An all-new chapter in the “Battlestar Galactica” saga, Blood & Chrome takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama, finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Though Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle weary officer Coker (Ben Cotton, “Alcatraz”), the two men must set their differences aside when a routine escort mission with an enigmatic passenger (Lili Bordán, “Silent Witness”) turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet. by Brian LeTendre I’m a little behind on this book, as I had to track down a couple of Venom issues that were part of the just-finished Minimum Carnage event. Issue #12 of Scarlet Spider picks up after that event, with Kaine still struggling to deal with the death and destruction caused by carnage that he feels he should have prevented. As Kaine drowns his sorrows in alcohol, the hotel he’s staying at gets robbed, and his close friends have to play hero because Kaine isn’t in any shape to. By the end of the issue, Kaine manages to pull himself together and help save the day, reminding him that his place is in Houston, as a hero, and that he’s needed. Chris Yost created a nice jumping on point with this story,as it features pretty much all of the supporting cast of the book, and everyone hasa their moment to shine. Reilly Brown’s pencils are great, and he does a nice job of mixing in a little humor along with the action. Scarlet Spider has been consistently good from the start, and if you didn’t get on board when it launched, now is a fine time to start picking this one up. 4 out of 5 Get on Boards by Matman Happy new comic book day everyone!!! Here is a list of some of the new books I picked up and I think you should too... Doctor Who # 5 (IDW) - This issue starts a new ark featuring writer Andy Diggle, penciler Josh Adams and inker Marc Deering. If you're waiting for the season premier, pick up this book, it'll satisfy you. Green Arrow # 17 (DC) - After a bunch of start / stops with creators, the book settles on superstar writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino who hope to bring Green Arrow back to stability and excellence. Shadowman # 4 (Valiant) - Every book in the Valiant stable has been amazing, but Shadowman has been the best of all! Press Release Based on the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank 2008 release "Superman: Brainiac," SUPERMAN: UNBOUND finds the horrific force responsible for the destruction of Krypton – Brainiac – descending upon Earth. Brainiac has crossed the universe, collecting cities from interesting planets – Kandor, included – and now the all-knowing, ever-evolving android has his sights fixed on Metropolis. Superman must summon all of his physical and intellectual resources to protect his city, the love of his life, and his newly-arrived cousin, Supergirl. The film’s stellar voicecast is led by Matt Bomer (White Collar) as Superman, John Noble (Fringe, The Lord of the Rings films) as Brainiac, Stana Katic (Castle) as Lois Lane and Molly Quinn (Castle) as Supergirl. Supervising Producer James Tucker (Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) also directs the film from a script by Bob Goodman (Warehouse 13, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns). SUPERMAN: UNBOUND is coming to Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and for download on May 7, 2013. WonderCon/Anaheim will host the World Premiere of SUPERMAN: UNBOUND in late March. Check out the trailer below! By Matman (deep movie voice) In a time when most comic fans are tired and bored with manufactured events comes last January's 'Mars Attacks...' event from IDW! Following their lackluster 'Infestation' and the much better 'Star Trek / Doctor Who' crossover, 'Mars Attacks IDW' was not only creative, but every one of the books stood out on its own and was a fun little showcase for the series that was spotlighted. In the first week, 'Mars Attacks Popeye' told a humorous tale in the Popeye style, as if the Martians invaded a Popeye comic. Written by Martin Powell and lovingly drawn by Terry Beatty, it was the perfect way to start the fun. In 'Mars Attacks KISS (Chris Ryall words and Alan Robinson pictures), the cool twist was the invading aliens became the KISS characters. Nothing like seeing Spaceman as a well, a spaceman! Our friend, writer Eric Burnham (with artist Jose Holder) brought fans to the world of the 'Real Ghostbusters' and gives readers a taste of what may to be to come in the new Ghostbusters series. 'Mars Attacks Transformers' showcases one of IDW's most beloved properties that are more than meet the eye. Creators Shane McCarthy and Matt Frank do a fantastic job making you feel this isn't a forced concept.. The final issue, 'Mars Attacks Zombies VS. Robots' is nothing short of stunning. Written by Mr. Ryall and featuring stylized and very moody art by Andy Kuhn, this one is just a big punch up, chew up and shoot up! Each issue featured a regular covers by Ray Dillon as well as 2 variant covers featuring some of comics favorite characters like Judge Dredd and Opus and showcased some of comics greatest artist including Dave Sim, John Byrne and Mike and Laura Allred. What makes this series so good is that the premise of Mars Attacks is just that...what if Martians invaded these books as something else was happening? The books are drawn and written in the style of the comic without the concept being forced, especially noticed in the 'Popeye' and 'Zombies VS. Robots'. If you missed this one, be ready when IDW collects the series into one book. One can only hope there will be a Mars Attacks... Pat Two featuring the rest of the IDW stable; Doctor Who, Judge Dredd, Ninja Turtles, Star Trek and get ready for it... 