BOOM! Launches Artist Submissions Facebook Page

8/22/2013

Press Release

Fans and aspiring artists always ask us what the best way is to get their work seen by an editor, and now BOOM! Studios has updated our process to make it easier than ever.

BOOM! Studios has launched an Artist Submissions page (https://www.facebook.com/BoomStudiosArtistSubmissions) on Facebook in order to create a venue for artists to submit their work and have it seen by the BOOM! Studios editorial team.

WHAT IT IS: The Artist Submissions Facebook Page is a place for artists (pencilers, inkers, colorists, letterers) to post samples of their work. (Please note that this page is strictly for artists and ALL unsolicited writing submissions will not be reviewed.)

HOW IT WORKS: Upload examples of your work for the BOOM! Studios Editorial staff to review. Post all art samples in the Timeline. DO NOT SEND MESSAGES. Make sure to provide your contact information. BOOM! does not respond directly to the posts or messages. BOOM! has hired a number of artists this way and will contact you if there is interest.

Additionally, the BOOM! Studios editorial staff will regularly post helpful hints and advice for artists to improve their craft on the Facebook page.

"I'm really excited about this new initiative," said Managing Editor Bryce Carlson. "Not only is the BOOM! Studios Artist Submissions Page an amazing opportunity for aspiring artists, colorists, and letterers to get their samples in front of BOOM! editors on a regular basis and find helpful tips and advice, it's also a great community for creators to interact and learn from each other. Finding new talent is awesome, but providing a home for people to grow and learn together is what really makes this so special."

Review--Fearless Defenders #8 (Marvel)

8/21/2013

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Fearless Defenders has easily become one of my favorite Marvel books going right now. Writer Cullen Bunn has a great take on Misty Knight, Valkyrie and their supporting cast, and the tone of the series reminds me of Pak and Van Lente’s Incredible Hercules from a few years back.

In the latest issue, Valkyrie and Dr. Annabelle Riggs are dealing with the fact that they now share the same body in a Bruce Banner / Hulk sort of way. Luckily for the two of them, they can exert some control over when the change takes place, although it’s fun watching them iron out the kinks. The story has them teaming up with Elsa Bloodstone for an adventure in New York Chinatown, and the issue is full of nods to Big Trouble in Little China, which I love.

Will Sliney’s artwork on this series continues to be great, and he’s back after a break last issue. I love his redesign on Valkyrie’s costume, and it fits with her new status quo. Sliney does justice to the constantly rotating cast of Marvel’s coolest female heroes, and his style has a whimsy that is a perfect match for the tone of Bunn’s writing.

Fearless Defenders has been a fun book from the start, and this issue is a great jumping on point.

Cyberforce And Selvestri Reward Fans

PRESS RELEASE

Cybernetic freedom fighters defend civilization from evil corporations and their takeover of the world in CYBERFORCE. Written and created by Marc Silvestri (THE DARKNESS, Uncanny X-Men), with art by Marco Turini, colors by Andy Troy (Astonishing X-Men), and finishes by digital wizard Stjepan Sejic (RAVINE, THE DARKNESS: THE DEATH OF JACKIE ESTACADO), CYBERFORCE #6 marks a landmark issue for the series and the beginning of a new story arc. CYBERFORCE launched with a record-setting promotion that gave readers the first five issues for free, making issue 6 the first issue in the series to cost anything, offered at the affordable price of $2.99.

Thanks to the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, TOP COW PRODUCTIONS, INC., and their loyal and amazing fans were able to raise enough money to resurrect the CYBERFORCE franchise. As a result, the first five issues of CYBERFORCE were sent to retailers all across the world to give away for free. Nothing like this had been done in comic book history, and as a result, fans have clamored for more. Issue 6, due in September, brings an end to the free promotion, but Silvestri trusts that the first five issues and the strength of this new story are enough incentive for readers to keep going.

