't say anything about it except it was amazing!!!! There are so many cool twists and turns that it wouldn't be fair for us to ruin it for anyone else so I have an idea....

Since people love to share and at least wanna let people know how they feel about it, just go to the Secret Identity Podcast Facebook page. I created a thread that will let you talk about the movie and get out the desire to share without ruining anything... so be respectful!!!

Brian's Pull List Adds and Drops--12/16/15

New comic day was yesterday, and that means some new books were added to my pull list, while others went away. This week I had three adds and one drop, so let’s get to it!

Adds

Lucifer--As someone who has never read Sandman (I know--take my geek card from me now), I had no connection to Lucifer as a character. But like many, I saw there was a TV show coming out, so I figured I'd give this one a shot. Not sure what to expect.

SuperZero--Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner--that's really enough to get me to try any book. But the premise of this one is pretty awesome--a high school senior decides she wants super powers, and recreates the origins of her favorite heroes in an attempt to get them. Brilliant.

Squadron Supreme--Marvel's version of the Justice League has always been an intriguing concept to me, but I've never really been on board one of their storylines from the get go, so this is a good chance. But the real pull for me is the creative team of Robinson and Kirk, who had a great run on Fantastic Four together.

Drops

We Are Robin--I really wanted to love this series. There were some interesting concepts in this book, but after six issues, it wasn't coming together in the way that I'd hoped. As soon as I saw that issue #7 was part of a crossover, I was out. It's a pet peeve of mine to have books in their first year get pulled into crossovers. The creative team has enough of a challenge establishing the characters, the setting and the first  main arc. They don't need to be interrupted by an event. And so, I bid the book adieu.

Do have any adds or drops this week? Let me know in the comments!

So here are a few more books making the cut and some that are on the fence... and you should never EVER be on the fence!

ANT MAN - I love the humor and the character. the book is a seriously fun adventure

BATMAN - not just because it's Batman, but it is still an amazing books that keeps me interested

BLACK HOOD - hard boiled crime / adventure story that is gritty where it needs to be

CAPTAIN AMERICA - still not into Falcon America... but so far the first three issues have me hooked!

DAREDEVIL - one of my top five characters, now being written by one of my top two writers. so far... so good!

And here are a few books that are on their last chance...

ACTION COMICS - I love the creative team but it needs to go somewhere FAST!

JLA - another book that started out real strong but delays have maybe forced me to look elsewhere for my enjoyment.

Singing The Pull List Boogie!

12/13/2015

Picture
by Matman

Ahhhhh the old 'Pull List!'  A few weeks back I wrote of my method for sorting, tracking and displaying my 40-50 new books a month. Well, starting today I will be sharing with you the books that have made the cut... PART ONE!

Emotional pull and brand loyalty aside I have decided that I will only be buying and reading the books I love and enjoy! I won't be swayed by events and like DC's current WAR OF THE ROBIN'S, I may skip out on tie in issues altogether. Why spend money on DETECTIVE COMICS if it involves the third part of a story i'm not reading? Here are five that have made the cut so far... in no particular order...

1. ARCHIE - too much fun NOT to be reading!

2. USAGI YOJIMBO - as i always say, consistently the best book going for the past 30 plus years

3. HOWARD THE DUCK - as long as this book retains its fun and 'cute' feel, i'm all in!

4. STAR WARS - you could scream brand loyalty only if it wasn't amazing!

5. STAR TREK - J.J. Abrams made me a fan... but IDW keeps me coming back!

...and here are a few on the bubble...

1. SUPERMAN - the last few issues haven't quite done it for me, at all.

2. WONDER WOMAN - the book looks beautiful, but not sure what is going on.

3. DOCTOR WHO - too dang many!!!!!

Archie Invades IDW This Month!

How do you get me to buy more comics? Have cool 'themed' covers. DC has has had some amazing monthly themed covers that I admit, have made me try a few new books that i may not have tried before, so this practice must work.  Currently DC is enjoying a LOONEY TUNES Moth with some awesome covers featuring some of Warner Bros. most enduring characters.

This month our pals at IDW have teamed up with our other pals at ARCHIE for an incredible way to celebrate the worlds of both amazing companies... but to make me buy more comics!

Featured on eight books (subscription covers) is an Achie themed cover complete with some of Archies best artist including Dan Parent, Tania del Rio, Francesco Francavilla and Robert Hack!

Thank you guys!!!! This was said somewhat sarcastic as I head to the comic store to pick up these books!

DEATH FOLLOWS Cullen Bunn to Dark Horse in May

12/11/2015

Press Release

This spring Dark Horse Books is pleased to offer a graphic novel collecting never-before-printed material from Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Sixth Gun) in Death Follows!

Originally debuting digitally through Monkeybrain as The Remains, Death Follows is horrifically and beautifully realized by A. C. Zamudio and Carlos Nicolas Zamudio. The print collection contains the original prose story by Cullen Bunn and a new cover by Simon Bisley.

“Death Follows is the darkest story I’ve written. It’s a supernatural horror tale set in rural North Carolina, the story of a mysterious farmhand who shows up at a struggling farm looking for work—and brings a nightmarish cycle of events with him,” remarked Bunn. “It starts with a simple (if somewhat strange) line: ‘The dead rats danced the day the hired man came around.’”

Birdie, her sister, their pregnant mother, and their frail father all live together on a struggling farm. When an itinerant farmhand named Cole comes to their aid, the children should be relieved. Instead, they find their lives spiraling into nightmare, as Cole regards Birdie’s sister with menacing desire. To make matters much worse, wherever he goes, the dead grow restless. As the horror threatens to consume her home and her family, Birdie is haunted by a chilling warning: Some secrets are meant only for the dead.

“The mystery and dread build to a horrific conclusion. It’s the stuff of nightmares, to be sure. I think readers of Harrow County will absolutely love this book,” added Bunn.
Death Follows is in stores May 25, 2016.

You know that we here at Secret Identity are into giving you free stuff (like 700+podcast episodes). Well, ComiXology is in the giving mood this holiday season as well, and their annual '12 Days of Free Comics' event is happening now.

Each day, ComiXology will be giving away a free digital comic. The comics go live at Noon EST, at which time the previous day's comic goes back to its regular price.

They started off with a bang this year, giving away Secret Wars #1 (a $5 book). You still have time to grab it if you get over to www.comixology.com before noon. Check in each day and grab your free book, as there are bound to be at least a few series you probably haven't read yet.

Happy Reading!
