"Monkey See…Sea Monkey demonstrated to me it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories, author Matt (Matman) Herring blends humor and poignancy to create 'little Matt’s' unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, adventure and hope. You can visually see the tiny town in northern Connecticut through little Matt’s 10 year old eyes. In this clever and zany tale Matt pulls you into the small town of Broad Brook, CT in the year 1979, where Matt, his friends and loads of neighbors go on an adventure to save the world from the evil Sea Monkey population. You will smile throughout the book as Matt recalls memories from a simpler time while pulling you through this uproarious adventure.
This style of writing is new to me. Matt has you captivated on the quick moving adventure this story entails, yet you can see all the details vividly not only from the artwork but Matman’s writing style makes you see 'little Matt’s' surroundings so clearly without interfering with the story. Matt’s masterful handling of the POV, allows you to see things through 'little Matt’s' eyes, but distant enough to allow the clever story to seep in and that was the best element of this book: blending and balance. The book is like a tapestry, intricate parts coming together to create something vibrant and playful.
This is such a must-read for children of all ages and so fun that you will get caught up in the excitement and adventure. I would recommend this book with 5 thumps up. I know you’ll enjoy this one and I also encourage you to take your time perusing. This is a classic you will want to pull off the shelf more than once.
And oh by the way, while reading this story I highly recommend a can of Chef-Boyardee’s Cheese Ravioli as your snack and I will be on pins and needles waiting for the Crazy Crab adventure.
