*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Fearless Defenders has easily become one of my favorite Marvel books going right now. Writer Cullen Bunn has a great take on Misty Knight, Valkyrie and their supporting cast, and the tone of the series reminds me of Pak and Van Lente’s Incredible Hercules from a few years back.
In the latest issue, Valkyrie and Dr. Annabelle Riggs are dealing with the fact that they now share the same body in a Bruce Banner / Hulk sort of way. Luckily for the two of them, they can exert some control over when the change takes place, although it’s fun watching them iron out the kinks. The story has them teaming up with Elsa Bloodstone for an adventure in New York Chinatown, and the issue is full of nods to Big Trouble in Little China, which I love.
Will Sliney’s artwork on this series continues to be great, and he’s back after a break last issue. I love his redesign on Valkyrie’s costume, and it fits with her new status quo. Sliney does justice to the constantly rotating cast of Marvel’s coolest female heroes, and his style has a whimsy that is a perfect match for the tone of Bunn’s writing.
Fearless Defenders has been a fun book from the start, and this issue is a great jumping on point.
