Writer Jesse Young worked on a couple of books that we at Secret Identity really dug over the past few years--Ex Occultus and Indego Blue.
Lately, Jesse’s been writing some great short comics featuring a variety of artists, and he recently released his latest creation. The Daring Adventures of Android Jones is a fun sci-fi short that introduces a couple of characters I definitely want to see more from.
Earl Nathaniel Harrington Jones III, or “Android Jones” for short, surveys planets for a company called Zeller Industries with the help of his robot sidekick, Pip. In this short adventure, the two are sent on a surveying mission and Android Jones runs afoul of the alien race of warriors that inhabit the planet’s underground. It’s up to Pip to save his partner from an angry mob before they can tear him limb from limb.
Jesse Young packs a great introduction to the characters in this eight-page short, which had an Ice Pirates meets Buck Rogers feel to me. The relationship between Pip and Android Jones is a fun one, and you can tell they've had many adventures before this one. Artist Ryan Cody captures the tone of Young’s story well, and his artwork reminds me a bit of Mike Oeming’s work on Mice Templar.
All in all, this Android Jones short does what a first story should--makes you want to see more. Here’s hoping the further adventures of Pip and Earl aren't too far off. You can read the current short for free over at www.writejessewrite.com.
