When I read a World
War One or Two comic
I can't help but keep
an incredibly critical
eye fro details. Not that
I would ever fault an
artist for using the
wrong equipment, but
things like that pull me
right out of a story. Creator
Wayne Vansant not
only has an amazing eye
for accuracy but he is
a brilliant storyteller. This is no more on display than in his latest book, KATUSHA!
KATUSA is the story of a young girl from the Ukraine who sees her wonderful like and head full of dreams suddenly destroyed by the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. For Katusha, her family and village are still recovering form the divisions of the Russian Revolution and now with the advancement of the German army, her young life is now up in the air. Following the invasion, she escapes the Ukraine and ends up joining the Russian tank corps and begins to defend her homeland.
If you have ever read any of Wayne's previous books, you know what an amazing artist he is. KATUSHA takes his talents to the next level. The art is stunning and not only accurate, but so full of emotion. As I read the book I was so drawn in by the expressions of our young heroine, especially her big beautiful eyes.
KATUSHA is a tale about survival in a time of hopelessness and is so much more than a war comic or history lesson. There are some brutal moments but what the people of Russia went through in the early 1940's was brutal. If you loved Wayne's previous work, than KATUSHA will blow you out of the water.