In CYBERFORCE, corporations control everything, and a young woman named Velocity must escape her mother and sister’s grasp in order to search for a very important man named Stryker. With the big companies on top, normal people are forced to live in what’s left of the cities. These people are protected by CYBERFORCE, a group of former soldiers who have banded together to fight for the weak, hunted, and oppressed. After the conclusion of their first story arc, issue 6 introduces readers to a new purpose and mission for the CYBERFORCE crew. Revenge has been achieved, so survival is now top priority as a more dangerous and uncontrollable threat has been activated.

"The lines between good and evil, and fact and fiction continue to blur as CYBERFORCE falls farther down the technological rabbit hole,” Silvestri explains. “Artist Marco Turini brings our worst nightmares to life as we learn that Cyber Data may in fact be the least of our problems."

PRAISE FOR CYBERFORCE

"Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins have a built an interesting world here."
-IGN

"The writing and artwork are solid and the world presented promises intrigue as well as sweet robot/cyborg fights."
-Destroy The Cyborg

“Cyberforce is a series I normally wouldn’t have read, but found the writing to be excellent, gradually getting better with each issue. It’s now been added to my pull list.”
-Nerd Nation Radio

Comic Book Resources has given the series praise and recently posted the entire fifth issue of CYBERFORCE on their site for fans to enjoy.

CYBERFORCE issues 1-5 can be read at the Top Cow website, or picked up for free at any local comic shop.

CYBERFORCE #6 will be released in comic shops on September 18 (Diamond Code MAY130409) and will be available digitally on the Image Comics website as well as ComiXology.

'X-O Manowar: Centurion' Is Now Available!

You may remember me getting really excited about the new Kindle Worlds platform a while back, especially once Valiant Comics joined the program. My Camp NaNoWriMo project for July was to write a story for Valiant's X-O Manowar property, and I am very happy to say that the story is now available on the Amazon!

The story is called Centurion, and you can grab it for $1.99 right here.

Here's the description:

After being captured and enslaved by the alien race known as the Vine, Aric of Dacia stole their most powerful weapon and used it against them. Donning the X-O Manowar armor, Aric took the fight to the Vine on their homeworld of Loam and defeated them, freeing what was left of his people in the process.

Now, as Aric tries to forge a new life for his people, he learns that the Vine have a weapon of their own--someone from Aric's past who now conspires with the Vine to get the Manowar armor back and destroy what is left of the Visigoth people. As Aric comes face to face with his past, the future of his people is in jeopardy.

Centurion is a standalone story that takes place between issues #14 and #15 of the current X-O Manowar comic series.

I hope you dig it! If you do, please leave a review on Amazon, as it really helps.

When In Albany Visit 'Earthworld'

On a recent trip to Albany (so recent, it was last Friday) I made a little detour to a real cool comic shop...'Earthworld'.

'Earthworld' is located on 537 Central Avenue in Albany, New York and is an amazing store. From the second you walk in you know you are in a real 'comic shop' run by folks who really love comics and all thing geek!

When you first walk in and look to your left there are boxes and boxes... and boxes of fifty cent books. I didn't have the time to dig thru them, but next time I'm so in!

As far as new comics go they have everything you may want and need! Even getting comp books, DCBS, and books from my local comic shop (that I do work at), i still was able to find a few things I needed.

Trades, toys, cards and supplies all over the store give you one stop shopping. But the biggest thing I noticed is that 'Earthworld' is spacious and incredibly clean!

So when you are in Albany, New York... or just passing through, you need to stop off at 'Earthworld'!

And... friend them on Facebook at

Our buddy Eugene Lehnert (Armageddon for Andy) created this hysterical web series a while back, which chronicles the strange things that keep happening to a couple of roommates in Queens. Our pal Chris Giarrusso plays Pete, and in this episode, he is brilliant. Give it a watch, and then check out the rest of The Outer Boroughs on Eugene's Vimeo page.

NOTE: There is a tiny bit of adult language in this episode.