'Mars Attacks My Little Pony.' by Brian LeTendre When I reviewed issue #14 of Red Hood and the Outlaws, I thought things were headed in the right direction with the book, as the arrival of the Joker signaled interesting times ahead for Jason Todd. Sadly, rather than focus on the relationship between the two characters the book had used the current storyline as an excuse to cross over with the Teen Titans, and the result is a waste of storyline potential. Jason Todd appears in a total of one panel in the entire issue, and it’s a flashback, as Arsenal explains Jason’s been kidnapped by the Joker. The rest of the issue features a banter-filled team-up between the Teen Titans and the outlaws as they take on a group of homeless people that have been turned into a crazed mob by Joker Gas. The heroes make snide comments to one another as they try not to deal with the mob without seriously hurting anyone. The action is bland, the dialogue is not great, and the most exciting moment in the issue comes from a teaser page that show Deathstroke planning to target the outlaws in the near future. I was really disappointed in this issue. Scott Lobdell seems to be limping to the finish line with his run, despite having all the pieces in front of him to tell a great story. I am holding out to see what new writer James Tynion IV (Talon) is going to with the outlaws when he takes over with issue #19. If it’s a Teen Titans crossover, I’m done. 1 out of 5 Wastes of Potential Press Release Almost 70 years ago in Brussels, a young man named Pierre Culliford applied for a job as a dental assistant only to find that he had missed the interview by 15 minutes. Culliford was forced to take a job as an illustrator instead. Today, his legions of fans can look back on that late appointment as the moment Culliford became the cartoonist known as Peyo, and his little blue woodland creatures called The Smurfs were born. The Smurfs may be only three-apples-high, but their influence across the decades and around the globe is legendary, spawning toys, feature films, an animated TV series, and all the other makings of a media empire. But to Peyo’s truest admirers, it all goes back to the original comics that started it all. This summer, Papercutz, the children’s graphic novel publisher, celebrates the master cartoonist’s life in an event they’re calling “The Summer of Peyo” with two new ongoing series: THE SMURFS ANTHOLOGY, a deluxe repackaging of the classic comics in handsome hardcovers, and the debut of BENNY BREAKIRON, Peyo’s super-powered grade school champion, never before seen in the U.S. “We are very proud and excited that Papercutz will launch BENNY BREAKIRON in the United States and give comics fans the opportunity to discover the great adventures of this gentle and brave hero,” said Veronique Culliford, business director of Lafig Belgium and Culliford’s daughter. BENNY BREAKIRON #1: “The Red Taxis” (64pp | Hardcover ISBN: 9781597074094 / $11.99 | May 7, 2013) tells the story of a little boy with big heart, big ambition, and big problems when his superpowers go on the fritz at all the wrong times. THE SMURFS ANTHOLOGY VOL. 1 (192pp | Hardcover ISBN: 9781597074179 / $19.99 | June 25, 2013) kicks off a major reprint effort that will see every Smurfs comic in chronological order presented anew for older collectors with contextual notes and behind-the-scenes photos. As a special treat for fans, the series will include Peyo’s Johan and Peewit stories in which The Smurfs made their very first appearances, many of of which have not been published in the original Papercutz SMURFS graphic novel series. That series, a run of smaller-format volumes for kids, has sold more than 300,000 copies to date. The best-selling run continues during “The Summer of Peyo” with THE SMURFS #15: “The Smurflings” (56pp | Paperback ISBN: 9781597074070 / $5.99 | Hardcover ISBN: 9781597074087 / $10.99 | May 14, 2013) featuring the comics debut of the fan-favorite Sassette, and THE SMURFS #16: “The Aerosmurf” (56pp | Paperback ISBN: 9781597074261 / $5.99 | Hardcover ISBN: 9781597074278 / $10.99 | August 6, 2013). “Bringing Peyo’s SMURFS comics to an American audience two years ago was a dream come true for me, something I’ve been wanting to do for years,” said Papercutz Editor-In-Chief Jim Salicrup. “I can’t think of a better tribute to Peyo’s genius than this gorgeous hardcover series designed by Adam Grano and the introduction of yet another new series for Peyo fans, the bad-guy-busting BENNY BREAKIRON!” You don't have to wait until May to check out Benny Breakiron, as we have a preview for you right now below!
