Next week I’ll have my list of the 15 I’ll keep reading, the 5 that are on the fence and the 5 that were done after one! But until then, reviews of a few of this week’s books! Agree or disagree?
What did you think???
The Flash – I really enjoyed this book. Francis Manapul’s not only writing it BUT drawing as well! I must admit his art has grown on me and his take on Barry Allen is real good. A fun read that I think not only started strong but set the tone to help bring The Flash to the forefront of the DCU!
Justice League Dark – I was hoping this book would be an easy entry to the mystic side of the DCU and it didn’t disappoint! Peter Millighan did a fantastic job making it simple and using some incredibly interesting character. The art by Mikel Janin is stellar and the cover by Ryan Sook jumps right off the shelf. Could be my favorite book of the relaunch!
Blackhawks – I loved the old team, but this one not so much! This is a bad attempt to make a G.I. Joe style book complete with big weapons and nicknames. Everything felt forced and calculated and all I did was get angry as I turned the pages!
Aquaman – WOWZA!!! This one was a lot of fun. In his attempt to make Aquaman cool, Geoff Johns pokes fun at everything we hate about the character and made him…well cool! Penciler Ivan Reins and inker Joe Prado also made this a stunner to look at. I think they have finally gotten this character right! Must read!!!
Voodoo – She is a spy on earth studying humanity disguised as a stripper, but it works! Written by Ron Marz and incredibly drawn by Sami Basri this book may not be traditional in its approach, but could be real good!
Superman – The first Superman # 1 was iconic, the second (John Byrne) was brilliant and the third was incredibly underwhelming! Written by George Perez and drawn by Jesus Merino I expected a more dynamic story, but this one never was able to get going.
I, Vampire – Although not a bad book, I just couldn’t get into it at all. Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andrea Sorrentino are a talented team but if you don’t like vampires this book isn’t for you.
All Star Western – I’m not going to just ‘love it’ because it’s Jonah Hex, but I do ‘love it’ because once again Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray add something new to a character I thought I knew everything about! New location, new supporting cast and new artist Moritat make this an easy book to jump right in on.
Well that is it for the ‘New 52’! Next week I’ll be putting my list together of the 15 books I’ll be collecting, the 5 on the edge and the 5 no way’s!!! And Brian and I would love to see your lists too. If the only reason DC did this was to make people talk about their books than they did a great job!