Jonathan Luna Returns To Comics

8/16/2013

Press Release

After three years away from comics, Jonathan Luna (GIRLS, THE SWORD, ULTRA, Spider-Woman: Origin) is back, drawing and co-writing ALEX + ADA with Sarah Vaughn (Sparkshooter). In this near-future tale, Alex is attempting to recover from a setback in his life and return to normal. Ada, a Tanaka X5 and the latest and greatest model of companion android, comes into his life. She lives to serve, as long as her programming allows it, but does he want to be served?

The world of ALEX + ADA gives us a glimpse of what our own future may be like. It features a thriving robotics industry, alarm clocks that are floating holographic displays, breakfast served by floating robots, and normal human beings who are able to control their home electronics with a thought. Vaughn says that readers can expect "drama, humor, love, loss, and more robots than you can shake a stick at" in the series.

Luna took a break from comics after the finale of THE SWORD, producing an illustrated prose book named STAR BRIGHT AND THE LOOKING GLASS in the interim, but he’s excited to be back at the drawing board. "It’s so great. I feel like I’ve lost some time, but at the same time I’ve learned so much in the past few years from photography, painting, Star Bright, and life experiences. I’m reinvigorated and I feel so fortunate to be working in comics."

When asked to describe their working relationship, Vaughn said, "It looks a lot like Misery. I ended up having to hobble Jon. All kidding aside, we’ve been able to reach a good balance between our friendship and creative partnership." Luna, too, praises his co-writer: "Sarah is a good friend first and I never would’ve guessed that we’d be working together in this capacity. I’m very glad that we’re able to. It’s all been a very pleasant surprise."

Both creators debuted ALEX + ADA in an interview on Comic Book Resources, discussing both Luna’s break from and return to comics, the research required for ALEX + ADA, and their working process. Follow both creators on Twitter: @jonathanlunacom and @sarahvictoriav.

ALEX + ADA #1 will be in stores on November 6 and can be pre-ordered from the September issue of Previews (SEP130479).

Press Release

ReedPOP -- organizer of pop culture conventions including New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration, the UFC Fan Expo, C2E2, and PAX -- has unveiled the creation of the ReedPOP Supply Co. (www.reedpopsupplyco.com), an online store selling ReedPOP convention exclusives and original licensed merchandise year-round. The ReedPOP Supply Co. launched July 26, simultaneously with this year's Star Wars Celebration Europe in Essen, Germany, and it currently stocks a selection of original, official Star Wars Celebration goods available nowhere else. New York Comic Con, C2E2, and other ReedPOP products will be added over the coming weeks.

The ReedPOP Supply Co. presently houses over 20 Star Wars Celebration Limited Edition items, all unique, online variants of exclusives offered at this year's Star Wars Celebration as well as at previous years' Star Wars conventions. Exclusives include such fan favorite products as the Hoth Blue Milk Brewing Co. Glass (from Celebration V), the ABC's of Star Wars Woven Blanket (from Celebration VI), and the world exclusive Star Wars Rebels Logo T-Shirt -- the logo was revealed at this year's Star Wars Celebration Europe.

All of the ReedPOP Supply Co.'s Star Wars Celebration Limited Edition items are available to ship the world over -- but they are available for a limited time only -- through midnight August 22nd and disappearing on August 23rd.

"We're very excited to launch the ReedPOP Supply Co.," said Lance Fensterman, ReedPOP Global Vice President. "Not only does this give fans that can't make it to our events a chance to share in the exclusives, but it's also a big move for our brand. ReedPOP started out as a boutique group organizing pop culture conventions in the US, but this year has seen us expand the brand in a number of bold directions -- international launches including PAX Australia and Star Wars Celebration Europe, live streams from our physical events to fans viewing along at home, and now the launch of a year-round merchandise store. ReedPOP and its shows are on the move into some very new, very untraditional areas, all of which speak to who and what we see ReedPOP on the cusp of becoming.”

To learn more, browse products, or place an order on the ReedPOP Supply Co., please visit www.reedpopsupplyco.com. More Star Wars Celebration-inspired products will be added shortly as well as new items representing ReedPOP events including New York Comic Con and C2E2.
